Exactly. I am not expecting a return exactly, but more to just have this technology in a sealed box 20 years from now would be neat. This technology will be obsolete soon the way we are moving. And you are right about the apple collectors. There are some serious apple collectors.

Just because someone is trying to sell it on ebay for $300 as a "collectors item" it doesnt mean much.
There's plenty of them on sale on ebay for around $100

Most of those are broken ones. They are getting anywhere from $150 to $200. There are some idiots trying to sell them for $400 unopened but nobody is bidding on them.

There are plenty of "SEALED" iPhone 1st Gens selling for around $100? Yes all broken and need TLC.

And people are not just trying to sell them, they actually are:rolleyes: Hence the bidders.

As of right now the second link I sent has a 1 bidder for $699!!! Right person will pay...

I am just trying to justify that this could be a "Apple Collectors" item. And maybe it won't. I got mine a month ago sealed for a lot less than any of these auctions... and people are bidding $300+. Give it 5 more years and it might be on the level of iPod classic 1st gen (which sealed sell for $900+).

Sell it in the next few years max.

It has a battery in it, batteries get old, leak and corrode.

This WILL destroy the phone and it will be worthless.

Collectors will know this, my guess is opened and flawless models will be with more because of this.

Think of it as a ticking time bomb.

If you keep it pristine and pass it on to someone it could have value 100 years down the road.

It probably wont work 100 years from now. Who cares if it can have value anyways? A 100 years later, you might not be here to enjoy the money from it.

You saw the value the 1st ever built Mac brought right? It sold last week. Approx. $220K if memory serves correctly. A non-initial build serial numbered iPhone sealed/not sealed will not bring anywhere near this amount. I'd imagine a sealed, boxed 1st Gen iPhone would bring appx. $700 to $1K in about 5 years or so. I would also argue this would be the max price you'll get for this phone for the next 10 years or so. After which, it might go up a little bit more...but not much more.

If you're not hurting to sell it, hang on to it and see what happens. If you're hoping to cash this phone in on a retirement plan....sorry, but it's not happening! If you're just curious, I can assure you the phone you've mentioned WILL NEVER SELL for more than the actual 1st Mac ever made which just actioned for a bit over $200K!

the original iPhone sold for $500, $600

what are you guys getting so worked up about at this point many of these auctions aren't even breaking even lol

lock this thread, put the phone away for 20 years and see if it's worth anything

btw at least it's a first gen, those are the only version collectors are ever worried about ( no one in history is going to give a crap about a 3rd gen iPod shuffle lol)

Wasn't it the Apple 1 that sold for $200K recently? A very low number produced, it was the Apple II that sold in big numbers (for the time).
