Why should he have to reinstall the OS on a brand new computer? It's clearly a piece of junk and so it should be returned for a new one that works.

junk/jəNGk/
Noun:
1 Old or discarded articles that are considered useless or of little value.
2 A flat-bottomed sailing vessel typical in China and the East Indies, with a prominent stem, a high stern, and lugsails.

clearly.

thanks for the reply:)

Actually the problem occur when it is freshly open (no software installed), and I use migration assistant to transfer all my file from my MPA to rMBP.

Such problem didn't happened on my MPA...I am really curious about what caused the problem:confused:

Migration assistant is NOT a fresh install.

Can't stress this at enough.

Save your files to a USB key or if necessary external HDD and transfer them manually.

I don't know how or why, but migration and time machine restore can cause (transfer?) problems. Doing either after a fresh install does not preserve your fresh install.

This isn't the owners responsibility, fixing the machine upon receipt. Isn't this exactly why Apple touts its products as superior, "it just works"?

Right. And I have to believe that OP would be happier getting a new one as oppose to being told by a customer service agent how to reinstall the software. This is why Apple is the best in the business.

You know he means that it's of little value. The word "junk" has grown apart from the word "old"

This is what I was going to suggest. I've actually had much better experience "migrating" from an external hard drive than from another MAC with the exact same data. I would first back up your old machine to an external hard drive and then when you get the new machine, try migrating from that external hard drive rather than from the old machine itself. I recently bought 4 new MBA's and a new rMBP and that worked MUCH better for me in every case.

I am actually doing the same thing....and it failed me:(

I use migration assistant as I seldom keep a back up of those installed dmg file, therefore time machine really help me much with the restore function.

If this really didn't work, it seems that I have to download all those application again:(

Just receive my new mbpr yesterday, and it stop freezing in most circumstances! (I will keep on testing :D)
Thanks for all helping:)

Most?

It really shouldn't freeze at all IMO.

Just a general question about migrating in OS X. I'm hoping to get a new iMac soon (when Apple updates them) And will be migrating from a G5 PowerMac running Leopard, is there any house keeping or stuff I should take care of before migrating?

"most"??!!
If its not peachy perfect after using migration assistant then I would exchange it or take everything to the Apple geniuses again. Reinstalling the OS from scratch then moving your files piecemeal is not a reasonable request. Some issues appear to arise when migrating from earlier OS's such as Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. An unacceptable situation in my opinion.

Generally migrating your old info to your new computer works fine. But there's a chance that there's some preference or setting in your old stuff that is causing a problem on the new computer. When you get your new machine, try it out before you migrate your info. As someone else suggested, watch a movie, do the things you were doing on this one that caused the problem to surface. If it works ok, then you can try migrating your old info over. Then if you run into a problem, you'll know it's a software issue and not the computer itself.

this is exactly what i just did a few days ago, picked up a mbp and pretty much tested it with some various functions before i decided to migrate all my itunes files on an older pc

stopped freezing in most cases....that doesn't seem like an improvement.

Is this a replacement rMBP?
nope, the call center claimed it as a new mbpr, and it also came will the whole new package.
Actually it did freeze once for the new machine, but I doubt that might caused by software problem.

I actually did a time machine backup with my previous mbpr, and I just migrate that copy to the new machine. It seems everything going well.....till now:D

So what is the solution if we don't use migrate, install all the programs, music and data from scratch?

My mum went from an iBook (Tiger) to 2011 MPB (Lion) at the start of the and she is yet to report any major problems or stability issues.

I'll be going from Leopard to Mountain Lion and hope it's just as easy.
