Really? Seems to me if one wants an iPhone but cannot deal with the iPhone 4 issues then the 3GS is likely the way to go.

I'm just really bored of that phone, had a 3G before it. It's a solid phone, but I'm having a better experience with my Iphone 4. It feels very advanced, even if it can't make a phone call.

j/k

Well j/k for some....

;)

If I switched I'd want to try something different.

I'm going to be doing the same - although i really really really DONT want to return it. I'm sure there will be a satisfactory fix by then.

It's really a beautiful and incredible phone... but in it's current state I wouldn't be able to actually use it very well and that's a shame.

Everything I've heard points to some sort of fix this week so I'm excited!!!!

+1 Worse case is I go back to my 3GS next week and it truly was a flawless PHONE for the past year. But I will really miss the 4. Such a shame if there isn't a fix this week. I still refuse to believe this is simply just something Apple missed in R&D and QA.

I am going to try to phrase this question in a way that doesn't offend or dismiss the concerns of others. I know there are a lot of very strong opinions and a lot of stone throwing on both sides. I have no desire to get involved in that but I am curious....

I am one that is not bothered by the reception issue since a) I don't normally hold my phone in the way that causes the signal to drop and b) I bought a case the day after I got my phone and I will almost never use my phone without it. So - back to my question - why is this a deal breaker for people? Is it that you live work or travel in poor reception areas and don't want to use a case/bumper? Or is it more a matter of principle - that you don't like the idea of being forced to use a case just to make a phone call with your very expensive phone that you waited in line for xx hours? Nothing wrong with any of those reasons. Hell, I don't care if the only reason you are returning your iPhone is because Steve Jobs' email made you mad. Again, just trying to get a better understanding of how it is affecting others. Maybe I will learn something I wasn't thinking of and decide to return mine!

Initially, I was probably more concerned about the reception issue than others since something changed where I live about six months ago that causes my service to go from 4-5 bars to 0-2 bars. Essentially, I needed an improvent in reception to make my phone usable at home and got that. (I now get about 3-5 bars). Bottom line for me: I love all the new features of my phone and happy that I can now use my cell phone in my house. But I know everyone's situation is different.

Points for the ANH reference in the thread title. ;)

I don't have the phone in my hand yet so it's hard for me to evaluate the antenna issue. But if Apple won't even acknowledge that it's a problem, then they won't be working on a solution and your faith that a fix is right around the corner may be misguided.

LANDO (banging useless iPhone 4 against the wall): They told me they fixed it... I TRUSTED 'EM !!!!

I don't necessarily trust Apple myself, but it's also hard for me to take these reports at face value. I mean, I look at the threads on here--like the scratch-proof test threads for instance--and the users are NUTS. We have everything from "I dragged my phone face-down across a gravel driveway and it is still MINT" to "OMG I touched the screen with a piece of velvet and it SCRATCHED!!!"

(I'm paraphrasing, but those were both actual comments.)

Apparently Apple users have such insanely high expectations that they either lose all touch with reality, or else become obsessed with finding fault. Meanwhile, IS there an actual antenna issue? Maybe, but I'm sure not canceling my order based solely on the hysteria that seems to prevail around here.

Take that for whatever it's worth from someone with three posts. :D

I try to squeeze in a Star Wars reference whenever I can. ;)

It's both.

I live in a high strength area, yet this problem still reduces the amount of signal the phone receives.

I have no intention of using a case with the phone (just a sleeve to put it inside when I'm not using it).

The phone will cost me just over £1200 in two years, so I'm not comfortable with the idea that I'll have to get a terrible looking case to solve this problem (when I've seen conflicting reports about how effective the bumpers actually are).

Day 6 and my phone has been flawless. That is of course unless I sit in my low signal bedroom and try and cover spots on the antenna. lolz

Day 1 I was anxiously awaiting an Apple update (which will come) at this point, I don't even care and am enjoying the hell out of my phone.

Still love posting in this forum though, makes owning a new gadget fun when you can blab about it all day instead of work.

When I started this thread I thought it would only be a matter of days for Apple to come through. I guess I was way off.

Here's to hoping Apple doesn't fail hard tomorrow.

I already returned mine and have had the Htc evo for a week. I rooted it, got free wifi tether and better service at my house and office in Columbus Ohio. I loved my iPhone but frankly I was bored with ios ( I'm typing this on my iPad) and I use my phone for business soothe most important thing is good reception, which I now have.

The evo is not perfect but it serves my needs so much better than either iPhone did.

