So that means I "F"ed then I guess. This phone can be too much trouble than its worth sometimes.
Consider it a lesson learned.
***** happens, so do the best you can to prepare for it.
Always make a manual backup before running any updates.
Heck... make a backup whenever you make any significant changes to the contents of your phone.
I know iTunes is supposed to automatically make a backup when applying an update, but it too can fail.

Good luck.

I'm thinking this. I did an ota update but was paranoid the phone would die so I plugged it in prior.

Did anyone try to update with it being plugged into a power source? Kind of curious if it just ask you to to be on the safe side.

I downloaded OTA, and it worked fine. Had to connect to a power source for the install because I was below 50% battery. Everything worked smoothly.

If I understand your question, I was connected to a power source (PC without iTunes running) and was not prompted to use a power source when I started the OTA update.

Yeah, my iCloud backup was current but I did a manual iTunes backup "just in case". Not necessary but it covers all the bases.

DON'T EVER RESTORE WITHOUT BACKING UP IMMEDIATELY BEFORE

I agree that itunes can be confusing if your not used to it, (my wife used to have fits).
Once you plug in and see your device in the left column, simply just rt click on it and select backup.
That way you will be sure that you have all of your latest sms, contacts, voicemails, etc.

(and everyone should always export their contacts to their pc or macs, it's easy to do, and then you will have them saved in 2 different places) :)

Yes, I've tried 2 different backups and still nothing. I'm trying a backup from icloud right now from about 3 weeks ago.

Why a backup from 3 weeks ago?!

What I did when I updated my iPhone and iPad:

-Ran an iCloud backup on both devices to make sure I got all of my updated messages and everything. Made sure it completed properly.
-Installed 5.1 through iTunes (I was running the beta previously)
-restored from iCloud backups
-All ok.

If you are to be livid with anyone, be livid with yourself.

One thing that bugs me is that when I turn off 3G and then reboot or turn on/off my phone, it automatically turns the 3G on. This is annoying.

Only thing I have to point out about 5.1 really, as for the rest, loving it!

I started the update OTA plugged into my wall charger the whole time. I got the "Plug into iTunes" picture so I did that with iTunes already open. Nothing changed on my phone or the computer for about 5 mins so I hit restore since it was the only thing I could do. It then re downloaded the update and restored.

I tried to find my update from yesterday to restore from and it wasn't there. The last one was from Feb 17th. I restore from that and it's like a new phone. Nothing from that date.

Are you SURE the "connect to itunes" message you saw, wasn't the "connect to POWER" to conserve battery? I know you said it was plugged in the whole time, but I am just try to figure out what happened. Are you saying you got the.....
