Same exact situation my friend. Just go for it and keep a case for rough activities or kids using the phone. I have a ZAGG screen protector on mine and an Apple silicone case for situational use. Let go of the worries

I switched to a 16 pro from a 14 pro. I took the 16 out of the silicone case, and now I don’t want to put it back on.

For one, the 14 felt like a brick with or without a case, while the 16 feels so light (I know it really isn’t) that you feel the difference when the case is on.

Second, without a case on the edges of the screen are nearly invisible. I don’t know it it’s the thinner bezels, or if the edge of the glass curves down, but it’s like I don’t see the frame. I never got this feeling from the 14, so having the case on made no difference.

The one reason to keep a case is that the silicon makes for a firmer grip. My 14 never slipped out of my hands, but it was always in its case, so perhaps that’s why.
Actually there is another reason, the edges of the case are raised, and protect the screen and cameras from hitting and banging against things.

I’m seriously tempted to keep the 16 out of the case, and I do have applecare. But tell me your horror stories of accidental damage, and the times you wished you had a case. Or tell me how badly not using a case impacts trade in value.
So maybe I will come to my senses and decide it’s safer with the case on.

Ive spent a lifetime with cases but something changed me.

I NEVER drop my phone and I am bemused as to how people mange it frankly.

I also never trust any Apple marketing when it comes to the strength of the glass. I recall a few years back the ads Apple showed with the 1st iteration of Ceramic Shield with a phone flying round in a handbag with keys etc.
This DOES NOT work!! the Ceramic Shield still scratches relatively easily. Ive seen it many times.
Ive no idea how the 16's '50% stronger' screen would work but it's not worth the risk. Always get a screen protector

BUT

The rest of the phone, particularly the pro with the titanium case is remarkably resilient. It really is. It takes a leap of faith when you are so used to protecting it but really beyond a screen protector you just dont need a case.

My compromise is to buy the ARC Pulse 'case'. I have this on my pro max and it looks good and gives me some drop protection even though I dont really feel I need it but the rest of the phone I get to use and experience as Apple intended.

Its the last time im buying a case.

People who say their phone is ‘literally perfect/as new’ after two years without a case/screen protector are just more tolerant of microscratches/blemishes.

Which is fine, of course - everyone is different. Of course the case is a compromise - they look so beautiful without one. But for some people the constant low-level anxiety of being caseless just isn’t worth it. Which is also fine.

It’s your phone, and it’s your choice.

I use the case mainly for protecting the camera lenses.

What I've been searching for is a current version of Apple's old bumper 'case'.

AppleCare+ does not cover cosmetic damage to the chassis at all...even if Apple replaces the display/glass back. The first time you drop your iPhone you will instantly regret not having a case on it. You will look at that scuff, blemish, nick, chip every time you use your iPhone and it will live rent free in your head. Perhaps it will be small and hardly noticeable...perhaps not, but you will then ultimately realize you need a case. And you will put one on to hide the embarrassing damage that screams "this clumsy guy abuses his iPhones." And when trade-in time comes, you may/may not get the full amount.

With that all said...there is a compromise. And that is to buy a case and use it for only those times where you would have greater propensity to drop it...Travel, Sporting events, Amusement Parks, Nights on the town, Parties, etc.
True, but, with the case you never get to look at the chassis at all.

My 15 Pro Max and the 14 Pro before it still look like new despite hard usage and no cases. And many of us who keep our phones in a pocket do not want grippier. Burying a beautiful $1000 phone in an ugly $50 case is not something that makes sense to me.
And ruining a 1000 phone by being irresponsible and not using a case makes no sense to me! It’s CHEAP insurance! Just don’t use your phone w case Special occasions….

I haven’t used a case or screen protector in quite a few years, and I’ve never paid a penny for AppleCare+ or any other optional warranty. I’ve had to fix/replace 3 phones, my 4S, my X, and my 14 Pro. The 4S was slung off a desk by its charging cable at high speed and landed face-first on an angled solid metal planter leg—weird fluke and neither my case nor my screen protector saved it from needing a screen replacement. My X was naked and I voluntarily decided to test Apple’s water resistance claims with a brief dip in shallow water, but that failed in spectacular fashion (lots of fun colors and lines all over the screen before completely dying). The 14 Pro was naked in my hand during a hike and I slipped on a rock and fell backwards and the phone caught about half my body weight face down on another rock and no case or screen protector could have possibly saved it. Incredibly it still functioned fine, other than the screen being totally shattered to bits and needing replacement.

