So Carplay...

Beyond bringing an undoubtedly limited choice of music and navigation apps to the vehicle, what's the big deal? Anything social networking related will likely get barred as soon as the first person dies because of Facebook or Twitter

It's a huge money spinner for wreckers/repairers. ;)

It's a nice way to combine navigation and call/messaging between the car entertainment unit and phone. Instead if people having to buy a number of units , car play gives you all the functionality in one.

My relative owns a 2015 Honda Civic and was hoping his car was backward compatible with CarPlay. He called Honda customer care earlier this year and they told him yes it would be. Now, we know they lied. Only the 2016+ Civic/Accord models get it. Given how aggressive Hyundai has been in the market the past few years, it's possible they told you the truth, but when you look at all of the other auto companies, basically if your car/suv didn't have CarPlay when you drove off the dealer's lot, you're not getting CarPlay unless you install some third-party setup yourself.

It's not about Hyundai telling the truth. Hyundai advertised, in writing, Carplay would be available in the 2015 Sonata's equipped with navigation systems. Not coming through with this promise is false advertising and they could face legal ramifications.

I believe they will be releasing CarPlay to the 2015 models, as there is nothing to suggest they're going back on their word.

I think this needs to become a class action lawsuit. The false pretenses provided which directly led to the purchase of this vehicle are unacceptable. hyundai has demonstrated an absolute lack of regard for communication on the matter. Hyundai promised free and in 2015, they screwed up, they need to own up to their failure and take responsibility. I bought a car and have been waiting for a year now for CarPlay, one of the top features for deciding to get the 15' sonata sport 2.0 limited with upgrades. I reasonably understood that maybe it would be released in Q2 of 2015 so with that CarPlay is at least 6 months behind schedule. I will not pay for hyundai's failure, and I certainly will not stand behind a company that does not honor their word.

You clam I'm wrong, and then you note I'm correct because they can submit apps… which is how the App Store works. The developer certainly has to jump through Apple's hoops to be approved. This is how it's been since it began.

No you're wrong because you stated: "That's up to Waze." It's not up to Waze. That's what your wrong about.

Oh, I get his context, but his base assumption is a fallacy. For starters, he uses the term "affordable" which means absolutely nothing in an scientific sense as it's not definitive. This is why you may see Hyunai advertise their Genesis as the most affordable car in its class. See how that's qualified, but take a look at the Genesis prices. There are plenty of other automobile companies that sell less expensive cars. If Henry is trying to argue that Hyundai gives you a lot of car, with good quality for a given price, compared to others in its class, he's doing a piss-poor job of it. I've already stated on the first page that I think you get a lot for what you pay; I know this first hand, which is why I bought a Hyundai in 2013 and will consider buying one again, despite many here being against anything from S. Korea.
Now it makes sense. You took offense because he used the word cheap in relation to something you own. Nevermind the fact he was saying it's a good thing CP/AA aren't exclusive to luxury brands or only top trim levels. If, as you say, you understood his context then there should have been nothing to complain about. Enjoy your car. No one was denigrating it or Hyundai. :)

Off topic: Hyundai/Kia build decent cars... now. Their reputation for cheap, crappy cars was well deserved. They sold absolute ass, very cheaply, for years. To their credit, they greatly improved the quality and reliability of their cars. Their reputation isn't as easy to fix as the quality. Perception is changing, but the reputation they earned won't die overnight and the Equus and K900 (god awful name btw) won't make it change any faster. Only time and continued quality will assuage. To be crystal clear, this is not what Henry was talking about. He was talking about access to CP.

Hyundai and Korean cars were called "disposable trash" cars in 1980s and well deserved that reputation.

I'm not even sure they need to buy separate units on new vehicles. I've driven a few different brands of vehicle and their offerings have improved massively with regards to navigation/text/calls.

It's worrying (Although not surprising) to see so many people that treat Carplay as a deal-breaker. If people are willing to place Carplay above safety, fuel economy, driving dynamics and overall quality then they're a moron and deserve to be sold a lemon. With CarPlay.

I really fail to see what the big deal is with Carplay.

I used to play music in my car(s) with an iPod in a cradle linked via a Dension interface. Using the iPod interface was way better than navigating with the head unit. It was technically handsfree as it was in a cradle, and the iPod with a click wheel was easy to use, but a bit distracting I will accept.

Then the iPhone came along and I started using the iPhone in a cradle connected to aux in. Actually a bit harder to use as a touch screen is more distracting than physical buttons (Volvo new XC90 are you listening?)

But now that IOS 9 has hands free Siri even when not connected to power, you simply need to snap your iPhone 6s into a cradle, link automatically via bluetooth (either built in or one of the £10 adaptors that you can buy) and your good to go with a fully handsfree system. The iPhone 6 screen is easily big enough and better resolution than any built in head unit.

So I fail to see what additional benefit Carplay brings?

I agree, I believe they will still be releasing it for the 2015 vehicles. Does anybody know when the 1st quarter for 2016 begins and ends?
