All IMO:

There's not a single Android phone that has looks anywhere near the iPhone 4.

Android OS is ugly.

I've never tried the music player, but I can't imagine it would sync so perfectly with my iTunes and iPhoto, and be as seamless as the iPod.app.

I have never had the need to search a webpage on my phone. Ever.

I jailbroke my iPhone 3G, and could fully customize everything, and it was cool for a while, but then it's just stupid. At some point, I just wanted it completely back to stock. It was just so buggy with all the stuff I had installed on it.

I don't consider myself dumb, and I (will) love my iPhone 4, and I know all its shortcomings.

Okay, dummy. No insult intended.

Very constructive and mature.

…I don't even know why I post such long messages. No one reads them anyway… lol.

Your message was very insightful and I for one enjoyed it.

Good way to avoid a flame war, Smokey.

Iam with the zombie kid on this one.

So get a Droid, smarty pants.

OP: I see what you are saying and yes the iPhone is limited, however, it also has some awesome features. I love the new camera and flash, the screen, the speed of it is amazing, iMovie built in now (well $4.99 but on the iPhone) is awesome as well. Top of all of this with features that have been there like syncing easily with MobileMe, iTunes and my MacBook it's just golden. Plus it's damn sexy!

keyofnight, I read it, and I agree with you on certain points. Build quality, for instance. Nothing HTC does comes close to the sturdiness of an iPhone.

But when it comes to simplicity, I should say I disagree. Less isn’t always more, at least not in this case. I want the iPhone to be my phone, and Apple isn’t really allowing it to be so. I think not wanting too many menus and limited customizability are somewhat related. I happen to love the fact that in Android, I could control every single thing with one tap, and didn’t have to rely on a company dictating the one ringtone I can use for all my inboxes.

The UI is smooth and intuitive, for sure, but recent Android devices (Incredible, for instance), are up there. Why can’t I control how I use my phone, check my emails and browse the net?

I’ve already said what my biggest gripes are, and I could add Google Navigation and Google Maps to the list, but that’s nitpicking and ultimately subjective.

So, yeah, just my thoughts.

I am not meaning to start a flame war, I am merely expressing my observations about the new iPhone thus far. And please, refrain from giving "...And what are you doing here, exactly?" responses.

I used an Android phone before and I am finding myself increasingly baffled by all the seemingly fundamental features the iPhone lacks. Let me say, though, I think it's a beautiful piece of engineering, very intuitive and simple. But herein lies the problem.

By that I mean, for instance, no saving attachments, no searching within web pages, no multiple separate inbox icons, no multiple email notification settings, no status bar notifications...

Of course, "there's an app for that" - but that's beside the point. I shouldn't have to pay between $0.99 and $4.99 or more to be able to search a web page - besides, I don't want a bunch of icons on my phone that all amount to incremental improvements to performance that should really be built in.

Does it just come down to the fact that the iPhone is, really, a phone for dumb people or light users?

I don't necessarily mean dumb, but after using Android, the lack of customization and features on the iPhone is a bit of a shock. (For the record, Android comes with all of those above features built in).

What does the average iPhone user want from a phone? Is it just basic Internet browsing (without Flash) and a bit of music listening?

I don't mean to offend but to spark discussion. I love how shiny my iPhone is, but I just wish it was smarter.

I am lazy so I chose IPHONE. This is the trend. UI friendly is king. Not everybody wants to become a computer expert to use their phone............someday, I probably will choose Android when it is more mature. but it is not now.

Thank you. And also, of course, the iPhone app market always wins. And yes, the camera is far superior to most other phones - i love that.

Think of this analogy:

iPhone is the World of Warcraft of smartphones. Simple, yet addictive and it works.

other smartphones................

no saving attachments,

save them where? they're already in your emails. it's not like emails disappear and if you want to keep an attachment you have to move it to a different folder...

no searching within web pages,

I thought you were super smart?

javascript:void(l=%27%27);d=document.body;j=0;lrid=null;if(d.lastfind!=null&&d.lastfindrid!=null){l=d.lastfind;lrid=d.lastfindrid;}void(s=prompt(%27Find%20text:%27,l));if(s!=null&&s!=%27%27){if(s==l){j=d.lastfindindex+1;}else{b=d.innerHTML;if(lrid!=null){x=new%20RegExp(%27([^<])%27,%20%27g%27);b=b.replace(x,%20%27$1%27);}d.lastfind=s;s=%27(%27+s+%27)%27;x=new%20RegExp(s,%27gi%27);rn=Math.floor(Math.random()100);rid=%27z%27+rn;d.lastfindrid=rid;b=b.replace(x,%27$1%27);void(d.innerHTML=b);alert(%27Found%20%27+document.getElementsByName(rid).length+%27%20matches.%27);}d.lastfindindex=j;window.scrollTo(0,document.getElementsByName(rid)[j%document.getElementsByName(rid).length].offsetTop);}

Bookmark that. When you want to "find in page" just hit that bookmark.

no multiple separate inbox icons,

For maximum confusion? There's an inbox per account, as it should be.

no multiple email notification settings,

On or off, buddy. ;)

no status bar notifications...

And that would be the only thing LOLdroid has that I wish iOS had.

currently, it's not even a phone....it can't handle the reception.

