The stories that I see on this forum about dirt etc. trapping inside 3rd party cases scratching phones has made me use only Apple cases.

I have both the Apple leather and Apple clear case. I prefer the clear case despite the weird a$$ back magsafe design because it is so darn clear and makes my Pacific Blue shine. Yes, i am superficial.

I’ve always used 3rd party cases for all of my iPhones, and never had any issues with dirt and debris scratching my phone. I also can’t justify paying $49-$50 for a case that I would keep switching out for another case because I would get bored of it. For the 12 Pro Max, I did order a silicon case that I sent back the same day I received it because so many people said it’s a lint magnetic. I found a case I like better than the Apple silicon case. It feels almost exactly the same as the Apple silicon case except it’s thinner which is exactly what I was looking for.

Cheap hard plastic cases are renown, Spigen too, my daughter uses this one, took her 7 out the other day scratched and marked all over the back, even lines across top and bottom from the case.
It's near 2 year old anyway but.

Better stick to Apples or soft like the Caudabe Sheath OP.

That tiny nick is funny. Sooner or later the anodizing is going to get scratched. So what. There's more to come.

Yep, same. A small dot of bare aluminum on the bottom for no apparent reason. Didn’t get dropped, didn’t come into contact with any hard materials. It’s the price you for pay for going caseless, and I don’t regret that decision one bit. As a 12 mini owner, I treasure every gram and millimeter saved.

Depends how it’s treated. The anodised finish has never been chipped inside a case on any of my iPhones. The space grey 8+ I sold the other week was immaculate.

That’s what’s confounding to me. Nothing had happened to my phone at all... it hasn’t been treated poorly and I haven’t had this problem with any of my previous phones.

My experience with cases has been the same, they mark the metal over time so I decided not to bother with a case anymore. I now enjoy using the phone in all its glory. If I drop it, I always have AppleCare+. I eventually trade my phones in and a bit of cosmetic wear doesn't affect the value.

I hope you don’t get any scratches, if it worries you. But I’ve used 3rd Party and official Apple Leather and Silicon cases for the best part of a decade. The Apple cases are not immune from the same potential scratching, in my experience at least.

When I am using a case (I don’t in the warmer months) I take it off once every week or two for a clean. I’ve found debris in the Apple cases just as much as I have from a good quality 3rd party case.

Needless to say, it depends a lot on your use and especially environment. If I’ve not been anywhere where there’s a chance of high particulate concentration in the air, I find little to no dust. Whereas if I’ve been somewhere where there is, or somewhere sandy, there’s usually some contamination to any case I’m using - though I clean them out the same day if I’m anywhere like that.

Indeed and there are a lot of third party cases out there that are much better than Apples own effort in terms of design, aesthetics and quality in my experience. Dust can get inside any case and depends on what the user has in their pocket .

Exactly, indeed the only ones I’ve ever encountered which are as immune to it as possible. Are the completely sealed cases.

For instance, my father-in-law, who, when he’s not teaching in college, has his own business as a mechanic (keeps him occupied). However, he has broken the Lightning port on every iPhone he has owned, due to debris getting in there. - Sorry, as far as he’s concerned, they just break on their own, for no reason whatsoever...... Yeahhhhhhhh. Funny, my dad has the same excuse for everything I ever have to do for him, magic pixies must come in the night and knacker everything

Anyway, for part of his Christmas this year, we’ve bought him an iPhone case, which is as close to bomb proof as possible. No permanent openings, everything sealed, it can even be used underwater. If that doesn’t stop the mysterious Lighting port failures, nothing will.

Have you had scratches on your iPhone while using the Apple cases?

I, too, have used many cases (often to my wife’s amazement!). Apple cases have tighter fit esp around the sides of the phone. The Apple cases are tight, esp around the button areas, where most 3rd party cases are just floppy rubber.

Dust gets in...but stays mostly to the top of the edge of Apple case. Yes, over time, you have dust inside the case but much less than, say, an Otterbox, Spigen, etc..

Of course, the sealed cases work the best but often times, destroys the functionality of the phone and has horrible aesthetics.

With Apple cases, the limited dusting has been around the exposed part of the case. I have never really had a problem with debris and the middle part of the case. Before switching to the Apple leather sleeve, I did make a habit of removing the phone every 1 - 2 weeks to wipe the phone down and make sure there was no actual particular matter in between the phone and case.

I think this type of matte anodizing aluminum does have a certain propensity of chipping. It's just the way it is in a sense, imo as I've seen the wear and tear on various devices.

I have experienced some small surface scratches in the past, even with Apple cases. But in fairness, that’s not the fault of the case, Apple or otherwise. It would be me, not getting it cleaned out quick enough.
It doesn’t bother me if it happens though.

As for the huge, bulky, sealed case. The last thing my father-in-law cares about, is the aesthetic of his phone. Hell, until I donated one of mine a few years ago, he was still using an ancient dumb phone. It’s a tool to him, nothing more, nothing less.

At the end of the day, there is no ‘Apple magic’ when it comes to cases. Anyone can grab a micrometer and manufacture a perfectly fitting case.
However, every Apple case I have owned, has obviously been well made, to exacting standards. Of that, there is no argument.

That said, I have had cases in the past which match, and in some (ahem) cases, exceed Apple’s own. But you have to pay for them, at least as much as you do for an Apple case, sometimes more.
The ‘budget’ ranges, while often very good for the price, rarely if ever, match up to the more expensive cases.

In my experience of buying far more cases than anyone probably should at least. Especially if you ask the wife :D

No, the white iPhones with silver aluminum or stainless have no anodizing or coatings.
The more reasons for me to pickup the white one against the black 🙂

True, been avoiding black anodized phones, apple watches, mechanical watches, etc.
I even choose silver for my car most of the time. Looks better against wear and tear.

Sometimes the colour finish hasn't bonded fully in some places and I've seen this issue before.

That’s not true for the aluminum. All silver Alu products from apple are anodized with a transparent layer.

Thats why u can’t polish scratches out

The silver aluminum is not anodized or DLC coated.
