I particularly like it - the heartbeat pulses on and off, it's just a shame the Fitbit only holds one face at a time as opposed to scrolling through many on an AW.

Earlier this year I decided to retire my Fitbit blaze and had my choices down to AW3 or the ionic. I went with the AW3 as I am pretty invested into Apple and also wanted to try something different. As others have said there are drawbacks and advantages to both. There were features that I really liked from Fitbit but gained some new ones with the AW.
I've got both now, with my AW on my right wrist and the Ionic on my left - I really want to compare the two but heavy snow and treacherous pathways have delayed this. Am I right in saying that Apple doesn't state the number of steps taken, rather just fills the rings? No, of course it does, it's just been a time since I used my AW for exercise. I particularly want to check out the GPS accuracy of the Ionic, too.

The Fitbit is a better device to track fitness that the AW in my opinion. Love my AW but it is a compromise like other devices.

How? They both do heart rate, gps and step counting.

My biggest problem with the Fitbit when I owned them was just how unreliable the hardware was. Between my wife and I we had to have ours replaced 5/6 times and finally gave up.

They seem to have solved that; no more parts to peel away gradually until the entire unit falls out.

A rather nifty graphic is one of the watchfaces, the heart pulses visibly, very futuristic looking although I'm sure some would say tacky:

I haven't had the opportunity of really testing out the Ionic yet as I've been ill.

There is an example of why Apple doesn’t want third party watches faces I think. It definitely cheapens the device.

An app that had a complication showing the same should be easy enough. I don’t think calories go over wire natively though but the others do as I recall. The companion app could provide but the companion app can only read HK data when the device is unlocked so there would be some background work required.

I have been writing my own HK related app recently and added watch integration, it was fun.

AW shows steps if you push on the rings but not on the main watch faces. You can use a complication that will display steps on your watch face but it’s not a live count. It’s too bad you can’t see a live step count as not everyone wants to do the rings.

Fitbit hardware does not come near the quality of Apple’s watch. Bands wear out and the device itself is not built as robust as the AW. As far as fitness the Fitbit app is all about fitness while Apple’s health app is well, not near as comprehensive in my opinion. The Garmin hardware is more robust in the Fenix series and the Garmin app is unparalleled when it come to fitness.
