How many chips are inside that box???

2 chips. 256 MB a piece. I was wondering if it matters what slot number they're in. I think I remember hearing something about that....

But they're chips that came from Apple as a bto option.

I've done the PRAM thing, and still had a crash. I'll do the open firmare. Will i need to re-update my firmware then?

thanks again! ;)

How is the OS 9 stability? Any occasional weird problems?

OS X will have memory problems, even with factory memory occasionally, don't rule it out because it came from Apple.

But if you have crashes, you'll definitely have to run fsck -y more often - the "orphaned nodes" and other nasties will compound the stability problems.

I haven't check out a hardware diagnostic disk, but you might want to ask to see if it'll be of use.

And last thing on the list (or first) should be taking your computer somewhere there is clean power and ruling this out if you don't have a line conditioner between the computer and the wall. Dirty power will cause all sorts of problems - usually those always works when you take it to the computer store gremlins.

you know, I'm completely OS X. Well, I very rarely have to use PS 6 in classic due to my scanner. But classic has always been wierd with strange happenings and generally funny things. I thought that was just the nature of the beast.

If I boot into 9, when my computer goes to sleep it won't wake up. I know there was supposedly a fix for this, but i tried to install it and it said i didn't need it???? I hardly ever boot into 9, so I didn't worry about it. But OS 9 never gives me the "lock up and bomb" maneuver, unlike OS X.

OS 9 is on a different partition. Is that bad? That's okay, right? That's the way I have my PowerBook set up, and it never gives me problems.

yeah, i am switching too, I get so tired of skippy going cheap on the nuts. peter pan is so much tastier, especially on toast....

errrrrrrr..... i am sorry, i guess nobody cares if I switch products or not.

memo to would-be-switchers:
Don't think that because we love apple and its products (sometimes) that we care if you switch.

I hope you find a great peanut butter, computer, and car wax.

I like JIF myself. the crunchy. ;)

btw...ummm...nobody said they were going to switch anything.

...

You're coming at this from the wrong direction. Right now you're basically assenting to the fact that your "computer is a hunk of crap". Which may be true: but don't arbitrarily assign things labels without discovering their true nature. (Comments like "OS X is bad" or whatever it was you said are Generalizations, and don't actually speak for every person/user involved). You should face this thing in a spirit of: "Hm, okay. There is a problem before me. Now, by mathematical dictum, all problems must have solutions, so . . . let's find the one for this."

I think if you take a more constructive routine you'll have some realization and the problem will abate.

Apple makes apple software for apple products, not your zoo of random **** over their buddy!

Shut your mouth

Install 9 first

Swith your brain on

And last of all Steven J. McJobbs doesn't give a crap about you!

hmm... I have no idea what the weirdo above is talking about, but...

Strange, I reset my open firmware and my computer is WAY faster. Why would that be? AlphaTech?

I had problems like this too on my old iMac.

Check to see if any of your fonts are corrupt. That caused HUGE problems w/ OS X, crashing repeatdly whenever I opened almost any program, etc. Just use the 50/50 method to isolate bad fonts, remove them, and that might fix your problem.

I'm always amazed that there are so many people that never had any problems with MacOS X... Is that just showing of ort the truth?

Of course it is pretty stable, but I don't know anyone in my evironment, who never(!) had a problem. Most frustrating is, when the machine is just freezing, that's what happened yesterday... I had that already 2 times before, but never was able to reproduce it on purpose and my Macs are in a 100% perfect condition.

I agree to some extent. OS X is bloatware. It's not even bloated with usable apps. It's bloated with eye candy which causes it to be slow and hungry. Hopefully Jag will help. Until then, work in OS 9 and play in OS X.

Other Thoughts:

Check you fonts like someone else mentioned. try to run with just the fonts that came in /System/Library/Fonts (the ones supplied by apple)
move /Library/Fonts - /System Folder/Fonts - and /Users/[user]/Library/Fonts
see if you still get crashes.

turn off all things that launch at login like palm and itunes helper

have you tried a new install of the system?

Amazed!

I'm absolutely amazed that you are having (or had) so much of a problem with OS X. As a PC user, since 1985, and an Apple user, since, 1988 (I use Windows at work and Apple at home), I've found that OS X is the most stable, reliable and friendly operating system that I've ever used. (I've used DOS, all of the Windows OSs, and virtually all of the Apple OSs.) I'll bet that your frustrations come (or came), not from an unreliable OS, but from an incorrectly installed OS.

I know that your posting was quite a while ago, so I hope you sought professional help (not psychiatric!) to straighten out the problem, and that you now know just how satisfying OS X can be.

OS X

Your HD may be failing. Your computer may be failing. It could be any number of problems. I've not had many problems with my iBook 466 and Mac OS X. I have had to force a reboot 5 or 6 times, with a recent one of last Monday.

Resetting the firmware just gets rid of crap that's bogging it down (or potentially bogging it down).

I would suggest removing one of the memory chips and see if OS X becomes stable. I have OS 9.2.2 and OS X (10.1.5) on the very same partition/drive. I haven't partitioned any of my system's drives, and OS X is as stable as bedrock. Is your OS X partition formatted HFS+ or did you go with the unix formatting?? If it's not HFS+, redo it and make it so... I would also suggest doing away with the multiple partitions and just single partition your hard drive. Especially if the OS X partition has less then 1GB of free space.

I have installed OS X on a wide range of systems, from a iMac 350, blue and white G3 (350) all the way up to my desktop here at work (733MHz G4 pre-QS) and 800MHz TiBook at home. ALL of them are using one partition on the hard drive, and none of them have the problems you have (actually, they don't have any problems).

Once OS X is installed boot into single user mode (Apple+s on boot) and type in "fsck -y" when you get a prompt (and it lets you type anything). Let it run until it comes back clean (without any problems/errors found/fixed).

>oh yea, it has USB printer sharing

HEELLLLLL YES! finally, and finally some real windows communicating. Samba was alright for free software, Dave was good (though not cheap)

>Until then, work in OS 9 and play in OS X

gotta do that, until 10.2 I hear...though I unfortunatly reformated my drive form the OSX install CD, and the OS9 drivers are no longer there...can't boot into 9 with out it trying to reformat the X drive.

>Your just to stupid to realize its not the operating system but your computer.

It could be a bad CD? scratches? bad burn?

>yes, and you're an intolerant imbecile. Oh wait...you're from arkansas, you might not know what that word means.

that's not nice, its people from Mississippii, sorry that was another joke too

Well, Quarkdawg, do you still think "OS X is bad"?

I know you had a rough day with your computer, but that gives you NO ... RIGHT to get angry at others. For future refrences, remember this.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
This has got to be one of the funniest threads in a long time.

It's like the guy fixing his car in his driveway and all the neighborhood men come over to give some help. Plenty of suggestions no clear answer.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
:p :p :p :p

who was i mad at? did i personally insult anyone (who didn't name-call or insult me first)?? Check the record.

This is an Apple forum, where people come to express their likes / dislikes / frustrations / greivences and to get some help sorting hardware / software probs out.

But I certainly didn't direct my frustration at any one person or persons. sorry if you took it that way. ;)
