Does anyone know how well it plays 1080p on external 27" display?

The 3000 plays 1080p content flawlessly, i believe in a review they ran multiple 1080p streams simultaneously without issue.

wow, that kind of sucks for the people that waited.. i know for the 320m you could at least play starcraft 2 on low... but now, is that even possible with the new macbook pro??

Everyone is all butthurt over the Intel HD 3000, but the fact is it offers equivalent performance. But you get much better battery life.

Thats a tradeoff I'm willing to take. If I want more graphics power I'll just get a 15" MBP.

People play Starcraft 2 on a 9400M. The Intel HD 3000 is stronger than a 9400M.

was battery life inadequate or something before?? I have an i7 15 inch and that thing great and it lasts me all day when i go to school and take notes. Obviously i'm limited to the things I can do when going to 5-6 hours straight but still. I can only assume that the 13 inch would even be better? I mean i don't think battery life was ever an issue before, I think what it needed was a slight bump in horsepower, which it got with the new i5's but the fact that the graphics card is worse than before is really disappointing nonetheless

Ok, what would you have them do then? They can't keep using a chip that is discontinued. It's probably not a good idea to go with Motorola (unless they could make it so you could install windows on it? I admit I'm ignorant there).

The only plausible thing I can think of is remove the ODD and trust me, Apple would have people bitching about that (I'm sure that if it was possible to remove it and put in a dedicated graphics card that the idea wasn't lost on them). They probably didn't due to either marketing (it would look worse to have no ODD than to have not the best graphics card, not everyone is going to realize that the new graphics card is at best not much better than the old one), or maybe if they did it with the dedicated graphics card it would eat too much battery and it is very easy to understand why they wouldn't sacrifice that on a laptop that people choose for portability reasons.

And yes, sorry, marketing is important when designing an object. It does you no good to design some
thing if it doesn't sell well. After all, in the end, that's Apple's goal, to sell these things.

What's your solution? (Keep in mind I'm happy with my 2010 but I honestly don't see why people are ragging on the new 13" so much)

The 13" specs that were leaked were for the low end 13" MBP. It's possible the higher end 13" MBPs will ship with a dedicated GPU.

I'll also note that the Sandy Bridge IGP is faster than the 320m in the previous Macbook Pros. They've been directly benchmarked against each other.

actually I really don't have one lol, I was just speaking my mind that was all. I guess people (or just me) expect better every time there is an update so I guess this was a change while considering how fast things get outdated these days when it relates to technology. And no I would be strongly against removing odd. Maybe I am old school but am I the only person that likes going to hmv and buying a cd just so I have the case and the nice booklet inside?? =) so yeah, I really do need ODD not to mention how much time it would take to install a game like starcraft 2 from the internet. I don't have the fastest connection but it's decent, i download stuff from the internet at around 1mb/s, so for a person like me, not having ODD would be too inconvenient. It's true that you could just buy the external drive or w/e but that's just inconvenient and would feel ****** if i had to fork out extra cash for something that should be in there in the first place.

Yes, i guess i am really old school hahahaha

This is 99% impossible for the high-end 13" macbook pro to have dedicated graphic card. Seems like the 15" and 17" would be the only one to get dedicated graphic card. From past experience, the difference between the lower end and higher end would be different processor.

Regardless, the Sandy Bridge IGP is faster. It isn't a huge leap, but it still performs better than the 320m. The freaking out is unnecessary. :)

This isn't nearly as bad as the time that Apple adopted the GMA 950. Now that was a true step back...

Seriously. For some reason nobody can believe that an Intel IGP is good.

That's what people are hoping. But I'm not holding my breath.

Oh, I like having the ODD myself even though I have less use of it than you. It makes to me the computer have a more complete package and I agree I don't want to carry an external DVD drive around for use when I'm traveling (and I like being able to watch movies on my computer while on the plane).

I think the moral here is that Intel is the one we should be griping at, not Apple, for not allowing anything but their integrated graphics card to be used with that chip.

Seriously. For some reason nobody can believe that an Intel IGP is good.

Cause nVidia is a company dedicated to manufacture graphic cards?
I don't know, I am using Intel GMA 950 (first-gen macbook) while I am typing this reply.

Therefore, I am excited for the new macbook pro (probably 15" thro.. :D)

I know this is a long shot, but maybe Apple is going to remove the ODD in the high end 13" MBP. They could fit a bigger battery along with a dedicated graphics chip in it. They could justify it by saying that users who are spending 1400-1500 on a 13" MBP care more about battery life and graphics performance than an ODD.

First off a gpu is not only used for games. Second i have boot canp so windows games are relavabt too. Third: hardware specs are not supposed to becone worse witj a refresh.

I think it's also worth pointing out that whole apple removed the 320M, theyre still chargig almost the same price, and the cpu on the base model is not much more expebsive than the core 2 duo. So basically, Performance/dollar is actually even worse than it seema.

People play Starcraft 2 on a 9400M. The Intel HD 3000 is stronger than a 9400M.

Oh, that's good. I really recommend playing it through bootcamp anyway, it runs alot more smooth so you could squeeze a couple frames there as well. plus you don't get the annoying mouse acceleration when playing through bootcamp.

I will tell you why: because it's supposed to be an UPDATE, newer technology, faster, etc. Two years have gone by, the price has not gone any cheaper, so... how on Earth can it justify having a worse GPU?

Majority of people that will be upgrading will likely be coming from 9400M anyway so they will be seeing an improvement.

let's see what i'm working with...Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
yep. haha

9400m is even better than what i have. IGP wouldn't be that much of a pain for me :D

Though, it would be nice for once if Apple actually adopted a current-gen graphics card, like the 400 series from Nvidia, but you know they'd charge out the ass for it.

I'm still hoping that in the higher-end of the new models (I wouldn't be interested in a 13-inch, unless they increase that screen resolution), that you would be able to get discrete graphics as an option.

But then again, they're probably going to lose it across the board.

By having a faster processor and a longer lasting battery? And from what I've read the GPU is on par with the 320M

Let's face it, it's not like the NVidia 320M was some graphical beast.

For an MBA, sure. For an MBP, 13" or not, no. But then again the 12" PowerBook G4 is what I deem Apple's finest hour.

Are people missing the point that they cannot put an Nvidia card on the i5 processor cause not enough room in the 13" for a dedicated card and intel won't allow anything but theirs on the integrated part?

Last year people were bitching that they put the core2duo in and they should have put an ichip in. This year they do that and people bitch about the graphics card (which is why last year they didn't use the ichips so they could put a better than what intel had at the time graphics card in. Difference is, this year they don't really have a choice as the core2duo chip is gone!).

Read my previous post to some one else, what would you have Apple do? They are sure to get people pissed off if they remove the ODD (to the general consumer that is far more obvious of an omission than the graphics chip which many consumers may not even realize isn't an improvement on last years, they may not even know what last years was cause most people buying these are replacing computers that are years old, this will be an improvement in graphics for them). Losing battery life would be a big no no. Only thing left is to use Motorola which I'm not sure would allow windows to be installed on the laptop and seems like people don't think Motorola makes a chip to even compete.

If you are going to blame anyone, blame Intel for not allowing anything but their graphics card with the ichips.
