I was in the same boat as you... two years ago. We waited... my daughter went off to college with her 4 year old iBook. The new MBP's came out in late October... now half way through college her MBP is still good enough and will carry her through the next 2 years.

Apple will update both the MBP and the MacBooks sometime before Christmas... it's my understanding that Intel has slipped the new chipset a month or two... just tell your son to hang on... when the new machine comes out you will get him one and he will be glad he waited that extra time.

That's a funny coincidence -- my older one is heading off to college in Sept (my boy has her old iBook) -- she's his polar opposite in that she hates to upgrade, so she's holding onto her Rev A Macbook until the new version, so she may not get her "college" computer until December....

Hey OP, I share your sentiments exactly.

I'm headed back to school for an MBA and need something by mid-August (I can probably last until early-September). I'm on the verge of the unthinkable; buying a Vista-based Lenovo X61. Don't make me do it Steve!

:p

i dont think a redesign will be coming soon. The MBP's will be redesigned first and usually get small updates first as well not the macbooks.

I'd buy now and enjoy it. Some people just don't realize new technology is bound to be released

Can't wait til the new iPhone is released, then upgrades/redesigns for the MB/MBP's might seem like something that actually could happen... remember Apple, you do still make computers, right?

I'm personally waiting for the Montevina update simply for the upgraded integrated graphics chip (x4500) which will be 3x fast as the POS x3100. I want something that has a CHANCE of playing Diablo 3 and/or Starcraft 2.

exactly....and spore as well

I have given up on waiting and will probably take the plunge on my first mac on saturday. Waiting for an update that may not come and have to potentially face Rev. A problems isnt worth it for me. I want LED screens, Alu. Montevina and i dont think an update like that will happen during the summer as a silent update.

for sure.. that's what im going for too. im going to get the cheapest macbook because in a year or two most of those things will be standard in macbooks.

ok i have no evidence that those will be standard in macbooks.. but in two years time macbooks will probably have some sweet upgrades anyway so .. yeah.

All I want is the next update so I feel like I am not buying right before a refresh. I am not to concerned with a redesign the MBP is clean. I just want the next refresh whether it is small or large and I will be at the Apple store picking up a fresh new machine and then if a huge change comes I will pass it on to my wife or sell and go pick up a fresh new machine. Simple!:apple:

I decided to buy now and wait for a refined Nehalem. I think that's when the FSB is made obsolete, and hopefully we will start to see some uber expensive 4GB RAM chips for laptops to get us up to 8GB.

I am unsure of whether I will buy the new update or wait all the way until Nehalem.
PS- What is so special about nehalem?

Wah-lah!

Basically no frontside bus
DDR3
Hyper-threading returns
Much lower power usage

and my favorite though what has been stated is quite impressive

8MB L3 cache with quad (4), hexa (6) and octo (8) core processors that are in the making.

It's all vaporware of course, but it's nice to think about it. And since Montevina isn't going to give us that much of an update over Penryn, or even a redesign, might as well wait for possible tech breakthroughs.

And if there is a redesign, then wait for it to be refined and get all the kinks out by the time Nehalem comes.

Keep in mind that if you're waiting for nehalem, you're going to be waiting for another year(ish).

i think that life is too short, enjoy your life now

Ya. A year from now, it's not going to matter which Macbook you bought, as it will be two or three revisions old by then. In a race between you and the multi-billion dollar company, you're never going to win by chasing updates.

What's more, the Macbook resale value's great, so I wouldn't worry about not being able to sell it and get most of the money you spent on it back in when you decide to get a new Macbook.

I'm waiting no matter what until September. I don't need to buy my macbook for university until September, so buying one now really doesn't make much sense. Could you imagine buying one now and then a redesign comes out the next month?

And for me, I love the way the Macbook looks right now. I only care about performance. So I hope they update what's inside.

So true. thats what i keep telling myself because i always have the urge to go and buy it now,
