I finally convinced myself to hit the purchase button. I am a bit disappointed about the ACDs but the system will be good anyway.

So I got:

MP 2.8 octo
8800GT
Wifi
Apple care
30" ACD

Will stick 4GB or 8GB later. Delivery date is end of february :(( I hope it will come sooner. Or even better that Apple updates the ACDs and I'll get the updated one :)

Good? The system will be fantastic =]

Sorry you gotta wait so long, but it'll be worth it :D

Thank you guys. The waiting will be painful especially knowing that its so close. On the other hand, I was waiting for this update since April so few more weeks won't kill me :)

in the UK here, have been trying to buy my Mac Pro on and off for the last 6 hrs, but the UK store is crippled, everytime i attempt to checkout it times out. Anyone else finding this?

I did it too!

I have been waiting and watching for four years to make the plunge. I have been using a PM9600 for years and years and years (os X & x-postfacto). Once the refresh of the MP was announced I ordered it that day. Plus I also got the student discount. I was pleased that bluetooth was now standard. I had Aperture pre-installed. I will also wait to buy RAM since it has 2gigs standard: Here is my configuration:
Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
2GB (2x1GB)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/
One 16x SuperDrive
AirPort Extreme Card (Wi-Fi)
APERTURE
APPLE WIRELESS MIGHTY MOUSE
WIRELESS KEYBD/ OS X

All for $3500 after tax. I was stoked that a $5000 jobby a week ago is now $3500. I have waited for so long to buy I guess I can wait until Feb.20. :D

Yeah, me too!

Yeah, me too. I went for:

Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3
320GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s (Bay 1)
500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3 Gb/s (Bay 2)
Apple Wireless Keyboard
AppleCare 3Yr Protection Plan PowerMac/MacPro
Apple Cinema Display 30" HD Flat Panel (DVI Conn)
Canon Pixma iX4000 A3 Colour BubbleJet Printer

I pulled the trigger just now too:

Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeo
2GB (2x1GB)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
320GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb
One 16x SuperDrive
AirPort Extreme Card (Wi-Fi)
APPLE WIRELESS MIGHTY MOUSE
WIRELESS KEYBD/ OS X
Grand total: 2695 including tax.

Thank god for the ADC discount! I also ordered 8 gigs of ram from macsales.com

Now I get to wait until 2/22... :(

Yeah, I have mine coming on the 22nd too. I couldn't afford the Octo so I got the single cpu quad.
I hope it comes with an empty socket so I can upgrade myself later. I ordered 4Gb of ram from OWC.

EDIT: I figured I would just go with the ATI card so I wouldn't have to wait so long. I'm hoping to be
able to upgrade the video card later also.

One 2.8GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon
2GB (2x1GB)
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB
320GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb
One 16x SuperDrive
AirPort Extreme Card (Wi-Fi)
APPLE MIGHTY MOUSE
WIRED KYBRD/MAC OS X
Country Kit
Ships by: Jan 18 - Jan 23
Delivers by: Jan 22 - Jan 29

I also took the plunge yesterday:

Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
2GB (2x1GB) plus 16g (4x4gb) from OWC
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
(2) SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB
One 16x SuperDrive
Apple Care
Cintiq 20WSX interactive Tablet
Epson v500 Scanner

Told the Wife all about it last night and she did not kill me!

Ordered mine and it was only about $250 off...Hmmmm...I guess the discount depends upon the school?

I think the regular student discount is 10% and the ADC discount on the mac pro is a little over 20%.

Haha nice. My GF was not to happy to hear how much it will cost:

Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
2GB (2x1GB)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
One 16x SuperDrive
Apple Care

Will be adding 8GB of RAM from OWC, 2 Samsung F1 drives, and either a "new" 2408WFP or 23" Cinema, depending on when the Dell model gets released.

Feb 15 hurry up!

What is the ADC discount, and how is this different than the student discount? Where is the option for the ADC discount?

I already hit the button on January 8th, but FedEx should be delivering my 8 core monster (2.8) on Friday...argh, 2 more days, I've been waiting to get one of these since July...!!!

This is also my first Mac, so I'm especially excited that I won't have to run Windows anymore ;)

Lotsa people here bought Mac Pros lately....Apple must be thinking "why didn't we do this SOONER? Holy crap, look at all the orders coming in!!!" :D

It's a huge secret PITA.

You go here:

http://developer.apple.com/products/student.html

And spend 99 dollars on the ADC student membership. You also create an ADC account. Within 24 hours you get an activation code emailed to you. You then go to the ADC site to activate your account, I think it's here:

http://connect.apple.com/

You have to fax your passport and a list of classes you're taking this semester to prove you're a student. You then get a onetime discount by clicking on the store from this link (bookmarks don't work):

http://developer.apple.com/membership/usa.html

It's like trying to get into that secret bar in disneyland. Certainly a bit of a hassle, but I think I saved around 500-600 bucks so it was well worth it. The Mac Pro seems to be the most heavily discounted item.

You should have waited!

You do realise they are about to update the purchase button!!!!

Hmm...I followed the last link and seemed to be able to place my order. Does Apple follow up with checking your ADC status filing?

Yes, they won't process your order until your account has been "verified" - that means marked off as a student, activated, and then verified through faxed ID/school records.

Other people have posted about it; Apple will put the sale in "pending" mode until your account is verified.

I did the whole deal today, so it can be pretty quick, but it is a bit of a hassle. But I can be hassled for 500 bucks.

This got me all excited....

Then this spoiled it all for me:D

They're very flexible about what "student" means, though. In other words, I think if you signed up for one class at your community college, printed it out, showed you as "enrolled" and then cancelled, they would accept it.

Not that I encourage that sort of thing of course.
