I really wasn't 'waiting' on anything because all the rumors had pointed that the Sandy Bridge MacBook Pros were not coming out until summer, probably in June at WWDC. So I decided to buy mine in early February...turns out they released the new ones much sooner than expected, and caught everyone by surprise. The resale value on my model dropped $1000 in one week.

Yes, the $2499 MacBook Pro I have is now worth about $1200 if I tried to sell it on eBay today. It's sad.

Well the share price has been dropping these past few days, so we may see something tomorrow or thursday. I guess keep your fingers crossed if you're still waiting?

Honestly, the difference in performance between Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge is negligible. The only things that matter in terms of an update are a new body (unlikely), a high res screen (possible, but still not terribly likely just yet), and better graphics. Depending on what you are doing, the graphics may or may not be worth the wait.

I want USB 3.0 - that's what Ivy Bridge is to me. Time machine back-ups take forever on USB 2.0, even when spindle-limited with a conventional HDD. USB 2.0 is terrible for back-ups or large transfers. Thunderbolt was supposed to be the answer to this, but with poor third-party support a year after release, it's still-born. eSATA would be good too, but Apple will never put one of those on a laptop. I want my USB 3.0 port.

At this point, only sensible thing to do is:

1)Buy because you have no other laptop.

OR

2)You found an incredible deal on 2011 model that you wanted..

Everyone else, just WAIT

This is the first and last time I'm ever going to wait for a product again. Wish I hadn't sold my computer so early, really thought Apple would be on the ball and release them when ivy hit.

Oh well at least I know they are coming soon. Take one look at the mac pro forums makes it seem not bad at all over here lol.

I bought myself a new 17" about 6 weeks ago and about 2 or 3 weeks later my wife bought one for her business. I bought them through an online retailer that gave me less than student pricing and deeply discounted applecare. You can almost always find a better deal if you wait, but I don't regret buying either of them.

As for resale, I bought the computer to use it for a few years. I have no interest in resale value. We were going to give our old 13" to my mom, but then my wife hired an assistant and we had to use it for her.

Just keep it clean and fresh and you can always ebay it for minimal loss when the new one comes out.

Everything but the iPad and the iPod touch are on "Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle"

Eek.

Almost everyone knows not to buy right now. Even my Uncle who is not very tech savvy is waiting for a new imac since he looks at the buyers guide before making any purchase.

I bought an Apple Thunderbolt Display last Thursday, damn.

That's the main reason I'm waiting, despite there being some good deals on the Apple Refurb store on late '11 models.

Although I use FW800 for backing up which is a big improvement over USB2 I'm looking at getting 4-5 years out of my next MBP and what will we have then? Multi-terabyte SSDs? FW800 is OK for 10s of GB transfers but not for 100s of GBs or TBs and unless T-Bolt gets widely adopted in the PC world then it's likely to be only "pro" level, i.e. expensive, T-Bolt peripherals that will be available.

Having said that, I'll wait and see what Apple comes up with. If we get much higher spec at the same price point then I'll get a new model but if there's a big price hike then maybe a late '11 refurb and buy into T-Bolt at a later date.

Looking forward to upgrading my 2009 MacBook Pro to IB but am little concerned about the size of SSD and cost options to increase the size. Does anyone know if Intel IB chipset is using new standard to connect to SSD or is it the same standard used today on MacBook Air, for example? I would hate to buy the MBP with small SSD and realise later that I cannot upgrade to a larger SSD.

After seeing early ivy bridge + 4000hd bench's unless you absolutely needed a new computer right now i don't understand why you wouldn't wait.

I think its not just the processor most are concerned about, things like USB3 i really want. Also most of us are just impatient sods with first world problems just wanting to vent lol :)

Thank you for sharing this information. My life is now complete. I will go back to battling my bacterial and viral infections currently and hoping it doesn't complicate into a life-threatening situation.

i am getting a macbook pro tomorrow i have no laptop right now and cant wait for the new ones even if it was end of may or june. i honestly don't think we will see new ones till mountain lion comes out.

I think you're right. Why would Apple develop and test the new MBPs for Lion when they could just go straight to ML and test them. It would save them a bit of money and the release of ML is so close why not wait.

I hate myself for realizing that. :(

I feel ya. I am computer-less right now and have been since January. The wait is getting old but I really can't bring myself to purchasing anything now until I at least see the specs on the new MBPs. All I can do is hope that it will happen before WWDC. Every Tuesday and Thursday for the past few weeks I have just been hoping the store would go down.

NO! NO! NO! You DO NOT know what you're doing! I got tired of waiting too, once. It was just 2 weeks before the release of the next generation MacBook Pro. Never regretted anything more. THAT THING WAS A LOT FASTER THAN THE SLOWPOKE I GOT! That's when I learned to wait for 6 months, at maximum.

----------

I'm staying strong, I can wait one more month! :p

It's probably going out on August. See Buyer's guide.

Is the upgrade only for the MBP 15"?? I need the MBP 13", wondering if the 13 inch model will go through an upgrade as well..

I pretty much made it a reality (in my mind) that i needed it. yeah, i'm lying to myself.. but oh well i can't wait to use this thing! getting really tired of my 2008 mba (1,1)

If you 'need' now, buy. Usually that means spend $ now to make more $ now.

The rest of us, wait. Easiest is to make a game out of it. Guess at a date, get excited for that date... then do it all over again. You'll be right someday. Count how many times you are wrong.

Or, freshen up your current model (if you are lucky enough to have one):

* Clean it all nice.
* Change the desktop wallpaper.
* Install new apps.
* Lock it down (file vault, hidden volumes, TOR).
* Get it working with ipv6 (tunnel broker dot net).
