There are a lot of free quality apps in just about every category, so no you would not need to spend anymore money after getting an iPad in my opinion, but good luck holding out on purchases. ;)

I hear what your saying but 59p here and 99p there all add up at the end of the day. I'm just wondering if I'll get basic functionality out of the iPad without having to put my hand in my pocket again.

One example is getting files from my PC to the iPad. How does one go about that and is there is free app for it or do I have to put my hand in my pocket??

Its good to know there are a lot of good free apps cheers.

It's odd! You have a main computer! Don't you have applications (software) for that main computer. Surely, you bought some software for that main computer, right? Apps for the main computer usually costs way more than apps for the iPad.

90% of my time is using free apps. But the one exception you might want to make, if you're going to be using it primarily for web browsing (as I do too), is spending a couple dollars on a browser. There are much better browsers than Safari in the App store, especially if you're used to using desktop browsers.

Safari iPad = more like Safari iPhone 2.0.
iCab iPad = more like Safari desktop.

Hello everyone.

Guess what I'm typing this on?

I've this minute unboxed it and DL the latest iTunes and set it up.

I think I'm in love :D

It's pretty late so I'm off to bed but I will be up early to have a play with this baby and expand on my initial post.

Thanks for your replies.

Speak to you tomorrow - I have so many questions :)

Wow, congrats! Glad to hear you're enjoying it so far! Looking forward to hearing how you get on long term. :):):)

So you never buy an app for your computer? I find it quite inane that you would waste a computer on basic tasks that can only be done if you don't have to spend a dime.
That's a pretty lame opinion. There are a ton of amazing open source applications out there. In fact it's very easy to get a linux box and fill it with a lot of amazing software that's all free. Most of the software I use daily is free (opera, adium, vi, cyberduck, netbeans, etc.)

all those projects are great, but i don't think i'll be teaching my aunts about vi or netbeans, sound hound and ibooks, on the other hand, they love.

I love how every forum conversation where someone asks for information on something that the forum topic turns into WHY they would even want that information, or how wanting that information makes them a terrible human being.

I haven't bought that much software for the iPad. Most of the applications are just too expensive in my opinion.

Pages, Goodreader, etc. You'll find the iPad quite capable even without them, but I recommend jailbreaking and allocating yourself a few dollars (or pounds) to buy a round of apps. Nothing too fancy, but relying only on free applications will limit you a bit.

How can you say a couple of bucks is too expensive? Do you realize the amount of work that goes into developing apps? This whole thread is ridiculous. Sounds to me like your a jail breaker with the intention of pirating iPad apps. Bunch of cheap skates.

Reading comprehension fail. Poster you quoted specifically said to budget a few dollars/pounds for apps. And jailbreak does not equal pirating.

i want to buy an electric car, but only want to charge it with the portable gas generator i will put in the trunk. is this car right for me?

the answer to this question also applies to the op: that will work, but why would you want to?

Hello all.

Well I've had a good weekend with the iPad and I think its amazing. The browsing experience is so good, I hate mouse pads on netbooks and the touch screen of the iPad is much better IMHO.

The screen is lovely and clear too, much better than my laptop. I can see myself using the laptop less and less now. Battery life is awesome - i was heavily using it all saturday night and most of sunday and there was still some juice left in it.

Apps I have got so far are Flipboard, Dropbox, Twitter, a wikipedia app, The Times app, Kindle and Google Earth.

I have also seen the Rebirth app and the Korg MS20 app . I may have to put my hand in my pocket and pick them up as they look awesome :D :D oops what was I saying the other day :)

Just got a few questions. What is the best way to remove finger marks from the screen? Is it safe to do internet shopping etc on the iPad? Are viruses not as common as on windows OS's??

Another thing just a quick one. I'm wondering if other peoples home buttons are 'clicky'?

I think I picked it up in landscape mode last night and possibly depressed the button from a funny angle or put a bit too much pressure on it and now it seems more 'clicky'.

It might just be my mind playing tricks with me as I don't seem to remember a click when I got it the other day but I might not have noticed it due to being in awe of the thing.

It could just be the way it's designed and I never noticed it till now??

glad you liked the ipad :)

a light wipe from a damp microfiber cloth should be all you need to remove fingerprints. the screen has an oil repellant coating that makes wipe downs easy. avoid any harsh chemicals like alcohol or window cleaners.

ios is a fair bit safer than your average windows computer. there haven't been any reports yet of viruses for ios - at least non jailbroken ios devices...

there are some things it handles worse, like cookies, but as far as secure websites, it should be very good. just make sure you get a green lock and title in the safari window like this link

Yes it's pretty safe as long as you're using trusted sites (same as in a computer). But you should be careful about how much you buy online, it adds up you know...
