Cappuccino anybody?

sounds like you need a power inverter for your car, works wonders for long trips or secluded places.

Who knows. Maybe Apple decided to solder the battery into the system.

this seems highly improbable given the fact that the genius bar would need to replace the battery at some point anyways. I don't see where more than 8 hours would really be necessary. 8 hours is enough to use at work all day, to take on a flight to another country or any other lengthy timescale. In most cases if you needed it for more than 8 hours you would likely not be using it heavily and/or you would have access to an outlet at some point or another, whether it was in an airport or in your car.

Apple can't please everyone.

I'm guessing the people who would rather have an ~8 hour battery life in a non user replaceable battery far out weigh those who would rather haul around extra batteries. Apple's just done the math.

Personally, I've never wanted a 17" MBP until now. That battery life (even if it's 7 tops) sure beats the HELL out of any other laptop in that weight class and most others in any. It's good to see someone making improvements in computer battery technology.

agreed, I would gladly take this option in my 15" if it meant i could get 8 hours of use.

That battery will last at least 4/5 years I think if mine is anything to go by if its three times the longevity in theory

By then most people will have uprgraded anyway

i think it also puts people in that position of 'oh my machines starting to suffer, and look a new one has come out'

Its subversively presents a revenue stream by creating this situation where a new system looks more inviting.

I think the bigger story is the non removable hard drive and easy access to put in your own 8 GBs of ram.

I think Steve Jobs has a non removable brain! :p

This is another in a long line of Apple missteps that shows me they are far more interested in keeping amateurs, housewives and cappuccino-drinking college-student hippies happy 'cuz they sure don't dive a damn about working pros like myself who depend of them to keep up their end of the bargain!

I resent that.

Im a tequila shooting, beer swilling college student thank you very much.

Coming from someone who has upgraded the drives in TiBooks, 12" & 15" Powerbooks, iBooks, etc. doing the drive in the new 17" is going to be cake. Remove a couple of screws and there it is.

For those of you who want a second battery for a long flight take a look at something like the powergorilla product. It's an external battery pack that can charge laptops. I use the powermonkey version for my iphone and other cell phones to charge them on the go.

You guys can be so jingoistic and short-sighted it makes me wanna scream!

".....Hauling extra batteries is a PITA?!!.....I've never been in a situation where a power outlet wasn't available somewhere.....My 15-inch MBP gets about 4 hours of life..."

Just because you might not have any issues with battery life or the need for extra batteries, just what makes you think the rest of the world might find this new move incredibly stupid?!! In the world I live in where photographers like myself are lucky if we can get 1.5-hours outta a battery because we shoot tethered and the computer powers the digital back, the lack of an extra battery makes buying the new 17" laptop impossible! And anybody using anything that uses the the firewire bus for power is gonna have the same issues.

oh your the ranty guy, did you get a nice night sleep?:)

Anyway, I have a feeling apple will not want you to be able to replace the battery, but will allow us to do RAM and the HDD

Does adding "NYC" to your post increase your credibility somehow?

I'm going to stop hugging this tree, put down my cappuccino and think this over...
