It doesn't have AirDrop because it doesn't have the correct hardware. Just like the 4S doesn't have LTE.

You are correct though. The writing is on the wall that at some point the iPad 3 will no longer be supported. Its a shame that all the iPad 3s have mysteriously stopped functioning. Weird huh?
Stopped functioning? What are you talking about?

My guess is that the ipad3 and iPhone 4S are entitled to one more OS upgrade, though expect to get just the bare minimum in new features.

The iPad 3 has 1GB of ram compared to iPad 2. If and when iPhone 4s still gets iOS 8 or even 9, I'm sure iPad 2 and 3 will also get iOS 8 and 9 because:

A. They have a faster A5, A5X clock speed at 1.0Ghz vs. 800Mhz on 4s;
B. iPad 2 has the same amount of RAM as iPhone 4s;
C. iPad 2 has about the same numbers of pixels to push as iPhone 4s (1024x768 vs. 960x640) <- I may be wrong on this one since iPad 1 and iPod touch 4 has the same spec with iPad 1 having a higher clock speed but iPad 1 was dropped in iOS 6.
D. iPad 3 has 1GB of RAM;

IOS7 somehow feels laggier on my ipad3 compared to my 4s. I wonder if there is something about IOS on ipads and tablet apps requiring more resources to run compared to iphones? After all, why was the ipad1 denied IOS6 when the 3GS (which has the same ram and a slower processor) at least got piecemeal features, and the iphone4 (same processor, but more ram) can still barely support IOS7?

I am not sure if a straight comparison in specs is meaningful here.

It really depends on the power of the device. 3GS got iOS 6 because its screen is just 480x320 + near A4 processing power. I'm sure apple tests the quality of use for each iteration of iOS on older devices to see if they will support it or not.
