There is a known issue with retina MBP and USB 3.0 drives and devices. My WD Passport and Lexar USB 3.0 card reader didn't work, but the latest update solved that for me!

Interesting, I never had an issue with my WD MyBook Essential (3TB, USB3.0).

I got a Toshiba one 750 gb .

I got this one

I tried all those and nothing . It seems I will have to buy a USB 2.0 CABLE for it to work , I read that in the toshiba website .

I almost got one of these drives, but I was reading some reviews on Amazon, and while the reviews average 4 stars, there seems to be a consensus that the USB connector is faulty. You have to have it connected "just so" or the drive won't mount, or if it does, it will unmount with just a slight movement of the connector (according to some).

I just found this from one of the Amazon user reviews: Toshiba Acknowledges MacBook Woes in Canvio USB 3.0 Hard Drives http://www.phonenews.com/toshiba-acknowledges-macbook-woes-canvio-usb-3-0-hard-drives-18699/

I'd recommend the Lacie Rugged USB 3.0. I got mine of amazon for a reasonable price. Since then I have partitioned it using FAT, NFST (the windows one I think I messed it up), and Mac OSx Journaled and it works great with all of those and has no problem reading.

The speeds are really good too (not surprisingly).

I just bought an el-cheapo USB3 drive caddy (less than $10 delivered), which has somewhat dodgy instructions, but works fine. Installation manual:

"Separate the upper cover by pressing back-end button (side button) from the main, the cover should be pushed to make parallel moving forward cover from the host and then you can find out".

But, once I worked out how the cover comes off, I put my old 512Gb SSD in from my previous computer and it works perfectly. Pretty quick, too.