In terms of scratches, since going naked I’ve typically had one or two little hairline blemishes show up that I only notice when the screen is off. However since at least my 14 Pro (maybe since Ceramic Shield?) all of my screens have actually remained flawless. I do keep my phone alone in my front left pocket and am pretty careful with it in general. My 15 Pro was especially amazing at resisting damage. It survived some nasty falls onto concrete and the titanium frame barely even got scuffed at the corners. I will say, NEVER lay it face down! I keep it on its back with a leather MagSafe wallet.

In a transparent silicone case the phone looks just as good as without the case and is protected.

Dropped my 15 pro max off my lap, not sure why it was there, getting up front my desk at home one day. Landed on vynl tile. Broke the back of the phone. About a 2.5’ fall or so

1) Do user created cosmetic blemishes bother you?
2) Do you have Apple Care+? If so, are you willing to assume the risk of shattering your phone and having to wait on a replacement?
3) If you don’t have Apple Care+, are you willing to assume the inherent financial risk of a very costly repair should you have an accident with your phone?

You know yourself better than people on the forum. You shouldn’t need validation on this matter.

That's true. My point with the original post was to explain why this time I'm thinking about ditching the case, and then to get a poll of how bad accidents get when you don't have one to get an idea of the risk.

If I had the money I wouldn't use a case either. I mean Samsung gave out 1 extra year of Care+ when I pre-ordered my Flip 6 and I still got a case. I would reconsider if I didn't have to pay the $200 deductible.

This is why I only use my phones naked when I'm at home.

None of my family and friends do what I do. Why? They can't be bothered.

Not only it feels good in the hands (ladies, you know the procedures @flossy) but it gives me the time to clean my phone and cases.

Trust me a few learned those who never cleaned their phones, keeping them cased from day one actually damaged it.

I have been thinking of going caseless. What holds me back is not protecting my phone, but protecting my wood floors at home. If I accidentally drop a titanium phone on my wood floor from say 4 feet, it will likely leave a blemish wouldn't it? The TPU edges of the case protect the floor from the phone.

What do the caseless people think of that?

Dropping your phone is based on luck. I just remembered my hTc EVO 3D and Samsung S7 edge fell chess high but landed on the display. No issues both naked.

I dropped my Huawei P30 Pro from top of my Civic, was watching NFL and the display cracked. It had a case and tempered glass.

I took the 16 out of the silicone case, and now I don’t want to put it back on.
I've purchased every flagship iPhone since the original (upgrade annually). I've never used a case on any of them. I follow a few simple rules to keep the phone in pristine condition.
  • Dedicated pocket for the phone (front left). Only my phone and my hand go in that pocket, nothing else, ever.
  • I never set it on hard surfaces.
  • I don't drop it. This isn't an unreasonable flex or anything... I just have a different mindset when I pull my phone out of my pocket, especially in a 'risky' situation (lots of people around; awkward position; etc) and hold it in a consciously more secure fashion.
Those rules are a pain in the ass, and not everyone will place the same value of keeping a phone case-less that I do (which I totally understand, haha), but I do the above and have always been happy.

I’m seriously tempted to keep the 16 out of the case, and I do have applecare. But tell me your horror stories of accidental damage, and the times you wished you had a case.
I've only damaged two of my phones. My 3GS (about 2 weeks before the 4 came out) and my 11 (12?) Pro Max. The 3GS went into the laundry. Oops. The 11/12 (whichever, I don't recall) slipped out of my pocket while working on a skylight at the very highest point of the angled roof of that was over three stories above the ground -- it slid down the roof, accelerated quickly, and shot off the end like a pro snowboarder, flew down over three stories, and slammed onto a wrought iron fence that was actually below the lowest level of the lowest floor (house is on a slope). That thing was moving like a bullet when it finally hit.

A case wouldn't have prevented damage in either situation.

Or tell me how badly not using a case impacts trade in value.
If you take care of it, zero.

I use Apple case as an expensive invisible case with a 99 deductible of anything happens. I enjoy my phone to the fullest naked every year , upgrade every year and trade in my phone to Apple. They don’t care about dings , scuffs or anything like that , longest your phone isn’t cracked you’ll get maximum trade value for you device of you are concerned about value.

issue is the phones are just too damn slippery for me to use without a case even with apple care. they easily slide out work trousers and just holding on sofa it's not secure. in winter time it's even worse for that.

If you are caseless how do you protect your wood floor from your heavy metal phone?
How soft are your wood floors? We have wood floors and I dropped my iPad on it with no damage to either. Wood floors are going to get dings from dropped knives, pets, and other things like tripods (ask me how I know that one). It's just the nature of the beast.
