I switched to a 16 pro from a 14 pro. I took the 16 out of the silicone case, and now I don’t want to put it back on.

For one, the 14 felt like a brick with or without a case, while the 16 feels so light (I know it really isn’t) that you feel the difference when the case is on.

Second, without a case on the edges of the screen are nearly invisible. I don’t know it it’s the thinner bezels, or if the edge of the glass curves down, but it’s like I don’t see the frame. I never got this feeling from the 14, so having the case on made no difference.

The one reason to keep a case is that the silicon makes for a firmer grip. My 14 never slipped out of my hands, but it was always in its case, so perhaps that’s why.
Actually there is another reason, the edges of the case are raised, and protect the screen and cameras from hitting and banging against things.

I’m seriously tempted to keep the 16 out of the case, and I do have applecare. But tell me your horror stories of accidental damage, and the times you wished you had a case. Or tell me how badly not using a case impacts trade in value.
So maybe I will come to my senses and decide it’s safer with the case on.

I have had similar experience, I decided to not use case and put screen protector instead

* Case is protecting more of the back glass/sides (also bit of screen, depending on what you drop it on)
* Screen protector protects the screen better than the case does (and I care more about the screen)

I decided to do the same thing. My 14 pro in a caudabe case with a screen protector feels so bulky and heavy compared to my naked 16 pro.

I’m pretty sure I’m just going to use the 16 pro naked until something catastrophic happens and I panic lol

I have stopped using cases for a couple off years now. I think since I had the X. After that I had the 11 PM, right now the 13 PM and waiting for delivery of the 16 Pro (no Max this time). Never really missed the case, but instead was always happy to see how beautiful the phone actually looks. I know it's a "dangerous" step, but I won't use a case on the 16 either.

My phones have survived several drops from tables or (even more often) out of my pocket on to all kind of solid grounds. They did get scratches, dings and dongs, but I never really cared. It gives them personality, if you know what I mean :D Also they still look so much better without the case. I always buy my phones (so no monthly payment plan or anything) and I never had Apple Care either.

Honestly, if should ever drop the 16 and damage it in a way that makes it unusable, I will have to pay a high price and I will be pxxxxd as fxxk. But life's short and I decided this is something worthy enough to take the risk on. Of course this is only my personal decision and everyone should make their own one according to their personal attitude and (possibly) ability to suffer.

I wish you good luck without the protection of a case.

I didn’t use a case on my 15 Pro Max for 6 months. Never had an issue. Same with my 14 Pro Max, no case for its entire life. I have a couple cases for my 16 Pro Max mostly because I like the colors.

(...)And the 15 Pro still looks like new.
That's one important aspect. Especially if you want to sell the phone at some point in the future. Totally understandable, too. But to me there's one big question about this. What exactly is the point of having a phone looking like new, if you never get to see it, because it's in a case? I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything, but do you see what I mean?

This is why I have never used a case, in addition to the extra bulk and weight a case adds.

AppleCare+ does not cover cosmetic damage to the chassis at all...even if Apple replaces the display/glass back. The first time you drop your iPhone you will instantly regret not having a case on it. You will look at that scuff, blemish, nick, chip every time you use your iPhone and it will live rent free in your head. Perhaps it will be small and hardly noticeable...perhaps not, but you will then ultimately realize you need a case. And you will put one on to hide the embarrassing damage that screams "this clumsy guy abuses his iPhones." And when trade-in time comes, you may/may not get the full amount.

With that all said...there is a compromise. And that is to buy a case and use it for only those times where you would have greater propensity to drop it...Travel, Sporting events, Amusement Parks, Nights on the town, Parties, etc.

iPhones are beautiful things just uglified with cases IMO. Modern iPhones are so tough that one does not need a case. Cases on modern iPhones are simply an affectation for some users; the exception being folks who need to use a battery case.

I beat phones hard (damaged lots of cases in the old days protecting the more fragile earlier iPhones) but the worst that happens with the last few models is the iPhone gets a little rough spot on the edge when it is dropped on to concrete. One can sand the rough spot off with emery paper, if one cares. Obviously it is possible to damage any iPhone (physics), but unlikely today.

I always went without a case until the 15 Pro and now 16 Pro. They are just too slippery and big to comfortably hold.
Started using a minimalistic Pitaka case and will never go back to naked. It barely adds any bulk and becomes way grippier.. And the 15 Pro still looks like new.
My 15 Pro Max and the 14 Pro before it still look like new despite hard usage and no cases. And many of us who keep our phones in a pocket do not want grippier. Burying a beautiful $1000 phone in an ugly $50 case is not something that makes sense to me.

I can’t stand cases as they always end up sticky and I just can’t stand that!

So now I just go case less and have for years and currently 6 months in with my 15 pro and it’s still pretty mint! I’ve dropped it twice once from 3 foot getting out car and once from 4 foot and it hit hard on the plastic door cill of my front door and luckily it’s left no marks!

My biggest issue for damage is micro scratches on front when I forget and put it in same pocket as my
Keys! Although I’ve pretty much avoided it for this phone.

After all it's just an article of daily use, isn't it? I would get tired of worrying about it all the time just to keep it in a mint condition. I'm not even treading my car in such a way. That sort of affection belongs to human beings only (okay, and maybe animals :D )

I don’t use a case either. Just a screen protector. I don’t mind scratches over time to the body of the phone but I don’t want my screen scratched tho.

Well, if you’re paying for AppleCare coverage, why not?
That’s how it was designed and intended to be used , just like no one is supposed to put a case on their laptop

Cases always hide the beauty and premium feel of phones and add a lot of cheap plastic bulk, especially the cheap and ugly ones from brands like Spigen, ESR, etc.
Unless, of course, you do construction work or some other form of manual labor.

I picked out the color I wanted and then got one of Apple's clear cases. Doesn't seem too heavy to me, so in this instance, problem solved.

I use a case. But sometimes it feels crazy that smartphone manufacturers invest so much in materials and design, which is also important to buyers, yet so many people put a case on their phone and never really get to enjoy the beauty of the device.

Actually, a question for those who use cases: if the iPhone used a case-like structure for its outer shell instead of fancy aluminum and titanium, would you still buy it? It wouldn’t be as "bling” but you basically end up with same result.

I have not had a case since the 4 and have had no issues at all. Once they went back to the squarish design for the 12, it made holding the phone caseless a dream. I do have AppleCare though so that's why I never really worried about it.

I did somehow manage to scratch my 15p screen a few weeks after launch day and was bummed but got used to it. I am trying out a screen protector on my 16p but so far, I don't love it. I feel like I have to push on the screen harder to get it to register.

That’s still much better than having to look at a case every time you use your phone. ;)

That's one of the things, I might be a little bummed if in a couple of years the trade-in value was lowered due to wear and tear.
The 14P lived in its case and looked basically brand new.
But day to day, a little nick or scratch wouldn't be on my mind at all.

I actually like the look of the iphone in a silicone case. But when I took the case off, the screen on the 16P gave me a wow moment that I never got with the 14P.
