One of them was destroyed while I was sleep when, in my sleep, I knocked over a bottle of doctor pepper onto the phone.

One was destroyed by a glass of V-8 juice when I accidentally dropped the phone in it.

One was destroyed when I put in a pocket that had filled with water while riding down Interstate 376 on my motorcycle in the rain.
One would argue that for the incidents you mention with water damage a case wouldn’t have helped anyway. You seem very unlucky with this, wish you good luck for the future 🤞

I have a drawer of five or six destroyed phones that says otherwise.

The rest were dropped one too many times.

Every instance, the phone was just out of the purchased Apple Car when it happened.

This is the first year I replaced a phone that wasn't because I destroyed the one I had (or my wife did). It's like some freakin' miracle.
These must be very old phones, as phones now are practically waterproof. You can drop it to the bottom of a swimming pool and it’ll still be perfectly fine.

And how do you have so many destroyed phones if you’re so adamant about using a case? Do you play baseball with them or something?

There are waterproof and water resistant cases. But I was not making a case that a case would help. I was refuting the point that it's virtually impossible to damage a phone. Its very, very easy.

They were an iPhone 5s, 6s, XS, Xr x 2, and an SE.

Cases are not a panacea. I broke my back glass on the XS when it fell off the toilet paper dispenser, maybe two feet, on to the bathroom floor. It was in $100 case. I think that's how the Dr Pepper ended up getting in it and finishing it off.

The 6s is the one that got destroyed by v8 juice. That was a weird incident too. I kept it in one of those Lifeproof cases. For some stupid reason, I took it out of the case at the restaurant and promptly dropped it in the glass of V-8. Weirdest thing ever.

The 5s is the one that went in the water filled pocket. That one was not in a case.

As for my wife's phones, you'd have to ask her. But she tends to go for pretty cases rather than protective ones.

I prefer a case on my iPhone as it adds better grip and offers the protection I need. I have already dropped my 16 Pro Max twice since I've had it and both have been on hard tiled floors. I can't see the benefit of not having a case and that is something nobody has ever been able to explain to me.

Nobody should!

Each to their own.

From my perspective nobody has ever been able to explain to me how its possible to drop a brand new £1200+ phone on a tiled floor :)

To anyone who routinely drops their phone, a case is an essential thing. Of course many out there see their phone as a tool and don't really care about scratches and dings but I cant relate to that id always keep my phone in good condition.

Ive never dropped my phone. ever. Some say thats a lie but I promise you it's true. How? Do I have magical powers? Am I a rubbish member of the X-Men whose mutant power is to keep hold of something in my hand without dropping it? Maybe. What I do know is that when handing my phone I give it the appropriate amount of care given its value and therefore would never drop it.
As an adult with average human motor skills I am quite confident holding and using my phone without the thought or worry of dropping it in the same way if you handed me a Vase or a Glass that I am 100% confident I won't suddenly drop it on the floor.

Your point is valid, and we all have a personal choice here. Just to add one example on why going caseless can have a point, now when heat is discussed again after the 16 series release; e.g. a case (most of them) does insulate and slow down overall heat dissipation. You might have a user case where you want to avoid too much heat which also ”damages” the phone/battery.

That may be an issue in hotter countries for sure, not so much in the United Kingdom where I live where a hot day in our summer is around 26 celsius. The only time I have experienced my iPhone feeling warm was on a wireless charger, but I stopped using those about 4 years ago.

Reminds me of the time....

I was driving my scooter from Alaska around the continent and back to Alaska.

By the time I got to Georgia, I already been to Mexico and Southernmost Point in Florida. It was a LONG push to get from where I was in Florida to my friend's place in Georgia.

By the time I got there, I had been riding for 15 hours or so and I was BURNT. I was barely conscious. All I wanted to do was sleep like a dead statue. But he wanted to give me the house tour.

So there I was, barely conscious, hardly able to speak my own name, and he shows me this piece of pottery that he was very proud off. Told me all about it and how it had won some award, blah blah blah. Then he invited me to hold it so that I could get a better look.

I tried to decline. Multiple times. But he insisted, and practically forced it into my hands. Of course, as you may have guessed, I dropped it and it broke into what must have been three billion little pieces.

Nobody said a word. We just looked at it. For what seemed like an eternity. I was so tired and sleepy, I couldn't even feel bad about it.

Finally, he said, "let me show you to your room".

That kind of thing can happen with phones too.

Almost 2 weeks in and I still have no desire for a case or screen protector. Phone feels nice in the hand, especially with the new metal finish.

AppleCare+ on standby in case I get into a horrific accident or something.

You probably would call roadside assistance and wait hours on the side of the road for them to come and change your tire too.

Some of us will just spend the 10-15 minutes it takes to change a tire and be back on the road.

Wow, right out the gate with the bold assumption!

I have no problem changing a tire, just like I have no problem being without a phone for a few hours / a day or two. It's a phone, it's not that serious.
