The IDEA of an MP3 player was out there, but they were the first to do it successfully.
Same as with the first ever PC back in the days of the Apple 1. PC users should be kissing Apple's ass because the PC wouldn't be the same without them.
Tablets were out in VERY limited form when the iPad was released. Apple was the first to use a successful capacitive touch screen.
They might not ALWAYS have the original idea when it comes to the overall product, but they sure as hell innovate the features and make the device the industry standard.
As for the iPhone not being the first true smartphone? What was out there? The next best thing was a blackberry and that is NOT a smart phone.
I'll work from the bottom up:
1) How in God's name can you not consider a Blackberry a smartphone? How about Windows Mobile (Not WP7)? How about Nokia's various OS's?
This leads to a sub argument. What is the definition of a smartphone? In my opinion it's a phone that provides many features consolidated into one device. And that's exactly what Blackberrys (Blackberries?), Windows Mobile phones, etc did.
2) Apple rarely ever has an original idea when it comes to their products. Yes, I still buy Apple products. Yes, I have iPhones, iPods, Macs. But that's not to say I'm completely ignorant to any other brand. I know how Apple works. I know about how other companies work. I choose Apple because I want to.
3) Tablets weren't in very limited form. You could see tablets around way before iPads were released. Yes, with the release of an iPad, tablet sales soared. I'm not arguing that. I'm just arguing that Apple was not the first (by a longshot) to release a multifunctional tablet.
4) MP3 players were successful before the iPod. The physical MP3 player, not the idea of one. The iPod just made it easier, at first. Plus, with the first generation ones, it wouldn't even sync with Windows, which shut out most computer-users to the idea of owning an iPod. (And yes, at that point most computer users were Windows users. As they are now).
I like Apple, I like their products. I use their products. That's why I browse these boards. Does not mean that I will blindly follow and hail Apple as the greatest company in life. Apple doesn't invent, they innovate. Heck, I'll even use Apple's advertisement campaign: Think Different. They see a product, see a different way of implementing the same thing, and then they implement it.
They don't invent a new product, per se.
