Sorry I just tend to say "mate." I would be inclined to agree with what you're saying though. I remember the days of AOL chatrooms...

Anyway, we're getting off-topic, so back to Mac's!

Loving refurbs

:D I'm typing this on my "new" 2.2mhz refurb. I ordered it a week ago Wednesday and it took a week to get here by ground. Mine seems perfect. No flaws, now scratches and seems to be working perfecly. The only difference in that RF serial number and the lack of the pretty box. A couple of days in I've got 4 Gig of ram and $100 perfs, all for the same price as a new "old" one (last generation). I'm in :apple: heaven.

I think I saved about $400 or about 30%.:) I kind of like the feeling. I was one of those who really didn't need the Pro (Macbook would have been fine), but when the prices came down decided the graphics card would be nice. I also like shinny things!

Sorry to read about those who haven't had quite the same experience. Good luck at the story. I'm sure they will do right by you.

the aluminum casing,
backlight keyboards
and the 15 inch screen
plus the graphics card
make it better than the macbook.

it's like paying for a blackbook but getting an MBP

i too ordered a refurb 2.4 MBP - it will be my first mac since the old IIe the family used to have.

tracking the package says the following though, which is a bit of a worry. but it's not due here (MA) until the 11th, so it's still got time!

Update for those interested:

Got a refurb that kept freezing.

Took it to Partridge Creek Apple Store MI.
Guy didn't even look at it, after I told him it was a refurb he told me to send it back and exchange it.

Called my apple. They told me to send it in for a full refund.

I think I am going to go with the same machine, just get the new one with the education discount its only $50 difference.

Too bad it didn't work out, it was fun having my first macbook while it lasted, now playing the waiting game again.

I bought a 2.5 when they came out a few weeks ago and was just browsing apple.com and actually looked at some of the prices on their refurbished products. I took my 2.5 back (I was still within the two week window) and for $200 less, bought a 17" 2.6 glossy MBP and didn't even pay for the high res version, but that's what they sent me. Everything seems to work so far and Apple is great with their support. I think I'll like this one a bit better...so I got a faster processor, better resolution and bigger (and glossy) screen for less money. Can't beat that.

And whoever said waiting for shipping is killer, you're right. I must have checked that FedEx page about 50 times in two days!

i am a fan of the refurbished store as well.
i bought my SR MBP 2.2 ghz from them.

the only thing i don't like about buying online in general ( refurb or new)
is when it encounters a problem, even if you take it to a local store, you cannot get an exchange from them.
even if you have the 14 days grace period
you have to send it back, and wait for the replacement which is in the fastest FEDEX history.. a week or 9 days.

when i bought the penryn 2.4 today, decided to go local.
got the printer with $100 rebate as well.

I'd think the current refurbished machines are really just repackaged new computers.

Congrats on the purchase BTW!

I also recently purchased a refurb 2.2 mbp and have experienced the "wake from sleep" problems although I believe that to be a software rather than hardware issue. I think way too many people are reporting this for it to be hardware. So all in all I've got a pristine machine that occasionally has issues getting out of bed.

i used to had that problem when i still had the 2.2 refurbished..
the apple care customer svc told me it has something to do with te 10.5.2 graphics update.
i guess that's the reason

Wasn't the 5.2 update suppose to fix that issue?

PS: I'm more inclined to answer to a lady than a dude.

i used to think that as well.
i don't know if the person i'm talking to is just giving me an theory or something.
he asked me to:

1. remove the battery and hold the power button for >10 sec, after that, re-attached the battery again.
2. uninstall the software update.
3. go to a genius bar if all else failed

Hey, great forum for newbs to the mac world!

I was interested in the same config in the refurb section of the apple store, but I was wondering a couple of things:

For the original price, it is listed at 2499. I'm wondering why such a high original cost, if the one currently at the apple store is $500 cheaper, but comes with the same specs, but w/ a larger hard drive (160 v. 200)?
I'm greatful for the cheaper price, but it seems that it would be even more cheaper, if it was listed w/ an original price of $1999.

This will be my first mac, so I'm up against the wall in deciding if I should get brand new black macbook, or shell out a few more bucks, and get the refurbished 15" MBP.

Thanks for all the help in advance!

my 2 cents

p80,

I had the same thoughts and went with a refurb 2.2ghz. The MBP is a lot more computer. Larger screen, aluminum case, graphics card. If those things aren't important save a few bucks and by a refurb MB. Just my 2 cents. I've been very satisfied with my decision. Good luck.

i got my macbook pro 2.4 from apple website (referb) and it was as a brand new, no scratches nothing. just no original box, and still came with 1 year warranty. i think its a best was to save some $. if any one thinking to go for referb one, i think its worth it.. -))))
