I have both a htc flyer and a ipad 2. They both serve their purposes and I think that there is a market for 7 inch tablets despite what Apple wants you to believe. The cool thing I can do with the flyer is write down my grocery list which is time-stamped to my nagging wife's voice. When I am at the store, I just press on whatever I wrote and it lets me hear what she said at that moment. I also like how I can just throw the tablet in my pocket and just run out the house. I once managed to get my ipad in my pocket but I did get lots of strange looks at bible study.

Ok, suppose they keep tabs on this community. Do you think your post, or this thread, is indicative of a demand Apple might want to satisfy? It's not. Do you think Apple hasn't already thought of any of your demands? They have.

I know I can ignore whatever threads I want, I was just wondering if there was something more to the OP than a random wish list.

I want an iPad that can wipe my ass for me after a trip to the toilet. If I post it here Apple will listen and make one. Guaranteed.

True dat. Anyone who thinks that Apple "keeps tabs" on this forum for anything other than improper disclosures of trade secrets is nutty.

Now that is Fire is out, I see a LOT of people starting to lament about lack of 7" iPad.

How quickly attitudes change.
There still seems to be an unusual amount of people who, for some inexplicable reason, feel threatened by even the suggestion of a smaller iPad and will angrily attack the very idea.

Did you say a smaller iPad? How can you even grasp the idea of Apple creating a smaller iPad? You know that is never going to happen.. Right?

Because, of course, you only consider two options, either we agree that a 7" iPad is ideal or we feel "threatened"? Don't be silly. Nobody's "angrily attacking" the idea, just pointing out that it's not a particular good one.

7"diagonal + HDMI IN

1) the killer upgrade is HDMI 'IN' & Wireless interoperability with input peripherals as well as file transfer. The time is now for releasing a small 7" diagonal ipad that can do double duty as a remote monitor. Imagine the applicability in surveillance, field video and education. I proposed this back when iPad2 was announced. Please let's get the R&D out into beta on this.
2) 7" diagonal form-factor for true 'suit jacket' pocket-ability
Thanks Apple. Thanks Steve (in absentia - RIP)

By what measure are you using?

Me and a number of posters are ready to purchase a iPad mini.
Even if it amounts to 5% of all iPad owners, that amounts to about 1,000,000 iPad mini's made (based on 20 million + iPad's sold), more then nearly each 7" Android tablets (except Fire).

Apple would not just make a smaller iPad, but do some minor system tweaks to compensate for the slightly smaller screen. Even then, a 2" screen reduction will not detract much from the experiance, IMHO.

While a million units of anything seems like a lot, it's not in Apple's business model to develop a product with a lower margin than its existing line with the expectation that it will sell a paltry million units.

By way of example, the Apple TV was Apple's "hobby" product, filling an untested niche and selling well, but not profitably.

I don't doubt that we'll see a smaller Apple tablet someday, but it's just not going to happen anytime soon.

They already have a smaller iPad, it's the iPod touch.

7 inch is still too large to stick in your pocket, and too small to surf/work/play. If you really want a tablet that size then go buy one, it's not like they don't exist, but personally I'll just stick to my iPod touch in my pocket and my iPad in my handbag.

7inch is not too small to surf/work/play.

you are agreeing with us by contradicting yourself.
Apple has GOBS of cash. Profitability is NOT an Apple 'problem'. If you took all the money Apple wasted developing Mac mini's and Apple TV combined over the past 5 years, they could have financed a 7"Diagonal ipad and actually made money on that instead !
No. it's a matter of devil catch the hindmost. Apple like to drag feet sometimes to get a lay of the land. Once a competitor establishes benchmarks for customer base, THEN Apple moves in with an Apple branded product. It's the opposite strategy to the first out the gate, first to grab the lion's share.
we wait.... we see :D

Personally I'd like a 32" to 40" iPad. Needs to weigh under 10lbs though, and should come with (nicely integrated) wheels and an extendable handle for porting it around. Dual-purpose, they serve as a stand to prop it up. You can lay it on your coffee table, or let it serve as a coffee table. :D

They can call it an iTV, but by all means don't have it require any sort of cable to work. No power cable or TV cable should be necessary. All content can be found on the web these days anyway. A 32"/40" body should have room for a week-long battery. There should be a generator hooked up to the wheels, to charge it as you drag it around. That, and any static discharge from touching it will charge it a little. Throw in microwave charging, so it charges from all the radio waves bombarding us.

