Anyone have a story for me of powerbooks going after being 2 or 3 years old?

I plan on keeping this one for awhile

Someone posted here today about buying an iBook G3 for $450.

Used apple notebooks are just expensive, some go for ridiculous prices. Best thing to do if you are short of money is to buy a refurbished MacBook.

get it since it's a notebook, which break more easily and are more costly to repair. if just one thing happens to your notebook and you're without applecare, you'll regret not buying it. go for it, at least for the peace of mind.

edit: ok, i just saw that you bought it. good for you. and how did you get a hair in your display?

My parents and I decided not to get AppleCare for our G5 iMac (rev. B) which ended August 1st. I'm crossing my fingers that nothing goes wrong!

What I'd do is sell the PB and buy a new MBP. No way am I paying 1/3 the price of a MBP to get insurance against Apple's own shoddy manufacturing.

Is it better to buy in store or online?

The Apple rep tried explaining to me I get better help if I buy in store. Something about being able to come in and they take care of it. Other wise I have to call and send out if I buy online. Is this true?

And which is better. I'd rather go to the store I suppose, but would be happiest if I didn't have to choose. You know be able to do what I feel like that day.

Completely untrue. If you have AppleCare (from whatever source you get...as long as the machine is registered with it), they'll do whatever they can for you in the store and then send it out if it's beyond the scope of what they do at the Genius Bar.

FWIW, I bought AppleCare with my PowerBook right off the bat, and I went through four repairs with it in just over two months until it was FINALLY replaced. Now, the headphone jack on the new one is faulty. In short, I won't buy another Mac without it, period.

Yeah that's pretty much my line of thinking. My G4 ibook is a year old in a week or two and I'm not getting applecare; I've had no problems and if I did, I'd rather have the $250 credit on an intel book of some sort.