My phone’s fine, so I’m not too worried about it. It would just be nice for Apple to fix this, so people could start actually enjoying the phone.

I find the OP's use of the word "faith" disturbing. Apple is a corporation, not a religion, right? Right? Anyone?

If Apple doesn't fix this in my return window I will be returning the iPhone. The fatal fall in the iPHone is the PHONE which is what the device is for.

You hear this a lot, the iPhone can't do the one thing it's meant to...be a phone.

Well, no, the iPhone, despite it's name, is by design and intention, less of a phone than a computer and media device. If what you really need is a phone, with some minor web capabilities, a Razr with that ridiculous medianet crap should suffice. But the truth is we don't by the iPhone because we want a phone, most of what we want from it has little to do with the phone part.

So, sure, if you have reception issues, which neither I nor my wife do, it's aggravating for sure, but the often said idea that first and foremost it's a phone, isn't really accurate and just hyperbole. Yes it has a phone component, and it should of course work, but the idea that the iPhone's main purpose is to make calls is just BS.

I am genuinely curious, what are you guys considering as an alternative?

New provider with some Android action, different phone on AT&T?

If they don't fix it (my issues) I will go back to verizon and get a droid x. Will I be as happy with that? Probably not. Will I be able to make calls without issue? Without a doubt. I really hope apple fixes it.

Umm WTF are you talkin about? Talk about hyperbole. Thanks for speaking for most iphone consumers. LOL!

I bout this as a phone first that does it all. I you don need a phone maybe you are pissing your money away and should by an iPod touch. Yes big shocker I know but people actually do buy this to use it as a phone. Anyone that says differently is foolish. There are the cheaper alternatives to purchase that can do the rest.

General Tagge: Any phone made with Android would be a useless gesture, no matter what technical data they've obtained. This phone is now the ultimate power in the universe.

Darth Vader: That is fantastic. Terrific work. So no weaknesses at all?

General Tagge: N... no.

Darth Vader: You, uh, you hesitated there. Is there something I should know?

General Tagge: No, it's virtually perfect, like 99.99%.

Darth Vader: Uh, okay, wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't ask what's the 0.01?

General Tagge: Well, I mean, there's this gap in the band. It was kind of an aesthetic choice by Apple. And if you bridge it with your finger or something, the phone loses reception.

Darth Vader: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! That sounds like a pretty big design flaw, then.

General Tagge: No, no, your little finger is only one centimeter across.

Grand Moff Tarkin: Well, that's no wider than an iPad.

General Tagge: Exactly. And even to get within range of it, you have to hold it in your left hand. It's not a big deal.

Darth Vader: Can't we put a bumper on it, you know, put a case on it or something?

General Tagge: Well, that would look terrible. I mean, we gotta think about resale.

Darth Vader: Resale? What are you talking about? The flawed iPhone 4 is a limited run, the value will only go up!

General Tagge: Lord Vader, your inside references to the eBay iPhone market haven't given you the clairvoyance to turn a profit on that iPhone 3GS. Nor has it... (choke....gag)

Darth Vader: I find your lack of faith disturbing. That iPhone has been jailbroken! Apps from the App Store, apps from Cydia!

General Tagge: (choking) There's nothing worthwhile on Cydia!

Grand Moff Tarkin: Enough of this! Vader, release him!

Darth Vader: As you wish... (releases Tagge)

Darth Vader: All right, so we're going to get that case?

Imperial Officer: Yeah, we can get it tomorrow if price is no object.

Darth Vader: Ehhhh...

Imperial Officer: We'll try AT&T first.

Darth Vader: Try AT&T, yeah, yeah

(stolen from Family Guy who, of course, stole it from George Lucas)

You do not need to see his iPhone.

For me, there's no phone but the iPhone unless Apple creates an alternative by another name. So I'm loyal. That said, I agree with those who are disappointed if not downright ticked by Apple's lame response (to date). This press conference should have happened earlier. It seems forced now.

Had original iPhone and 3GS before i4. The one thing that just pisses me off every single day is the proximity sensor issue. Jobs/Apples lack of response/smartass type of responses just made me really fed up with the whole situation. I am waiting to for the conference tomorrow morning, if they still won't man up and stand behind their product tomorrow. I already have the return label from AT&T and have an appointment with sprint to pick up an evo tomorrow afternoon.

I'd like to stay with apple, because of the ability to sync between with iPad and MBP. But at some point, enough is enough. I went from mostly pc to new iPhone, iPad, MBP in the last 12 months, and I can honestly say I've been so happy and so disappointed by apple in the last 12 months.
