Wait wait wait so you're telling me an estimated THIRTY THREE PERCENT of MPB users suffer from this??? This is bigger than antenna-gate in my opinion.

Really?!?! Something that affected the actual functionality of a device on all is worse than a few smudges on a screen? Seriously?

It only happens sometimes. It certainly helps to keep the clean keys, and as someone pointed out, don't put stuff on top.

I have a Radtech Cloth and Iskin Keyboard cover. Outstanding investments. I take the Iskin off and put the cloth in every night when i shut down.

first, i don't work for owc, so this is not a commercial ad. but i purchased a thin leather square from them exactly for this purpose. i use a silicone key guard, and i find that it pops off and smudges my screen when transporting. this leather thing is suade on the keyboard side, and highly polished on the screen side. the good thing is that since it's leather, it's practically indestructable. i've read about plastic ones that can double as a mouse pad, but it comes in a tube, so it takes forever to get it not to curl.

i should add that i've got a anti-reflective, HR screen, so oil deposit is a serious issue. glossy people can easily get a wet cloth and wipe it down, but mine, no.

my $0.02

I got an antiglare High Definition screen and I got a nice line right on the middle of the screen corresponding to the space bar.
Anybody got a tip to get it away safely? since it is not a glass screen I cant just wipe it away. Of course if I dim the brightness and depending of the angle of vision I dont notice it so much... oh the Genius bar guy told me once that this happen when I close the lid with the still hot MBP. Maybe the temperature melted the grease? I thought it might be burned into. Quite relieved to hear that is "only" grease.....

Radtech cover and BT keyboard and Magic mouse here. Problem solved. Some people are just too anal and aren't happy unless they have something to complain about. I am too busy actually using my computer to notice (as most said it isn't really noticeable unless the screen is off, and I only see it when opening my computer as I never turn it off. With the Radtech cover no problems.

Try the micro cleaning cloth that comes with the MBP. Everyone of them has one in the box (down with the software. That was what I used to use to cover my keyboard with my 2008, now with my 2011, I have a Radtech screensaver and love it (doubles as a cleaning cloth as well, got one for the wife's MBP also).
I have used the micro cloth with a very light dampness to it as well, and that has worked for me.

I know right???

Well for real though, I called Apple and I simply told them they keys smudge and they said that's not normal and unacceptable and they themselves offered to replace it on those grounds alone.

If so many of you/us are living with this annoyance (or might be expected to) it should be an outrage.

Ans THAT is why Apple is quite awesome in my opinion.

On Topic: I know what you mean. But i don't have fatty/oily fingers so there are no smudges on my screen.

carry around a cloth like a freakin maid...

What the hell's that supposed to mean? Is that comment generally misogynistic or is it just denigrating to women who clean houses for a living? There was no smiley emoticon, so it would seam that this was a serious comment.

Carrying a microfiber cloth with you would bring you down to the level of a "freakin maid"? I'm really not sure. And why would someone who cleans houses be of lower status than you are?

I can't say that I have experience with all house/apartment cleaners, because that would be impossible. I can say that all of the ones I've ever had have NEVER brought any cloths, rags, supplies, or equipment with them. They all use stuff that the customers provide, with the exception of a heavy duty service that might clean a basement or garage.

I always have a lens cloth in my bag, for cleaning various lenses. And a hanky. Does that make me a "freakin maid"? That wouldn't be bad if I was one, but I do other stuff for a living, at least this year. Next year? Who knows. I might be a "freakin maid".

Oh... and if the woman who cleans our house charges her other customers the same amount as us and she has a full schedule, which she does, then that adds up to about $80k/year, taking into account 4 weeks of unpaid leave. I think that's pretty freakin good, especially since she doesn't carry around a cloth.

my 13 mbp closes just fine even with an extra layer of moshi keyboard guard.

my mbp is 2011 btw, but its probably one of those things we'll have to bear with it. Just like how every iphone and ipad's screen brightness varies slightly with each other.

My 2010 13" did this.
My 2011 15" does this.

I wipe the screen with a microfiber cloth to make it go away.

I suppose if I left the computer on my desk and never touched it, it wouldn't happen. But it's a laptop and I carry it around. Anything this thin and this heavy is going to flex, and the glass screen is going to touch the keys, and get finger grease on it. You get used to this sort of stuff when you live with a toddler and a dog, you should see the smudges on the glass on my sliding glass doors, my house windows, my car windows, etc. My MBP screen's grease and smudge accumulation is nothing.

Keep in mind that his forum is a giant minority from actual MBP owners. Not everyone who owns a MBP is on here, and not everyone here has voted in this thread.

Stop eating KFC and using your computer....

Seriously how sloppy are you? Wash your hands before you use the computer BOOM problem solved.

I didn't vote as my option didn't exist ("didn't pay attention to alignment, nor test it out without something between keyboard and screen, have used a protective insert since I received my MBP" would be my option). Hey I like to keep my stuff nice and had the issue on my 2008 so I started out in protective mode from day 1.:D

To be very honest:

I have never heard of this problem (and I know a lot of people who got laptops) and I have never actually encountered this as well...

My 2007 Macbook (pre unibody) did not do it and my 2010 13" MBP does do it, unfortunately.

My solution is the same as what the other posters have mentioned: Putting a microfiber cloth over the keyboard before closing the lid. I am not exactly happy that this is necessary, but I can live with it. The finger prints appeared when putting the laptop into a backpack or similar situations in which some mild (!) pressure was being applied to the lid.

edit: I have clean hands and the keyboard looks absolutely clean as well. I do not think that a lack of hygiene is the issue here. ;)

I keep the cloth there not only to protect the screen, but it is always handy when I need to clean my screen (no digging for it in my bag).

For those wondering, it is not isolated to the MBPs, as my friends with Dell XPS 15" laptops have complained about the same thing.

I agree, the keys shouldn't be hitting the screen unless there is pressure applied to the notebook when it is closed.

priceless thank you!

:D:D

According to the statistical data, 30% (with a +/- ~10% sample variation) of all users live with a constant plague of imprints.

Hmm, I wonder what sub percentage of people have 13s vs 17s and how much more likely they are to have smudges... Maybe the bigger the size the more likely it is to occur for owners...

My Early 08" had this exact problem and Apple wouldn't replace it because it was normal "wear". They ended up replacing the screen due to white pressure points (white dots on the screen) and later on replacing the whole machine.

If I leave my MBP open, my cats fight over who sleeps on the keys as it is a nice warm "heat rock". They sleep on my Airport Extreme too:).