Contradicting myself? Hardly. Apple has lots of cash because they make a solid effort to use it wisely. Apple TV is not a waste because it got them thinking in another direction and it didn't compete with any other Apple products. Giving someone a less useful iPad at a lower price/profit doesn't help Apple in the least.

I may be in the minority here, but a 7" iPad would be ideal for me. If you all remember before the iPad 1 launch there were many credible sources saying Apple was developing two sizes, a 7" and 10". For whatever reason they chose not to introduce the 7". IMHO I think they may have been afraid it would cut into the iPod Touch marketshare. I hope the success of the Kindle Fire will jumstart the developers at Apple to take a second look at a 7" for factor.

I have an iPad 2, iphone 4s. I had been wanting something in between for easier book reading and watching TV in bed through slingbox. The ipad is too big and the iphone too small.

I bought a 7" Nook Color and rooted it. It seems to fit the bill for the size I was looking for. However, the UI sucks and battery life is not that great.

I would gladly pony up for a smaller ipad or even a larger ipod/iphone (maybe 5"). Take a look at the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 - it's really a nice size for my uses, but it's Android again and the screen resolution is not so hot.

Love to have a 5-7" iOS device

It is really hilarious how venomous some people are on the prospect of a smaller iPad.
What are those people worried about if Apple does makes a smaller iPad?

It is weird! Analyzing this is above my pay grade, but my first thought is that some actually are trying to channel Jobs, what they think he thought.

In any case, something new in the iTouch/small iPad line will happen sooner or later.

Preparing for the Big "yay" or the letdown

Drum roll please.
If Apple just announce their screen makeovers as the next iPad upgrade, I'm gonna let them hear my full load of disappointment.
However, if they do release a 7" ipad i will buy more stocks that day, if it sports an HDMI IN port , I'll buy twice the number of stocks !
I've never sold Apple stocks :D

Wow some of you are pretty close minded, not everyone wants an ipad as large as the current one just like some of you wouldn't want a 7 inch model.

Id prefer the large 10 inch to a 7 too, but I can see why some would want one.

Plus it would bring those who cant afford or cant justify paying 500 for an ipad but want an iOS device tablet.

They don't make all TVs the same size or monitors either, both which come down to preference why is the ipad treated as a one size fits all to some of you? Or is it because the price point would drop to something many can afford making the device less special? I don't get it.

Not gonna happen

Don't get your hopes up, it's NOT going to happen. The only way it MIGHT happen is if they stop the current iPod Touch and make it into a 7 or 5 inch tablet but I wouldn't bet on that either. Just stick with an iPad or go to another brand because apple won't have it anytime soon

I think Apple will probably wait until 2013 for a smaller version. The Kindle Fire is selling very well right now. I believe it sold over 4 million alone in December. It will track its progress this year and see if they are interested.

7" tablet > 9.7" tablet for me.

I found the iPad 2 too big at times, especially if you want to carry it around all the time.

I think an 8.5" tablet would be a sweet spot.

This endless blather about a 7" is beyond tiresome, but in the interest of fact-checking, Amazon sold 4 million "Kindles" in December. This includes all models from $79 up. I'm sure the Fire had good sales, but not 4 million. And it's also ridiculous to conclude that the Fire is selling well because it's a 7" device. It's selling well because it's $200.

Thank you for the correction; however, the Kindle Fire alone has sold at least 2 million, which is still relatively good. (http://www.pcworld.com/article/247097/kindle_fire_helps_amazon_set_holiday_sales_record.html)
