I am not ready to leave apple and mac os. I waited for ever to see the new mac mini's and I do not want a soldered in ssd. I do not need an iMac as screens are a real problem for my eyes (double cataract surgery)

This leave me with the 2012 mac pro as my best option.
The six core xeon processors are good for my needs.
I would drop in a large 2tb ssd
I would drop in a wd gold 2tb as a cloned back up
I would drop in a wd gold 6tb as a time machine
I would link it to an external Nas.

Questions are as follows what is a good price for a 2012 model>

I see many on ebay with a good gpu like a r9 280x in the 900 to 1200 dollar price range

I don't know about prices, but just something to consider: I am pretty sure that other than model #, the 2012 MP is identical to the 2010 MP.

Maybe you can put them in your list of potential Macs to buy.

Deals for the 2012 MP are out there if you're patient. I just picked up mine yesterday for $150 from a good friend of mine who was looking to unload his because he was moving...

I paid $500 for mine from a good seller on ebay. It came with a 1Terabyte drive and 8 gigs of ram. And all of the Apple software. Haven't decided on if I will put an SSD in it, but I love it. It is fun and works flawlessly.

Once you pick up one of these fine towers you can easily upgrade the WiFi/Bluetooth cards in these towers with this kit:

A Genuine Apple WiFi 802.11ac/Bluetooth 4.0 Upgrade Kit Adapter. I have done this upgrade to my other two towers (a 4,1 and a 5,1) and with this upgrade you get Continuity/Handoff and Air Drop... features that the newer Apple products come with.

Well macOS is ready to leave you if buy a cMP.

I wouldn't seek out a computer that's just about to get dumped out of OS support, particularly when macOS 10.15 is going to be the baseline for the Marzipan era of applications (let's give their quality the benefit of the doubt).

[doublepost=1552052883][/doublepost]yeah i read this could be a problem. it is amazing how they have managed to create a desktop issue that I can't really make right for my self.

I just wanted a piece of desktop gear with removable ram and an upgradeable ssd with an i5. they don't make it anymore.

My dell micro is exactly what the new mini should have done. but no so now it is buy wrong gear. to keep current os path open.

the 2014 mini and 2012 mac pro are close to what I need. well the 2012 pro does the job pretty much perfectly but will soon be eol for os.

You could get the 2018 Mini and boot from an external SSD, giving you removable RAM and an upgradeable SSD. Configure with the smallest internal 128GB SSD since you're not going to be using it.