What are you talking about? It can handle reception if you're in an area with decent reception. Mine works perfectly, I cant even replicate the signal loss with the death grip. But seriously, who holds their phone in a death grip when theyre talking to someone on it? I use my fingertips.

Apple is a company that executes strict control and keeps closed design environments. They believe it is important in maintaining quality and integration, and it has been their design philosophy since rebirth.

They usually will not incorporate a feature until they feel the have perfected it.

Some people like this, so people don't. If you prefer features and customization, you're barking up the wrong tree.

i'm sick of hearing people say this.

i'm right handed. when i'm TALKING on the phone, i hold it by my fingertips. No signal loss.

when i'm USING the phone the other percentage of the time (reading email, playing games, surfing the web, texting, etc), i hold it in my LEFT HAND and use my right and to tap. while it's in my LEFT hand, i'm not gripping it like a death grip, i'm merely holding it like a normal person would.

get off it man, this "who holds their phone in a death grip when they're talking" crap is wrong. the iphone is used for more than talking and that's where it loses signal too.

There is a totally free way to do it without an app.

Maybe if you'd come around asking questions we could have helped you solve all your problems. But it seems you're too smart to do that, apparently.

Huh? I want to be able to save attachments I recieve and work with them. I don't want to log into an email account and search for it every time I need to consult it. Plus, I can't search within pdf attachments, so = fail.

I thought you were super smart?

javascript:void(l=%27%27);d=document.body;j=0;lrid=null;if(d.lastfind!=null&&d.lastfindrid!=null){l=d.lastfind;lrid=d.lastfindrid;}void(s=prompt(%27Find%20text:%27,l));if(s!=null&&s!=%27%27){if(s==l){j=d.lastfindindex+1;}else{b=d.innerHTML;if(lrid!=null){x=new%20RegExp(%27([^<])%27,%20%27g%27);b=b.replace(x,%20%27$1%27);}d.lastfind=s;s=%27(%27+s+%27)%27;x=new%20RegExp(s,%27gi%27);rn=Math.floor(Math.random()100);rid=%27z%27+rn;d.lastfindrid=rid;b=b.replace(x,%27$1%27);void(d.innerHTML=b);alert(%27Found%20%27+document.getElementsByName(rid).length+%27%20matches.%27);}d.lastfindindex=j;window.scrollTo(0,document.getElementsByName(rid)[j%document.getElementsByName(rid).length].offsetTop);}

Oh, but I have that already. Where are the search arrows though? Oh, the pro version has them.

For maximum confusion? There's an inbox per account, as it should be.

For ease of email access. I don't want to have to click three buttons to see which email account recieved mail. Separate icons = separate notification = carefree life.

Your whole point was that it's not able to be used as a phone. That is talking on the phone.

I don't personally think Android OS is ugly - HTC Sence is quite beautiful really, for instance. And much more customizable. Is it just because it doesn't run with Helvetica like the iPhone does?

HTC Sense is not Android though. It's an add on on top of it. How much of what you like in Android is actually an add on on top of Android?

I know that. But does it matter? What I was trying to get at is "out of the box" functionality.

OK OP, here's my opinion:

I do miss the status bar notifications and lockscreen info that I had on my JB 3GS... I also liked downloading from the web and the extra customization, but I'm pleased as punch with my iPhone 4 because for giving up that stuff I got the new display, improved camera, improved design... (Not having a plastic back that cracks around the port is awesome as I use the iPod a TON in my car.)

I am a local musician and use the phone to a pretty full extent. I have tried and owned other touch screen devices (before Android) on Verizon's network and no matter what conclusion I came to about the phone (whatever it was), I knew that I would always still have two devices: my iPod and whatever phone I owned. Two devices to keep track of, to charge, to carry around when I'm on the go. I tried to switch my music over to a SD card and use the phone (at the time it was the Dare which I know pales in comparison to the Droid phones) as a music player and it never worked out the way I wanted.

For me, until a phone comes out that works as seamlessly with my music as the ipod, I'm sorta stuck. That's the big difference. I'm a music-minded person so I may be unique in this regard.

Thank you but I have the 'find in page' bookmarklet. It was one of the first thing I installed when I got my phone. But the free version is limited. It only seems to search and stop. What gives? No use to me like that.

Huh? I want to be able to save attachments I recieve and work with them. I don't want to log into an email account and search for it every time I need to consult it. Plus, I can't search within pdf attachments, so = fail.

Several free apps that allow you to save PDF's to your phone, and allow you to view them, search, and book mark. [no editing yet, but bookmarks are synced between devices]

Oh, but I have that already. Where are the search arrows though? Oh, the pro version has them.
It's a bookmarklet...not an app...there's no "pro" version.

For ease of email access. I don't want to have to click three buttons to see which email account recieved mail. Separate icons = separate notification = carefree life.
You only have to click one button....not that tough.

fyi...it helps to know what you're talking about before throwing out attitude and sarcasm.

I like turtles

Hahahaha I love this clip.

I understand the OP's points though. I used an iPhone from the first generation (and all the yearly upgrades) and also own the Nexus One. The iPhone is far easier to use and is just more polished. However, it does lack features that SHOULD be there. That notification bar needs to be a pull down and display various data. The notification system needs a rehaul and quick reply for SMS is a must. However, all the other stuff the OP wants is just unnecessary for the iPhone IMHO.
