Hey, I have one of the first manufactured iPhone 2G 8GBs still sealed, brand new, in box. Do you think it will increase in value massively over the years?

I'm just wondering if I should hold on to it or not. Thanks!
Bro they are selling for thousands hang onto it and when apple comes out with something new then sell it because there will be hype based around apple one just sold for 20,000 keep it!

If you were thinking about this year, I would wait until the 10th anniversary iPhone comes out in September- that would be a good time to sell and yes you'll get a lot. If you want to wait for potentially a bigger amount over the long haul, yes someday in around 20-30 years it will be at its peak as a nostalgia item and will fetch the most then if you're willing to wait that long for a jackpot.

Yeah that's a good idea that's what I was thinking myself

Sell it, whats the point? Cool that you have it, but sell it! Make the $ now!
Maybe not the best idea in hindsight

More iphones come out. You value goes down...
Unless you can find some idiot who thinks original iphone would be freaking awesome for his/her collection, the value will go down. With AT&T trying to move to 3G/4G network, 2G iphone is not really considered as good value anymore.
Yea bad call man, I would advise against becoming a stock or currency trader

The first iPhone was a world game changer.

If Apple does well that one will be with something in 20-30 years.

For sure it will worth money some day, like any piece of old technology, Last year one of the 50 knowns Apple Is still on existence sold for $50K and it was used. make sure you keep it safe and away from moist, water and dust.

You will have to keep it for a long time, but the iPhone was as very important piece of tech when it was introduce, it will be very significant one day.
Difference you pointed out is huge..... 50 units vs 6 million units. IF the OP keeps the phone for lets say a few hundred years then maybe it would be worth any significant value.... but I'd doubt it.

If i can sell Yeezy sneakers for a thousand bucks after a week u definitely should hold onto a first gen unwrapped iPhone. Unwrapped being the key tho

Might want to keep it wrapped for about 100 years. By then it will be worth a fortune. :)

We are already in the 10th anniversary! It was announced on Jan 9th 2007, released sometime in June/July can't remember exactly. I just remember being one of the first to own the iPhone, yet there was not a person in line at my local store :)

So small update - I think it's actually going down in value as of late. I see on eBay an iPhone 8GB 2G sealed for as low as $3,500. And I count ten listings too, so the market is quite saturated.

I regret not investing in the more limited 4GB model. Investors are much more interested in this product. (Only two available on eBay at $10k and $20k).

The only good thing is that the iPhone I have was built in one of the earlier weeks. (I need to check which week exactly). It does not have the App Store icon on its home screen which should help with its appreciation.

There have been many people who were scammed by so-called "sealed" iPhones on eBay, so maybe you can make yourself stand out as an honest seller and justify a higher price.

Who the heck would buy those garbage phones? I had one of those both the 4gb and 8gb. So slow. I don't collect things I can't use and you can't use those. Take ten minutes to send a email lol.

Small update to a really old thread. It’s not just the market is saturated, there’s not much of a demographic that’s willing to pay those prices for a phone that’s basically non-operable. It’s a ‘nostalgia’ piece from the iPhone history in early days, that’s really what you’re purchasing, and it would have to be a specific buyer there be even interested in something like this and appreciate Apples back history.

Just because they're asking those prices does not mean it's worth that price. People can ask any amount they want for anything at all on eBay and that doesn't mean a thing.

The original iPhone is worthless at this point since all it can be used for is an iPod.

Resurrecting this super old thread!

I think we’re seriously looking at $10K for this now. USA Today featured the original iPhone earlier this year as a tech item that could be worth a lot.

Planning on holding on to it for at least another ten years - predicting $25K by then. Definitely a possibility someone could flood the market with a bunch of sealed iPhones. I see an eBay seller that has sold eight sealed iPhones presumably for ~$12K each with one remaining. Not great to know someone was holding on to so many so we’ll see how this all plays out in a decade.

$25k? You or no one else has no idea in 10 years what an iPhone 2G will be worth at all. For that matter, you may not even be around in 10 years, I would just sell it now and take advantage of what you think it’s worth, given there’s so many variables that can change in that long of a time period.

Going by this reasoning you can wait until the end of your life and perhaps get even 100k for this... sell it and make some real investment, like buying Apple stock or whatever else pleases you, I guarantee it'll get you more money than this iPhone over the next 10 years

I would be very wary of that seller. Selling unique, one off items like this with no individual photos of the actual item, and moreover, no feedback from most of the 8 they've sold. Also, interestingly, it only states that 1 has been sold, at half the price, if you go into it in more detail.

It's quite common to see these resealed. Note too that the clear wrap on the top of the box in the photo they're using is misaligned.

Unless you or someone opens the box to prove it's not fake, at which point you destroy lots of its value, how does anyone know what's in the box?

Schrödinger's phone.

The value is in not knowing :)
