I do not require intense processing either, and the iPad is terrible IMO. I need more than a giant iPod touch.

LOL at laptops replacing desktops too. Tablets like the iPad will not replace laptops either, they're little more than giant phones at the moment. Fine for people who only want email and Facebook, but there's plenty of people who actually need computers for more than socialising.

But yes, competition is very good. There's a lot that Apple need to add / revise when it comes to the iPhone, so with all the extra competition, hopefully it will give them a bit more reason to do so.

I have to agree with you here. I think they're cool but my iP4 does everything an iPad can do and more... just with a smaller screen. I kinda don't get it I guess. What can an iPad do that my phone can't?

Agreed.

Like, it makes me regret my projector + 8 foot wide screen for my movie room. I mean, what can it do that my 46" LCD TV couldn't?

Well then the iPad is obviously not for you.

And that's exactly why they won't completely replace laptops. As long as people need something more powerful, they will continue to have a market. The iPad has found its own market; it's not replacing something else.

People need to stop assuming that because X product comes out it's immediately a "Y-killer." It's short-sighted to assume that no new niches or markets can be created.

In any case, it would be NICE for Windows Phone to do things that would pressure the rest of the market to evolve, but I'm not seeing it happening for a while. They're just playing catch-up.

Can you make these comments AFTER you've had an iPad please? I could name 12 things the iPad does well that the iPhone doesn't...and how can I make these comments? Because I have both. Use an iPad for a week- heck even a day...then you may post your gibberish.

Apple doesn't need "competition" to evolve- it does so regardless of what else is out there. Look at the progression from the 1st gen iPhone to the 3G/3GS. Was there anything else noteworthy on the market to drive this? Not hardly. Apple evolves independently my friend.

OP credibility = ZERO.

I can't help but wonder how many of those iPad owners would say "A Mac? God no I'd never buy a Mac."

I have friends who downright despise the Macintosh platform that want an iPad.

It is worth noting as well that the Windows 7 phones announced yesterday will be available at launch on any network you want as long as it is not CDMA (Verizon).

Lackluster iPad? You have got to be joking. It's the most successful electronics launch ever. You are obviously an apple hater. The iPad is a thoroughly enjoyable and useful device. The windows phone is a complete joke.

300,000 sold in one day, and 3M sold in 80 days is anything but 'lackluster'.

From NetworkWorld last week (hardly an Apple rag):

The iPad may very well be the fastest selling consumer electronic product of all time. To put things in perspective, Apple sold about 3.27 million iPads during the third quarter of 2010, and estimates for the current quarter range from 3.8 million units on the low end to upwards of 6 million units.

+1

You're in a mac community forum board, and you open a new thread saying, "i hope the windows phone will put a dent in iphone sales"

Calling the iPad lackluster doesn't help, stupid comment without backing up your statement...

go to another forum

oh yeah, the windows 7 phone is a joke

Wow. OP here.

There are some really snooty users here apparently. I said the iPad was lackluster, please point to where I said it wasn't flying off the selves.

For those of you who don't grasp diction, I was referring to the features.

To the others, thank you all for contributing to this thread, glad you were able to get some intellectual fodder going on here. Who knows, maybe the Windows Phone will surprise us.

Personally, I would rather see Microsoft and Apple at each others throats again forcing them both to create better products. I grow tired of the Apple vs. Google.

Finally, I am not a hater. I guess your definition of a hater is someone who buys $5000 of Apple merchandise (sig) plus a few stocks. Get over yourselves, it's users like you that give mac users the smug and elite stereotype.

One minute your calling another member a hater, the next your declaring the windows phone a joke, as though you are the expert, and speak for millions of people.

Look in the mirror, take responsibility. Be courteous.

Cheers... :)

You just wait and see. In 5 years, tablets will be able to completely replace the need for laptops. Not desktops mind you, but laptops assuredly. Browsing media is not enough, I want to create and build.

Gah, I hope not.

I actually much prefer the laptop form over a tablet. If nothing else, give me a physical keyboard anyday. And no, I don't want to have to carry a seperate keyboard and have to connect it up anytime I take out my computer. The laptop is so much more convenient for a real computer that is protable format. Just flip it open, you have a physical keyboard and a screen that is propped up right in front of you.

Oh, and I mostly use my computer to browse the internet. But I like responding to people. And I'd hate to have to rely on a frikkin tablet to type my responses. Maybe it's cause I know how to type (I kinda wonder those who don't care about having a physical keyboard are also those who only know how to type by looking at the keyboard).

You point out that the iPad is lackluster in features, but fail to point out why 3 million of them have left the store in 80 days.

Someone in the world will always find something lacking in features. I personally think bananas could grow with some cinnamon.

Just because the internet is anonymous it doesn't mean you have to be a wise acre. The above could have been stated without sarcasm and demeaning nouns. So I guess William thinks the bigger screen is what makes it "worth it" and Steve has 12 (still unknown) things that the iPad does better and thinks I can't ask a question without owning the device.

An answer with supporting anecdotal or factual evidence would be much more appreciated. I haven't knocked the iPad or either of your decisions to get one so the question is... "Who pissed in your Cheerios?"

Well, to be fair the ipad makes a much better book reader cause they can actually display an open like book with two pages for ibooks rather than one page (it is really nice, but the iphone equivelant is a decent compromise). Also, some games can have extra features cause of more room to put them (after playing with some game that there is an iphone equivelant).

So I could see the larger screen allowing for some stuff.

That being said, I personally don't see a need for it myself when I have an iphone for when I can't take my laptop with me, and a perfectly portable 13" laptop. Any place I'd bother taking an ipad with me (meaning I actually have to carry a seperate item other than my purse), I'd just take my laptop with me and get a full computer with a real keyboard that props up the screen for me. Sure, it's a little bigger/heavier, but to me the compromise of weight is well worth what more my laptop can do for me (and if nothing else, the ease of typing). I mean a 13" MBP really isn't that big and quite portable.

I'd really really hate to see the ipad replace laptops. Now, I personally wouldn't care these days if desktops disappeared but I'm sure some one else might have objections to that. It just seems laptops are getting powerful enough that why bother with a desktop that definitely isn't portable? I like being able to take my laptop with me on vacation and actually having my computer with me wherever I travel. I joke that home is where my computer is (yeah, maybe I'm a tad bit addicted ;) ).

I doubt that Windows Phone 7 devices will make a sizable dent in iOS devices sales. I do however believe that they will get apple to be a bit more through with their iOS features and stability. It seems to me that Apple has gotten sloppy with their updates lately. We need a "Snow Leopard" -esque update for iOS in the near future.

i wouldnt say the ipad is lackluster but I would definitely say its the dumbest product i have seen. IMO its just an over sized ipod touch which I think is dumb. Apple needs to do some "revolutionary" with the ipad instead of just increasing the real estate size of an ipod touch.

As for the 3 million sold. Id says its the brand selling and the fact that the ipad can be useful in certain situations and for certain people.

Don't worry. WP7 is no threat to anyone. It will fail just like every other major Microsoft endeavor not named "Windows" or "Office." ;)

WP7 isn't even a worthy competitor to Android 2.1. :D

Have you used the not-yet-released Windows phone you are slamming? You are obviously a non-Apple hater.
