I feel sort of duped by the iPads. Anyone who got the iPad 2 got a great deal. Seeing as they are still being sold in 2014/2015 its likely they will get IOS 8/9? The iPad one and three owners got screwed. iPad Air/Retina owners will get screwed in 6 months when apple "revolutionizes" everything by shoving an fingerprint scanner in. The iPad update cycle is not constant enough for me to make such a big investment.

i was one of those who bought the iPad 2 16GB wifi at the $319 refurb price and rode that for a while. i agree, the iPad 2 was probably the best value of any Apple product, especially when bought for $319 as a certified refurb. it's funny because the same could be said about the iPhone 4S. that A5 chip was and still is a great chip

The obvious thing here is retina display must be too expensive to allow ipad 4 to drop down.

However why can't they put a lightning dock on ipad 2? Ipad mini even got a new colour for the first generation now and it comes with lightning.

My only guess is they don't want to change the spec of ipad 2 or it's good marketing as there's still a lot of old 30 pin docks for sale.

Ipad 2 is like Windows XP going on and on.

But yes I agree ipad 1 only got IOS 4 and 5 did it not? It's defo been left behind.

Not sure it will get IOS8. They had to phase out the 3GS this year despite it being sold up until the new iphone. I can't imagine many got this phone but maybe the odd person did.

im scared of buying the air because of the inevitable spec bump on the camera QQ

is it too much to ask for 8mp in late 2013 -_-

The iPad 2 16 GB with iOS 5 was being sold on QVC earlier this week as the TSV (Today's Special Value--which is their best sale of the day) for $599!

Rather than feel bad for people who are buying iPad 2s now at $399, I actually feel a bit of relief for the people who bought the iPad 2 a few days ago at $599 that the price hasn't gone down further, making their purchases even more overly expensive. QVC does add accessories to the purchase, but I don't think they in any way make up for the price difference. Last year they were selling the iPad 2 bundled with accessories for $699, so it came down in price $100 at least.

As far as I know, QVC is not an Apple-authorized reseller, so I would guess they buy them from big box stores that have leftover inventory, maybe get a slight discount for buying in volume, and then make their profits of the accessories. Just a guess. But wow is it painful to watch them talk about the iPad 2 with iOS 5 as if it's the latest and greatest.

Although, I guess I'm cynical. The person that buys it might really like buying it that way and enjoy the product. And they do offer non-interest payment plans (they call it easy pay).

I still fail to see how iPad 3 owners got duped. It's not like it just shut off and quit working the second the 4 came out.

Generally Apple updates there products once a year. When I purchased this in September for my Mom's birthday I did not expect it to be replaced within a few weeks. I purchased it mid life cycle, not at the end of cycle.

Having an iPhone and a computer, any iPad is a complete waste of money.

Not necessarily. My iPhone is my go to mobile device. I use it almost 24/7. My iPad is my in between device. I use it for reading more then I use my iPhone. I use it for creating content I would not do on the small phone screen. Then I use my laptop when I have work to do.

I am glad you enjoyed your purchase :). I agree its excellent.

Why do people think the iPad 2 will be attractive to schools and businesses? The iPad mini retina is the same price and SO MUCH BETTER. There really is no logic to the price - I hope Apple doesn't sell any and drops the price $50 or discontinues it.

Only old Grannies shop from there so even getting an iPad 1 would be like getting a rocket ship for them.

I totally agree. Also makes me wonder why they "rushed" to get the 4 out since most speculated it was to standardize the lightning connector. Doesn't make any sense now.

I'm guessing it's supply issues. The mini retina is harder to produce, and therefore maybe harder to bulk supply? Corporations and schools get a hefty discount too when they purchase in bulk.

Also it's snob appeal. Something that's given out en masse to a whole company is more likely to be thought of as a "work device" and the same workers will hopefully walk into an Apple store and purchase a nice shiny mini retina for their kids.

I suspect the longevity of the iPad 2 is due to their adoption in business/commercial usage... people have built custom enclosures and other applications, so keeping one model for a longer period without a form factor change means that this market is covered.

I have an iPad 2 from work... started Pages install on my iPhone 5s, then the iPad 2... it finished first on the iPad. The internals aren't bad at all, aside from the lack of the newer retina display.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Didn't Apple also sell a ton of iPad 2's to government agencies?? Large corporate and government buyers may have some life expectancy requirements written into their contracts.

I feel bad for anyone who buys any of the current iPads. They'll have a brand new one come out in 6months or less with a finger print sensor probably. Last iPad I bought(and ever will buy) was the 3 which got replaced by the 4 in no time.

It's time to get over this.

As for the 2, I'm sure it has more to do with education and enterprise than anything. These buyers place huge orders and are often heavily invested in peripherals that only fit iPad 2/30 pin connector. They'll want to keep purchasing replacements that fit their stuff--otherwise rendering sometimes millions of dollars in hardware unusable.

Apple isn't currently marketing iPad 2 heavily in retail, it's hard to believe they'd start now.

Why?
I can save $100 on iPads for each of my field reps and they can still use SalesForce and SignNow just fine.

What am I missing???

Only one iPad was released within 6 months of the previous model.

Calm down.

Unfortunately I think he is right. I think around March/April they will refresh it with the touchID and perhaps IGZO (dreaming that one :) )
That way they will bring it back to march/april period like it used to be. I don't think they will wait whole full year to update for touchID. It will be sooner.

And to me, no touchID is no sale so I'm waiting :)

iPad 2 should have been dropped and the iPad 4 entry level price would have been better.

Also, the Mini at just $30 off its original retail is a rip!

The iPad Mini and the iPad 2 are probably still around to make the new models look like bargains.

Thanks for keeping apple stock so high. You the man.

I am confused.
If I am in 10 markets and have 25 reps in each market requiring SalesForce and SignNow, that is 250 end users.

Buying an iPad 2 over the iPad air would save $25,000 with being equally productive.

Not sure what fantasy land you live in but $25,000 is a lot of money to any business.

I agree. From an individual consumer stand point, of course you buy the latest and fastest to satisfy your need for a newer thing. From a business owners stand point, this matters less as you are distributing the device for your workers and as long as they get the job done, the owner won't care.

Now if your business is in tech and the image of up-to-date hardware is important, then that's a different story, but for any other business, workers that have a tablet is going to be impressive since it's still a fairly new device to be used in businesses today.
