Apple has sold machines without optical drives for 5 years. And physical media is dying anyway, while streaming is exploding and has been for years now, but am not sure why you are mixing the discussion of physical media on computers with that on TVs?
[doublepost=1457091024][/doublepost]
Never, I don't even know what stores those are.

But you do know that things go on sale when they can't sell them at regular prices? Most stuff people want to see is on streaming services, which is MUCH cheaper than stockpiling DVDs, and MUCH more convenient. So yeah, get real.

To REALLY appreciate Apple, lend your iMac to a struggling graphic design stuent for a year, and try to survive using Windows PCs There is a logic and sense about iMacs that relly works for me - eg saving to a folder on desktop is SOOO simple, logical and effective. Also it is easy to contact real people for real help. i never managed that even once with Windows, especially Windows 10

BUT I do agree with the 'religion' quote. There is a tiny number of Apple fanatics who rush around like the proverbial junk yard dogs or the Keepers of the Holy Grail, if anyone dares say a word of criticism of some aspect. They are invariably responded to by the vast majority of balanced grown up Apple owners. What the hotheads need to learn is that there are users with defective eyesight, newcomers, switchers from Windows, all finding their way around. For myself, I personally worked on and even ran large computer installtions but teeny weeny PCs sometimes give me greater difficulties than the big stuff ever did. Which is why I rejoice at being able to ask perhaps stupid questions on the Forums and get mostly sincere professional responses. So there !!1

Love how you just ignore what people replied and bring out more of your 'issue'.

Your so call 'issue' isn't really a issue because there are solution to it but it's just that YOU refuse to acknowledge it. Or maybe you refuse to accept new things.

Now...back to your so call 'issue'... many modern cars have Bluetooth sync or a 3.5mm jack to plug into your MP3 player. If you have an older car then you have the options to mod your car's stereo system. Ever heard of FM transmitter or a Bluetooth that plugs into the cig? If you have an even older car then there is a cassette tape that links to a 3.5mm jack so you can plug it into your MP3 player.

If you refuse to evolve with the latest technology then don't whine or complain. You sound like an old person keep saying how they love cassette tape and don't understand the whole CD thingy.

I have a modern player and use Bluetooth all the time with my iPhone. However when I receive a CD from a ministry its 500 times easier to carry it to my car and play it on my CD player over converting it with iTunes to a MP3 file and transferring to my iPhone. For one I only have a 500GB hard drive and for two I don't always have the time, nor do I want every single CD I receive on my computer.

This thread seems to be diverting away from the original topic.

Discs are old tech and an integrated optical drive in a laptop doesn't make sense in 2016.

However just like with cassette tapes and vinyl, there are people who will continue to use them.

That's who the non-retina mbp is for.

I think this was already established on the first page of this topic.

We talked about this back in 2008 when the Air came out, again in 2012 with the Retina MacBook Pro came out...

I don't desire the fires of Hell

I won't get into an argument about this. Keep your outdated media and outdated beliefs, I think we're all done here.

I mostly use MP3 and digital movies but sometimes will I use CD/DVD. For example I have all 3 seasons of Trek Original series on DVD.

My sister up until last year use to play CDs in her car still. She would go on vacation and have a bag with just CDs, and it took up so much room (wasn't a small bag).

I gave her my old iPhone 5, helper her with music and iTunes, and no more CDs. She's thrilled about it.

I've said this before on here, I got a $100 Alpine radio for my car just to have Bluetooth and it's great! No more wires, no more CDs (getting scratched or broken), and it's great. Heck, my 60 plus old mom plays her music from her iPhone in her car using Bluetooth.

As do I with my iPhone 6 all the time. I use CD sometimes but most of the time it's Bluetooth.

Its an extra cost and its not the same as having one built in. Also why not put one inside on the desktop Macs?
[doublepost=1456738353][/doublepost]

Minority? Based on whose figures? Sp you are saying that most play their DVD's and Blue Ray's on their TV?

1. Why should the vast majority of people who no longer use DVDs be forced to purchase one because it is inside the machine?

2. As an example, i have a DVD collection, i have DVDs in both my old macbook Pro, my PS3 and also a BD-ROM in my PC. none of which have been used in about 2 years. I do not miss it in my 13 retina, my SP4, etc.

If you need a DVD drive, buy one, and share it between multiple machines if you want.

That sounds horrible

Yeah well I have all of Trek original series on DVD.

I have not refused anything as I use Bluetooth with my iPhone 95% of the time. Its just there are times when I will use a CD and so I have a need for a CD player in my car, just as I have a need for a DVD player in my MacBook.

Yeah, let us all stick to old tech because some people can't handle not living in the past.

You need to read my posts more carefully. I have stated clearly that I use digital movies and MP3 Audio most of the time. However I do use Cd/DVD sometimes.

Please keep the bickering about religion out of the tech-section.

We have the glorious PRSI for this.

Regarding that optical technology may be "outdated":

I'd reckon that data saved to optical media using M-DISC technology today, will outlast ANY hard drive now in existence, platter or memory-based, and probably outlast everyone reading this post as well!

Apple, Inc. sees the future of DVD is slowly dying. Digital video replaced DVD. I have seen too many broken DVD all over the street...It is bad.

And i'm sure you'll have fun searching for a particular piece of data on the 250 DVDs it takes to replace a single 1 terabyte hard drive, rather than just opening a file/web browser.

They also have no redundancy either, so if one of them gets scratched you're out of luck. Anyone doing data storage/archival on hard disk should be using some form of RAID and backups.

e.g., you can remove one of the drives out of my NAS and smash it to pieces with a sledgehammer - i still have all my data. If i take one of your DVDs and do that, you're boned.

Even new cars nowadays do not have cd players in them! This is not just an Apple thing anymore. Many other companies are following suit and realize that cd's are outdated so they got rid of them.
