My original response already address this issue too! *Don’t get a computer without DVD drive OR get a USB DVD Drive*. You have a choice! Problem solved too! You are here to look for argument.

It's annoying tech companies are shunning these older technologies so soon. I live in an area where the internet is literally diabolical and isn't going to get better anytime soon (since BT pretty much told us so). We rely on physical formats, streaming is not a viable option yet. It can take up to ten minutes to load a YouTube video.

I can appreciate, for the majority, streaming is fine. But there are also many places in the world where it really isn't. It's slow, expensive and just a pain in the arse when compared to just popping a DVD in the tray. These people who tell DVD users to 'get real' or whatever need to try streaming on our connections for a day and they'll see why physical formats are still the preferred option.

Not denying people need DVD or BR but you can (1) RIP it (2) get a computer with DVD drive (3) use an USB DVD drive (4) streaming. Why are you just pinpointing an option that doesn’t work for you when there are other options can get this ‘problem’ solved?

I agree. Also to note that not all movies are available in streaming format nor iTunes.
Who says you are require to stream? Like I mentioned earlier, you’ve got other options.

I'm glad Apple doesn't listen to people like you. This is nothing against you personally, but people like you hold back the ever fast pacing progress of computers and technology. There are usb disc drives and whatnot that will suit your needs just fine. The cd drive has been dead for many years, and is a complete waste of space in such a small form factor.

People said the same with floppy discs.

and fair enough, not all people want to have 1000 dvds fit the size of a fingernail (for reasons i do not understand) but you must look at this rationally, theres really no use for the dvd drive anymore for the average person.

Apple didn't kill it to be aholes, they did it because there are better alternatives, and the 20% space it took in a laptop chassis could be used WAY more efficiently for an extra harddrive / better battery, better specs etc.

Apple killed the internal SuperDrive to push ITunes content business 101, controlling hardware, software and media adds up to greater revenue streams...

Who can blame them as it`s Apple`s position to deliver to the stockholder. At the time Apple was just smarter than the rest being one of the first to deliver digital content. As for the alternatives they only work if they work for the individual, for some physical media is clearly still a preference, nor is that a particular issue.

I totally agree with you, but watch the whole internet kick off when Apple drops the 3.5mm headphone jack on the iPhone.

In reality 3.5mm jacks are ancient technology (it's 6.5mm big brother dates from 1878!!!) and probably deserve to go the same way as DVDs.

Okay. My Sprint phone from 1999 lacked a headphone jack, so I guess we will be going back in time.

All discussion about the benefit of optical drives with CD, the DVD format is useless - the quality of awful.

I shudder at the thought of somebody buying a 5K iMac then sticking a standard definition DVD in a superdrive: low-res-city.

People knocking 3.5mm tech are making moot points - Apple removed the drive because it's inclusion was proving less and less necessary and digital alternatives offered similar quality.

Removing 3.5 jacks is stupid because they're both necessary to most users and for compatibility reasons, design-wise the component takes up significantly less of the total unit than an optical drive would in a laptop and bluetooth alternatives offer inferior sound quality. We're not ready to make the jump

Well it looks like you're going to have to deal with it. The early case pics coming through are giving the impression it's gone.

Which is an incredibly stupid decision on their part. Even the nicest most expensive pairs of audiophile headphones still use jacks like that (and bigger ones, by default). I don't understand why Apple thinks they're being "revolutionary" with this.

Let us assume these early pics are correct and the 3.5mm socket is being dropped (otherwise everything is moot).

It's exactly the same situation as when Apple first dropped other old technologies. Everybody jumps up and down, stamps their feet and cries that the world is going to end. A couple of years later everyone is over it and has moved on. It happens every single time and it will happen this time too.

It's the same as seen in this thread, the vast majority of posters are now over the dropping of the DVD drive and the remainder will get over it very soon.

The reason why 'audiophile headphones' use jacks is because there is no other option. Apple thinks (and I tend to agree) the 3.5mm socket is no longer the best overall option for today's use. I don't consider lightning headphones the perfect solution, in fact I see a massive problem. How are they going to become a standard when only used by Apple? Will USB-C become the new headphone socket standard? But manufacturers will produce lightning enabled headphones because of the huge market size, and for everyone else there will be an adapter.

Yeah except that happens when people actually stop using something. Do you know how many people use 3.5" headphones? Practically everyone who uses headphones. This isn't some old obsolete technology that no one uses anymore. It's very much vibrant and it doesn't make any sense to drop it now. Personally I listen to audio through a DAC and amp, which will always have whatever jacks nice headphones have (since I use nice headphones), so I really couldn't care less about what the iPhone uses for me, but for other people it seems silly.

It's an older technology that WORKS. Anyone who's into good sound at all will tell you that it's the best way to hear the best sound.

I'm just saying that is not a fair comparison. It's one thing to drop a DVD drive when most people can get music or movies another way. It's not one thing to drop a headphone jack that nearly everyone uses.

Neither do I. When I go the gym the machines there also use the 3.5 headphone jack.

Anyone that is obsessed with audio is not listening to music on their iPhone. The 3.5mm jack no longer fits Apple's vision for portable audio on a mobile device and I don't blame them.

I have all sorts of laptops, desktops, speakers, games consoles, video streaming devices, TVs, DVRs and NAS hooked up all over my house. Not a single one is connected via a 3.5mm or 6.5mm jack. The only time I use 3.5mm is headphones on my iPhone and if that's changed to lightning it's not going to make one iota of difference to me (excluding the potential cost of an adapter).

When was the last time you went to a gym to exercise? Ever notice that all the treadmills all use the 3.5 headphone jack?

Who cares? Use 3.5mm headphones at the gym, if you want to use them with an iPhone use an adapter. Meanwhile Apple gets to take advantage of dropping the port.

If this does happen as time goes on more and more devices (including treadmills) will be released for use with lightning headphones. This is just simple economics and it's because of Apple's huge market size.

And some people will still be posting messages crying about how Apple dropped the DVD drive. Some people move on, some get stuck in the past.

This is nothing to do with the DVD drive. If you have noticed many still want the headphone port, and we do not even know if this is all rumor or not. How many times has Mac Rumors been wrong in the past 10 years?

All I know for sure is that ten years from now you'll still be posting exactly the same thing... moaning about DVD drives. You have managed to keep this thread on life support this long so far.

that and 3.5mm jack is alive and well in video and/or audio. Do video myself. have spent a few dollars on devices that support 3.5mm jack. External recorders/monitor, 3.5 preamp (to kill hiss from ACG, basically your device not hearing sound thinks it missing something and boosts the gains way too high), the DSLR I use to shoot video.

Kind of a hard sell to say wired is dead when every piece of video gear in vdslr and even beyond I know of supports it. Wired being either 3.5 or XLR. At some point even wireless mic systems have the component that plugs with a duh duh duh....wire.

because of this system I run nice studio monitors 3.5 based. used on the site shoot on the gear, used in the video editing on the MBP. Keeps some consistency to the process.

relation to apple....MP and MBP video editing is an area where apple still has a viable Apple only aspect in the professional application realm. FCP is a liked program by many, only runs on Mac OS. 3.5 support kind of nice to go with this. I like my consistency as mentioned with my monitors.

Yes, the consumer just has to 'deal with' a company's design decision - Apple isn't entitled to our money, there's a fine line between encouraging consumers to adopt new technologies, and forcing them to.

It won't be totally gone. Apple will sell a dongle with a 3.5mm jack on one end, and it'll cost something like $49.99, but we'll be able to buy compatible ones from places like Monoprice for $4.99.

Apple loves selling dongles.
