They're very flexible about what "student" means, though. In other words, I think if you signed up for one class at your community college, printed it out, showed you as "enrolled" and then cancelled, they would accept it.

Not that I encourage that sort of thing of course. :eek:

And is this what you did? A student of life?;)

Me too! I just placed my order. Finally I am transiting to the Intel Mac world. :cool: I had a built-to-order as I wanted a richer graphics card since I am doing a lot of video editing in HD and some HD Motion projects.

  • Two 2.8Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
  • 2GB RAM from Apple and 4GB (2x2) from OWC. I figured I may add more later.
  • 500GB Hard drive
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
  • Wireless Mighty Mouse
  • Wired Keyboard (cause I use those USB ports)

The only drawback to the order is that it says it will take 3 -5 weeks. :( Estimated shipping date is placed at Feb 22.

Is anyone else experiencing this long delay due to the GeForce 8800 graphics card?

congrats everyone!
hope to see some killer mac setup pics in the comming weeks!

This is probably not possible, but can my brother who is a legit college student get ADC discount and purchase a computer in my name? Otherwise I guess he could buy it but I would "own" it.

We ordered the same build...I get mine a day earlier though!...ordered late last night.

Um, everyone!

I am so tired of waiting I cancelled my order placed on 1/8 with the 8800 and re-ordered without it so that I can get the computer faster. I ordered the 8800 upgrade kit and will throw that in when it arrives in March (!?).

Absolutely! I paid for it all but it's technically my girlfriend's as she is still in school.

i just got screwed tonight by a raid card

apple just changed shipping from 7-10 days to 2-3 weeks

So I got:

MP 2.8 octo
8800GT

30" ACD

Will stick 4GB or 8GB later. Delivery date is end of february :(( I hope it will come sooner. Or even better that Apple updates the ACDs and I'll get the updated one :)

Sorry, I could probably spend the time digging through the Apple Store to find the answer,,, but so much easier to just ask you smart guys. ;)

Ah good. I just moved up the waiting list by one spot. :D

Awesome. But if something happens to it, your girlfriend has to take to the AppleStore, and pick it up?

Since I doubt my brother will ever buy an Apple I don't think he will mind the ADC once-in-a-lifetime student discount! :)

It's a huge secret PITA.

You go here:

http://developer.apple.com/products/student.html

And spend 99 dollars on the ADC student membership. You also create an ADC account. Within 24 hours you get an activation code emailed to you. You then go to the ADC site to activate your account, I think it's here:

http://connect.apple.com/

You have to fax your passport and a list of classes you're taking this semester to prove you're a student. You then get a onetime discount by clicking on the store from this link (bookmarks don't work):

http://developer.apple.com/membership/usa.html

It's like trying to get into that secret bar in disneyland. Certainly a bit of a hassle, but I think I saved around 500-600 bucks so it was well worth it. The Mac Pro seems to be the most heavily discounted item.

You sir are my hero! Thank you! Just bought my Mac Pro.

Thanks a lot, Nugget. Like I needed to be any more giddy waiting. :D

Misery loves company. :)

But the beauty is that you still can on the Mac Pro!

The beauty is that I *can*, but I don't *have* to ;)

I just got my shipping info from OWC for my extra 4 gigs...this machine is absolutely (to paraphrase Steve) "gonna scream!" :)

My Mac Pro is scheduled for Friday...can't wait :)

Y'all might wanna check out joining the NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) - $100 per year, learn a LOT of Photoshop, and....Discounts from the Apple store ;) (and no proving you're a student or anything...)

Here's the price on a single core 2.8 default setup...

Check out the attached pic :)

I think I ended up saving close to $300 (maybe a little more) on my setup - I got the default 2.8 octo with wifi and wireless mouse for around $2600.

If they update the display before your order is shipped then you will get the new one. If its delivered to you and they update it within 14 days then you can return it and get the updated one.

wow, congrats on all you 3.2 buyers. That is going to be one blazing machine. Wish I could bring myself to spend the extra $1600 but the only way I could get it was to close my eyes and hit checkout and I kept missing the link. :)

I'm on the 2.8 now and it seems amazing. Just wait until the new instructions get taken advantage of. :eek:

The only people who really need the 3.2 over the 2.8 are doing major video editing, where time is money.

For most of us, the 2.8 octo is gonna be insanely fast already (hell, even the 4 core will still be seriously more than the average power user really *needs*...)

C'mon Friday, get here already... :eek:

I ordered my new Mac Pro at my trusted Apple dealer

My 7 years and 6 months old PowerMac G4 with 500 MHz processor, AGP-video and 22" Apple Cinema display will in a few weeks be replaced by a new Mac Pro :D :

* Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
* 2GB (2 x 1GB) {+ 16 GB (4 x 4GB) from OWC}
* 3 x 500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
* NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (Two dual-link DVI)
* One 16x SuperDrive
* AirPort Extreme card (Wi-Fi)
* Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse + Apple Mighty Mouse
* Apple Keyboard (Dutch) + Mac OS X
* iWork '08 preinstalled
* Five USB ports
* Two FireWire 400 ports
* Two FireWire 800 ports
* Apple Cinema HD Display (30" flat panel)
* Apple Airport Extreme unit

I think my new machine is a solid work horse with excellent but not extreme specifications. I'm even content with the current 30" ACD because it is a beautiful screen and good enough for me ;) . I will use the wireless mouse daily and the wired mouse only when I boot this machine from, e.g., a TechTool Pro disk (Bluetooth will not work then).

My choice of components and also purchasing 16GB from OWC has been influenced by the discussions in various threads on this forum.

And yes, I was relieved when I read that other people too find important the good looks of their working environment. That's why I even now stick with the 30" Apple Cinema HD Display.

i hit the button too!

I hit the button and got:

Single 2.8ghz Xeon
8800GT
Airport card
Rest of the specs are default

I saved $500 by going to the single processor, but then I thought about it and said another CPU for $500 isn't too bad so I hit the other button CANCEL. Then I hit the button again for

Dual 2.8ghz Xeon (8core)
8800GT
Airport Card
Rest of the specs are default

But then I thought again, I am never going to use 8 cores at all for my intended use. I am not doing any rendering and 4 cores should be enough. So I hit the other button CANCEL again. And went back to the single processor setup.

Then I thought about it some more. I could have an empty or crippled socket where the 2nd CPU should be. That started bugging me more and more. $500 is not that much in the greater scheme of life...

Well, I think you know where I am going with this. But I did have to stop after reordering the dual processor setup. The credit card holds/issues provide a natural limit to this behavior. And it did push back the shipping date. Ah well.

I went through the EXACT same processes as you did ordering the EXACT same configurations.
Great minds must think alike :)
