I cant get the ringtones to work i am running 7.4 I put the m4r in itunes rename it. Then i use make iphone ring-tone so I have 2 and i see 2 of them and they both dont work : (

After going to the "Ringtones" tab in iTunes 7.4.0 and unchecking the boxes next to both copies of the ringtones and syncing then checking the boxes again and syncing again, this eventually worked for me. Took awhile and was kind of a pain, but it works! Many Thanks!!!

It was a pain to do, but finally got ringtones back on my 1.1.1 iPhone.

First downgraded to 7.4.0 iTunes.
Imported 3 m4r ringtones.
Synced.
MakeiTunesRingtones wouldn't work at first (turns out it was because I kept 7.4.1 around and had named both with their version numbers... I archived 7.4.1 and renamed 7.4.0 to just iTunes).
Added the 3 ringtones via MakeITunesRingtones.
Synced.
Two worked, one didn't (my favorite, of course :( ).
Finally used Quicktime Player to convert to AIF, reimported to iTunes, converted to ACC. Then repeated everything with the new encode. And it works!

So if your ringtones aren't working with 1.1.1. and the steps in this thread, might have to reconvert the audio files to get them to work.

Anyone else think it's really stupid that Apple has two different lists of sounds in 1.1.1? One ringtone list and then a separate list for the SMS alert sounds. Why not use a single list? And no custom SMS sounds (purchased or via hacks)? And why no different sounds for the OTHER alert sounds. They really seem to be missing OBVIOUS enhancements in the ringtone and alert sounds area.

Also, I thought there was supposed to be a volume control for the alert sounds in 1.1.1? Am I missing something?

I have my ringtones again! Thank you! Some didn't work, but most did. Are the steps to add new ringtones(one not on the phone before 1.1.1 update) the same. I cant get new ones to even show up on the phone. Thanks again.

Not working for me. :(

I am using 7.4.0 and have 1.1.1

I have tried it 9 ways from Sunday and still can't even get it to show up on my phone after it syncs. I had my ringtones in my sounds list previous and post 1.1.1 but after 1.1.1 they were silent. I woke up this morning to a vibrating phone.

All I can say is this is BULLS**T. Almost EVERY phone I have had before this I have been able to BT my own song clips to it and use them as ringtones. Now I have an iPhone that will play ALL my music but Apple is being a total stickler about us using our own music as ringtones. I guess you could say I am a little pissed. (Read: VERY)

I don't think I will buy another iPhone after my contract is over. Not with all the hassle it has been. The interface is cool and great to use but with the little headaches from all of this user hassling (over some pretty trivial details), the 2 year contract extension, constant freezing while checking email and while trying to unlock (not to mention it always tells me my email password is incorrect), and the huge price drop that happened after initial release, it is just too much to worry about. IT IS JUST A PHONE. I shouldn't have to deal with these issues on my phone. The customer support is ridiculous and the lockdown mentality Apple are adopting is scaring me away as a customer.

I have a feeling it is just going to continue to get worse unless we do something about it.

I have to say, I am very proud and thankful to all those who created the uproar about the $200 price drop. Don't let these companies push us around. We're the ones PAYING for their goods/services, and the customer is always right. I refuse to be nickel and dimed. I refuse to pay for a ringtone.
