Mistake #1? Relying on iCloud :)
Mistake #2? Forced to use iTunes, especially on a PC.

Both iTunes & Safari for Windows, Suck Bad.
On a Mac? Not so much.

Moral of the story in one word? BACKUP
Mistake #1? NOT relying on iCloud. Mistake #2? Having the option to use iOS 5's PC free functionality and instead making the "wrong decision" and using iTunes (which for the record, have never had a problem with).

The iCloud backup won't work on battery power unless you manually do it. Since iCloud backup works when connected to a power source and on wifi, your logic for turning that feature off doesn't make sense. This is clearly a user error.

This was my first thought. The OP clearly does not understand how iCloud backup works.

Mistake #3.

Thanks, @blueroom.

With iCloud backup you don't need a Mac or a PC. Just need a Wi-Fi connection and a power source.

True, but in this scenario we were talking about iTunes, which performs better on the Mac than the PC.

And in this scenario, the OP would not have HAD to rely on iTunes at all if he hadn't decided to turn off a function (that clearly indicates it only runs automatically when the phone is plugged in) because he wanted to save battery power.

Exactly. iCloud doesn't drain battery power because it doesn't do anything until your iDevice is plugged into a power source (however, if you manually start an iCloud backup while it's not plugged in, it will obviously use the battery power while it's running).

Ouch.

After reading this thread, I of course made sure all of my data is backed up.

As I am a PC user (I know, actually thinking of buying my first Mac laptop for Christmas) I want to make sure if things go haywire I'll actually know how to restore the backup.

Anyone tried this from iCloud yet? iTunes backup restores are very easy, but say you get a new phone, or something happens, how would you restore your phone from an iCloud backup?

I've tried it. It's very easy. Basically, you sign into iCloud when that screen appears when you first start up your new/erased iPhone, and then you select restore from iCloud backup. Easy peasy.

All you would need to do after that is to sync your music/movies/etc. and any photo albums/events that you typically sync to your iPhone (not your Camera Roll, that is restored from the iCloud backup).

Funny..after all these years of phone being only being able to connect to Windows machines & Mac users being SOL, all these PC users are complaining about THE ONE PHONE that is native to Mac.

I hated the Blackberry for Mac desktop app with all my being. It never really worked properly with my Mac. And all the PC user told me to go get a PC :|

Well, PC users, go get a Mac and you'll have an easier time.

Sorry for the some what angry sounding post. lol. It was not directed at you specifically, Vitzr.

Problem solved. iBackupbot got me my photos.

Will also be ditching that Vista POS and ordering a Mac mini, sooner rathert than later.

Although restoring didn't fix my initial problem of not being able to hear the other party intermittently. First call I made we both couldn't hear each other.

Glad to hear :) . I myself have iCloud backup turned on (it doesn't drain the battery because it only backups when it's charging) and regularly make an iTunes backup myself. Redundancy ftw.
