that desktop mac picture

I would imagine that the desktop picture above would just be a transport case (since it looks fairly hard waring) for new hardware/motherboards for sending systems to developers. After all, software developers/partner companies wouldn't need to see a new case design if they are only testing the internals. That way they can ensure that their latest case designs are kept under wraps/have minimum exposure until their release.

are you saying you have 10 inch^2 pockets?

Funny that Pen Computing sponsors when Palm and Hanspring are not attending

So why would Palm and Handspring not be coming and PC be sponsoring. This is even more interesting considering how poorly Palm has supported OS X .. delay delay and then release junk for Beta (oh wait that was only an internal public beta.. ignore our web site .. oh 300 users on our ftp site.. oops) and then don't show up for MWSF. I am thinking against all rumors to the contrary that since no other major Palm player is sked to be there and PC is sponsoring Apple is doing the PDA/Tablet thing. Heading to SF tomorrow morning and I can't wait to find out..

I've just been smelling a whole Palm-buyout the last few days. Palm needs to be aquired, Apple wants Palm for the engineers from Be they aquired not so long ago. Why? Because Apple has a new Newton.

Not to Be!

Apple has passed on buying Be so many times in the past that I think it's unlikely that they've experienced a conversion now. Buying Palm would be a pretty expensive way of getting Be - it would be like eating a bagel because you want the seasame seeds.

I think we can all be greatful that Apple bought NeXT rather than Be - imagine if they'd built Rhapsody using Be rather than OS X using NeXTStep. No UNIX, no Carbon environment, no apps. Apple would have found themselves in the position Be are in today with no developer support, some neat technology perhaps, but no one interested in it. Also, consider how much damage Gaussé did to Apple last time around. I hardly think they'd welcome him back.

Palm Desktop for OS X looks pretty promising to me, and if Apple has any sense, they'll continue to steer well clear of the PDA market that they had to pull out of with their tail between their legs in '98, and leave it to the ones who do it best.

But...

Palm isn't doing a good job...

Look at the Newton Videos posted on this site (front page). They're amazing and surpass a Palm in every aspect..! The Newton was like a Pocket PC except was one 5 years ago!

Let's think about Newton

If the Newton really was so great, Apple wouldn't have abandoned it. It never turned a profit for Apple, and here's why:

- It was too expensive
- It was too big
- It was not the standard

I am still the proud owner of a Newton, but lets face it, the Palm took off and the Newton never did.

The only reason for Apple to return to the PDA market is if they have something that offers substatially more value to a wider audience than anything that is currently available. Bringing back the big, expensive Newton that was never popular in the first place in not the solution.

Having said that, seeing these videos has made me get my old Newton out of the closet and have a play again, but that's just nostalgia.
