This article sums it up almost perfectly.

My biggest issue is that, unlike when I had the 6 Plus...it doesn't feel like a Plus phone (yeah yeah it's max but still). The Max doesn't seem to be aware that it's a big phone. I liked carrying the 6 Plus around because it had several benefits. It knew it was trying to be an iPad mini of sorts. The Max doesn't IMO.

I want to love my Max. It's gorgeous but the increased bulk just doesn't feel worth it because you're not really trading one thing in for another. Maybe with the next update things will change.

One of the main reasons I went with the XS is because the XS Max was to unwieldy for me and it offered absolutely zero benefits from the XS. Had the camera been better, the battery been significantly bigger, or their be other specs that made it better than the XS I would have gone for it. However, with my XS I get all the same specs in a more compact device.

Do not get me wrong, the XS Max is a gorgeous device and I hope those who opted for it thoroughly enjoy it. I am just very happy that Apple made the phones spec for spec not leaving those of us who like the 5.8” longing for the specs of the 6.5” device.

Completely agreed. I'm actually surprised that I want a smaller device when I always wanted larger ones before.

The biggest turnoff of the Max is the overall UI. They need to make everything smaller because it all looks like it’s zoomed in. Wouldn’t hurt to allow more space for more apps on one page. They should’ve done that last year with the X. Should’ve done a lot of things...

The reason why Apple gave the Max the same specs as the XS apart from the size itself was probably due to all the complaints of the Plus models having more features than the 4.7” iPhone. It’s weird to see the opposite complaints now. Isn’t this what you all wanted? Just the size as the differentiating factor? Yet there’s just as many complaints? I don’t get it. I can understand why they don’t listen to forums like these.

That might be why Apple made it that way. No way in heck would I be able to handle the Max. It’s too big for me to use. I like the screen size but my hands are too small. If I were to be in the market to upgrade and the Xs Max had something that I really wanted that the Xs didn’t have, I wouldn’t be too happy. Wouldn’t be a smart move for Apple to do but at the same time they didn’t really give the Max an advantage... even something minor. It’s a tough decision to make.

It literally boils down to if you want a 5.8” screen or a 6.5” screen. Super happy Apple did not leave us 5.8”ers longing for something that the larger device got. Hopefully Apple continues this.

Different groups of people?

I would absolutely hate it if Apple made the iPhone Max models superior than the standard size by adding better features.

They should only differ by screen size and I can tolerate battery life. The bigger phones should show more content, and make graphics more pleasant to look at. People who buy big phones just want a better experience with a bigger display.

No one needs to get the Max, the 5.8” is the best size in general.

Couldn’t agree with you more. I can use the X with one hand, which I love. My hands are smaller than the average size for a male. The Plus models were difficult to type with one hand. The X, I can... if it was any bigger, no. The overall size of it is the size of the 8... loving that part too. I like that Apple took this route but there are others that don’t. To each his own.

If they do they should make it optional. Some (many?) of us may like that everything is not smaller.
Our eyesight may not be what it was 60+ years ago. With the current Max it’s a pleasure to read.

I'm really liking the screen size of the Max. And I'm coming from an iPhone 7. I have average size hands, and I don't type on phones with one hand. The size is very manageable. I like the slight increase in size of the screen elements, and I wouldn't want to cram more icons in. I suppose that's one of the advantages of Android. You can resize icons and their spacing. Since I read a lot on my phones, and my reading vision isn't what it used to be, I'm happy with the larger Max.

Yup. It’s so much better than the 6 plus (which I owned) that they are not even worth comparing. So much wasted space, inferior and smaller screen.

Updated apps show a bit more info. But overall the main reasons I moved to the Max was the wider keyboard for typing. That’s one the main aspects I missed coming from 7 Plus to 5.8 iPhone X. Also video is bigger.

If there was a best size then apple would have not made the 6.5” size. Apple needs to complete with the note.

I had both the X and 8 before and I would not trade back to a smaller iPhone. I love the size, look and the weight of the Max! I still use the SE for running, in the gym and when I am active and dress very casually like in shorts or tennis apparel. It the right size for these activities. Otherwise, the Max is use for formal dress suits and for jeans wear.

I said the 5.8” is the best size in general. Not insinuating that the 5.8” model is the perfect size and Apple shouldn’t make any other sizes. But the design of the 5.8” is the best middle ground for not being too small or not being too big.

Like I said, people who go for the Max models want a better experience with a bigger display, and you agree. But in general, the iPhone Max is too big for most to be efficiently used with one hand. And there are are some who aren’t bothered with two-handed phones. But not everyone wants a huge iPhone. 5.8” is the best compromise in general, since you still get a bigger screen that’s still useable with one hand.

People saying that the plus(max) should be different are crazy. Think about it. If they had a the XS with a single camera, lower the ram and lower the ppi resolution. To make it a XS version, have the max with all the higher spec that it has now that would not be fair for the people who dont want or cant handle a super large device like the max.

Apple did the riht thing by having to similar phone just difference size. What they need to work on how to better use the extra realstate screen on the max

Might be the perfect size for u, i can speak for myself and also other people i know that couldnt handle the X phone factor. It was just to small for me and i was miss typing all over. Without cropping the videos u get a video in youtube to the size of a 4.7” iphone. The Max is the perfect size for whoever use a plus or coming from an android phone.

Doesn't it have a significantly larger battery? Certainly needs it to power the screen. I do agree, I would like to see them give it more of those iPad features given the screen size - but I'm glad that's the only real differentiator as well

To me the XS Max is unrealized potential. You get a bit better video/game experience and can fit like one more line on screen but that's about it at least for now. It remains to be seen if iOS 13 brings software features to better take advantage of the large screen like split screen multitasking. Pencil support for the XS Max would have also been nice.

Overall the XS Max is just too big for me so I went with the XS and am happy about that decision.

The problem
Is apple iphone xs n xs max r eerily the same in camera

Where as before youd have an advantage with the 6 6s 7 8 plus by buying the plus model

OIS 6plus
OIS 6s plus
PORTRAIT 7
PORTRAIT 8

Now all the bloody phones r the same lol except size and battery. To me the battery isnt a significant jump to worth considering the xs max over the xs esp if its 170aud more here for those extra two things

Its just upscaled most ppl better save 100$ n jus cash in on the xs.. plus landscape mode in home screen is non existent which i found at the store VERY weird...

The Max phone should be superior to the smaller XS. More room. Higher price. Chip should be faster. Should have more RAM and better camera & speakers. iOS should be made for it but it's clearly not. Could have pencil for it but nope.

That said, I appreciate the bigger screen. Looks great. But it's a gimped phone that could be much better especially given the higher price for no apparent reason. Perhaps it's first gen issues. It's not deserving of an S. It's definitely not a Plus.
