Allot of people say there waiting for the newer Mac Pro's but I'll tell you what the refurbished Mac Pro's 2.8 are going off the refurbished listing FAST.

Although that 4,000.00 dollar machine is still sitting there

Agreed. Here in the Canadian Apple store, the 2.8, 2x2.8 mac pros go VERY FAST as well. Apple is really clearing their stock.

So, I wonder... maybe I should just get an older Mac Pro from Ebay for less (not much really) money... and maybe I can even upgrade the CPU later......... OR... get the 1 quad core 2.8ghz CPU Apple offers to save some money now, and get that great memory capacity......? What do you all think?
Doug

I got the lower spec'd 8-core thinking to upgrade later if needed and hoping it would be cheaper. Don't do it! If you have the money, go for a higher CPU. Retail Xeons and heatsinks are damn expensive! I'm not regretting my purchase one bit but just warning you if you're planning to upgrade the CPU.

I tell you. I once worked with Photoshop CS3 on 15-25MB Tiff/RAW files with several layers etc. and encoding video with handbreak, listening to music, iChat window opened and browser opened on a 2nd screen. There was no hit on my performance and I don't know how much faster it can go and I only have the 2 x 2.8 Quad. For me, it's plenty plenty fast for my heavy PS CS3 use and I don't think I need the extra speed for what I do for the next long long while. Maybe considering the next next MP or maybe even next next next MP. I just don't see what future applications or applications to justify all this horsepower. I honestly don't.

But RAM is dirt cheap these days so I took advantage of it and upgraded my 4 x 1GB sticks to 4 x 2GB for total 16GB (8 x 2GB). Should arrive tomorrow. :D

A WWDC release is far more likely.

All things aside, WWDC "would" be likely. But as I mentioned in my other thread June is highly unlikely. But if a June release materialises that's just good news but don't get your hopes up too much. There's no escaping the current state of the global economy and financial crisis / credit squeeze.

Something rarely mentioned related to the next Mac Pro update is how Apple dropped the 23" monitor for the Mac Pro once the new 24" display for the laptops surfaced...
Now my plan was to buy a Mac Pro with dual 23" cinema displays but I'm now in limbo with the new Mac Pro's not currently having the display mini-port and the 23" displays not available.
Surely Apple wouldn't just leave a gap in it's monitor market like this unless it had an update planned very soon? Otherwise, why not just keep selling the 23" display for the Mac Pros for another few months???

Because the next Mac Pro will have graphics cards with dual Mini DisplayPort out.

But what I don't get is why Apple have decided to stop selling the 23" displays but continued selling the 20" and 30". Anyone who was planning on buying a Mac Pro with 23" display/s (like me!) is now effectively being forced to wait or to buy an alternative brand of monitor.

So? The Cinema Displays are horribly dated and ludicrously expensive. There are much better displays for cheaper now.

The new LED line is VERY competitively priced, however.

Hey, I've got good news! You're wrong! They don't sell a 20". They have a 24" and 30"

EDIT: hey i'm wrong! they do still sell the 20".... get the 24" LED

That'd be okay, but IT WON'T WORK WITH HIS COMPUTER.

Anyone afraid of digging out the ol' soldering iron shouldn't be using a computer.
What's wrong with buying a new MB, de-soldering the graphics card and connectors, soldering it to a PCI-E PCB, plugging it into the MP and installing some drivers?

Too far? ;)

I say to just wait for the Gainestown Mac Pro with GPUs with dual Mini DisplayPort in them already.

THEN get a 24" LED.

Anyways...!

My point wasn't so much the monitor itelf, I'm probably gonna wait for the new Mac Pros and get dual 24" (So long as they give us the non-glossy option...)

But from Apple's view, I thought it was a strange one to drop the 23" if the Mac Pro is still a good few months away.

Why not keep selling the <crappy old> 23" for the Mac Pro, alongside the glossy 24" for the laptops. Then release the full new Cinema Display range to coincide with the new Mac Pro & it's Mini DisplayPorts.

There's always that of course.
Why is everyone thinking mini displayport over regular displayport though?

It's not like the current MP has mini-DVI.
Apple love being able to sell adapters! :)

Oh , what does the LED line (what line ?) have over even the 20" ACD ?
2 of my displays are 20" ACDs, no bleeding and they can easily be calibrated, more than one could say about that 24" thing.

They even work with all my Macs, imagine ! ;)

Apple's cards don't have that. Apple has the sway to get ATI and nVidia to remove ports; they can have the sway to get them to change ports.

It'd be more like adding ports, as we certainly don't want to see a MP with mini-ports only, do we ?
Removing a port, that's sort of simple, take the cost of a different bracket and loose a port, win-win .

It's a newer H-IPS panel with a better backlight (obviously) and better specs all around.

What we want to see doesn't matter. I believe that Apple couldn't care less and will replace both DVI with Mini DisplayPort.

To explain it in more easy terms, for people who haven't owned or used
ACDs , maybe not even own a desktop computer:

24" LED : not good in a professional environment, nor elsewhere.
Lowest spec'd 20" ACD : most reliable, solid display product Apple is offering.

They can't replace DVI ports with MiniDP on a Mac Pro yet, because compatibility is key in a workstation.

Apple has not ever done what it wants, it's always been about profit and catering to a closely watched market.

They just have marketing that makes people believe the need a certain product.
Like the iPod and iPhone, well done indeed, but you can't sell useless gadets to power users.

Unless they are 19yros and from Indiana, and don't grasp the concept of a workstation . ;)

Which is why–in my other thread–I said that they would go to dual Mini DisplayPort (for compatibility with THEIR displays) and include two Mini DisplayPort-DVI (single link) adapters in the box. They already have a full DVI-full DVI adapter in the box for compatibility with monitors with large DVI plugs that don't fit side by side on the GPU, so why wouldn't they include two of their cheapo adapters that support up to 24" monitors for free and still force people to buy two Mini DisplayPort-DVI (dual link) adapters for their 30" displays?

They'd do that and you know it. They cut corners by not including any Mini DisplayPort adapters with the new MacBook line, and before that when they killed off the Apple Remote after having advertised Front Row as a selling point.
