Calling the store? Yeah, that never works. You call the number listed and they send you to their call center, not actually located in that store. Crock of ****

It is possible and I did it with two X’s today in London.

I paid for price for collection today, when I got there I explained what I wanted to do and he said no problem.

They completed the iUP plans before simply cancelling the collection, iUP’s went through and then he cancelled the collection which automatically refunded me and I walked out on the iUP.

He said refunding/cancelling before iUP would return the devices to stock.

Has anyone been able to or successfully done this even if you've opened and used the phone?

So, it ended up working out for me. I’ll give back Story on what happened.

Originally pre-ordered on my line for the upgrade program with 5-6week delivery and went to bed. Woke up and saw one at a store 2 hours away for pickup on the 3rd. Went to reserve it but couldn’t on my line because I had a pending order., so I did full price and used my wife’s number to reserve it.

Fast forward to pick up today. When I checked in I told them I wanted to switch it to my upgrade plan, they said no problem. After I got called in, the rep stated I would have to activate the phone on the number it was ordered, then return it and then process it on my iUP plan. I told her I could not activate it as it was my wife’s line and that would kill her service.

There was a rep helping a mother customer in a similar situation right next to us that chimed in and said they were waiting for the return to show back up to process the new transaction, and they were told it could take 24 hours.

There was a bunch of other bs that went on basically ending up with the idea that if my phone was returned it would go back to general stock after a 24 hour period and I wouldn’t be able to “rebuy” it.

But my rep said she was determined to figure out how to make it work, after 30 mins from check in she came back so excited to say she had a plan that should work. She went in the back and called some sort of central command for orders to cancel my original order and let them know we would then be selling itmr9ght back to me on the iUP.

She came back out all smilies and probably more excited than I was and said we were good to go. Went through the whole iUP process without any issues and was done in 5 mins. Made the 2 hour drive all worthwhile! She was just happy to learn something new so that she could help others in the same situation in the future.

Apple FTW again!

I was able to do it today, but the store wanted me to return my shipped phone for one in stock. Luckily they had the same model in stock so just basically did a new transaction.

Did this today too. They returned the one shipped to me and had same model in stock that they sold me. I’m on the upgrade program now —- iPhone X plus here we come! Like this phone so far but one year will be about right. Too small!

I just did this. I had not even opened the brown box that I received from UPS yet.

Went to the store, asked the lady at the front, she took my name down, waited 15 minutes. Customer service rep came over, explained it to her, they refunded everything from the AT&T Next plan I was enrolled in, swapped out my SIM card, and approved my IUP loan. Whole process took less than 10 minutes. Couldn't be happier. Also, AT&T doesn't charge the $25 activation fee this way either.

Yup I did it today in the sf Apple store. They refund the phone then they sell it back using the Apple up. They scan in the imei info and get an error. After doing some research he desocovered he had to activate a new att sim for me to get it to go through. Then the sim in my phone went dead and we had to swap it.

I haven't used the upgrade program in the past, so I was not able to get pre-approved for the X. As a result, I bought it outright at 3am for delivery on 11/3. Once I receive the phone, would it be possible for me to "return" the phone to an Apple Store and then re-buy it with the upgrade program?

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: I took it to the Apple Store on 11/3 and they did it for me. They were very nice about it. The phone I purchased was a T-Mobile phone and they returned it and gave me an AT&T one (something about needing the phone to match your carrier). Process took about 40 minutes altogether.
The Apple Store allowed be to go through what I would imagine is the most complicated process one could create (this wasn't my intention!).
I purchased one iPhone X on the iUP for me (SG) and one iPhone X at full price for a relative (Silver). Both on T-Mobile and both through the Apple Store App on pre-order night.
When they arrived, I decided I wanted the Silver and unboxed it and activated it. This meant:

Returning the Silver iPhone X
Returning the SG iPhone X
Repurchasing the Silver iPhone X through IUP
Repurchasing the SG iPhone X at full price

Which also involved closing out my first Citizens One loan and reopening a new one.

I though this would be a train wreck, but it actually went well!

Can I do this if I ordered mine from Apple and chose the Verizon installment plan? I tried doing iUP, but I ended up getting an error whenever I did.

I don't think so- technically you don't own that phone, so you can't "return" it. I think you'd have to return the phone to VZW and re-buy from Apple, in which case you should just enroll in IUP. So maybe check some of the stores in your area and see if they have any iphone Xs in stock.
