I can't imagine what would cause this that couldn't be fixed by a reset.
It is the center of our home theater and we stream everything through ours.

That said, I am considering an upgrade as the current one seems to have developed issues with HDR content.

Didn't happen when rumored in April , so either an announcement at WWDC, or Fall. I'm ready for an upgrade as one of mine is getting slow, hanging occasionally.
What are you running on it that could be pushing the hardware. The Apple TV hardware is much faster than any other the other TV boxes out there. My Roku box lags now and then due to hardware but it’s hard to see that the ATV would. Maybe a restart/reset would clear that up?

What the ATV could use is a rethink of the software.

I have all three AppleTV 4k versions running in my home, they all work just like they did out of the box.
Assuming the internet is functioning optimally, of course.

It's one of my Apple tvs (not all) - an original one from 2017 that hangs on good wifi connection & into 3 year old LG OLED. Sound out to OG homepods. Latest OS. I'll have to get a "new" one to replace that one if not announced at conference. Lots of restarts...

Agree with Tagbert that you should try a reset to fix the wifi issue. The 1st 4K ATV was no slouch and the only reason I upgraded later was so we could do FaceTime calls on the TV with family. Regardless, you can always find a use for a 2nd ATV if you have more than one screen in the house. :)

Sounds like you might have hardware problems with that unit, then. I can see wanting to hold out to see if there are actual substantial changes in this next model, but it would probably be for additional features, not because the current model is under performing. Good luck.

In my experience, HomePods (especially the OG ones) are notorious bandwidth hogs and can bring out problems with WiFi that you would not encounter under any other circumstances--particularly if you are setting the HPs to be default audio for the Apple TV.

I have a pair of OG HPs set as default audio for my ATV 4K (I think at the time it was a Gen 2 version) and, if memory serves, I kept getting timeouts and other issues \. I worked for months with my ISP, swapping out routers and eventually even swapping out the ONT itself but we couldn't solve the problem. In the end, we swapped out the ONT a second time, using a different brand, and that made things much better. In the end, I found a way to run Ethernet cable to the ATV and I've not had a problem since. (At the time I had symmetrical 500 MB up and down service coming to my ONT--and being reliably delivered.

Long story the moral of which is that the problem might be how much bandwidth your OG HomePods are sucking down and, in the process, potentially unmasking other network issues not otherwise evident. Perhaps if you
1. try to find a way to connect your ATV to your network using Ethernet and
2. try using the ATV without sending audio to the OG HomePods
you might find the ATV works better, demonstrating that the problem is not the ATV itself but network issues.

I'm having some issues with my Apple TV HD, it's quite slow. Not sure if this has to do bc it still has the A8 chip, or bc I'm using the Apple TV HD on a 4K tv.

Actually planning on buying the Apple TV 4K this week, but I would like to know if anyone of you guys can tell me if I will notice a huge performance improvement, or if it's better just to wait for the next Apple TV.

I'm hoping they announce them around the time they do a back to school refresh, I want to pick one up but not at when the current model is going on 2 years old and they seem to be on a 2 year refresh cycle.

I know sometimes they start pre-announcing secondary products right before the conference so I’m hoping to hear next week about a new Apple TV. If not, I’ll go ahead and pick up the newest model.

Try rebooting or better yet ethernet connection versus wifi. Wifi will always be slower and subject to interference from other wifi networks, microwaves, etc.

All of my TV's, AppleTVs, Denon speakers and other devices are all ethernet connected.

I’ve said this a few times on another thread but the only way for Apple to break into the mainstream living room and bedrooms is for a Pro & SE versions alongside a regular Apple TV 4K Box.

All with Apple Intelligence capable chips be it 17 Pro, A18 or M Series

A Special Edition HDMI Stick with A17Pro or A18 & 64/128gb

Regular 4K Box with A18 or A18 Pro & around 256gb/512gb

Pro box with the A19 or an M-Series chip and about 1tb/2tb

All need to play AAA games to some degree. And be all compatible with each other around the home

Ditch the WiFi only and have the Pro in a different colour.
Could Use 3 different shades of black?

I’d order a Box & 3 sticks without hesitation.

Eh, the rest wouldn't interest me but a stick for traveling would.

I think the issue with that is that Apple would need to produce 3 models. I agree that a shake up of the line is likely needed. I'm thinking siilar to you

A streaming stick for people that just want to use it as a streamer - no/minimal gaming, no AI - A16 chip/64 GB - $79
A standard "home hub" model that resembles the current unit, but has the Thread Border router in all models and can be the HomeKit and AI hub (i.e. cheap HomePod Minis can run AI requests on the Apple TV) - A18 chip 64/128 GB - $129
A Gaming model which can run modern games at Switch 2-like image quality - likely binned M4Pro or M5 chip (depending on GPU performance), 256/512GB - $499

No new hardware announcement today at WWDC, so it will be fall at the earliest probably October/ November. I bought a few weeks ago a third generation 4K. Guess I’ll hang onto it….

Apple isn’t announcing a new Apple TV at an event. It could literally be any day between now and the end of year. They will put out a small press release and update the store.

Apple has the chicken and egg problem with gaming, except they keep resetting the clock with all of their architecture updates.

I think $500 is too high, and they would need to sell it as a loss leader, to ever capture marketshare from the Switch/Xbox/PS crowd. Consider you can pick up an OLED switch 1 with Ethernet dock for $200 right now, and even $400 may be too high. It's the lack of games that is the problem, not the hardware.

Serious question: what do you expect or what do you want to see in terms of evolution of the AppleTV device? I have several variants of the 4K devices, and, frankly, they do all that I expect them to do.

I would be interested in hearing what y'all think the next evolution of the device looks like.
