I like it too, but the Calendar app is just stupid. Didn't they already have skeuomorphism on the old iCal style except that it was modeled after a modern calendar, not a cheapo ugly one?

Meh. I could take it or leave it.

I'd rather have a skeuomorphic Notes than a blank white Notepad a la Windows, for aesthetics. But if it reduces functionality, it isn't worth it.

A skeuomorphic Phone app would be funny... imagine rotary dialing on the iPhone.

I like it in moderation, when compared to the flat and unimpressive nature of things like Windows Phone, I feel a little depth is necessary. But things like the Address Book on Mac OS X and Game Center are just too far. Passbook is always mentioned, but I think that is a bit more useful. Knowing what is a "Ticket" or a "Coupon," because they actually look like that. The Shredder is cute the first time, but I suppose it doesn't really get in the way. I really like the design language of the new "Music" app on the iPhone, I hope they carry that over to the rest of the OS. I just want some more consistency.

I like them. As long as they don't ever become too over designed and encroach on the functionality of the app itself I don't mind. I love how my compass looks like a compass, or passbook looks like a load of loyalty cards. I'd much rather iOS had a bit of personality and quirkyness instead of every single iOS app having a white/silver background and identical fonts.

Some of it is ok to my eyes and the more subtle the better. Too much or too drastic and things start looking like Microsoft Bob

Ooooh Microsoft Bob! I forgot about that example of "Skeumorphism gone bad". Adding a screenshot for everyone to see what it looked like, 17 years ago:

I have to say I'm not a fan. I detest the look of iCal and don't use it for that very reason. I also dislike the denim clothe background in the pull down notifications in iOS. One of my objections to skeuomorphism is that detracts from function because it reduces the visual contrast between text and its background.

I like some of them, but I think the podcast app went too far. Im in my late 30's and even I don't remember those reel to reel tapes. I think they need to use metaphors that are still relevant today.

I don't mind it but its not very "Apple".

The font used in Game Center is the most surprising thing I've seen apple do. It really is hideous.

I like it too.
It's these pseudo intellectual apple fanboys that don't.
The one that think they know how to make everything better than the people who have created things. Yet these same people probably haven't created a thing in their lives.
Anyone laugh out loud when they read stuff like this?

How anyone can claim they like the look of Game Center is beyond me. It blows my mind that Steve was a big proponent of this. Yuck.

Actually skeuomorphism does NOT include the wheels used to select the day of the week or the month. Nor does it describe the toggle switches in Settings.

...

I think what you're calling "skeuomorphism" is nothing more than Apple's User Interface. It's a very nice interface at times (eg. being able to use wheels to pick the date). But that doesn't make those particular elements "skeuomorphic". It just makes them a good user interface.

Yes. I think you're right. I am talking about all things in iOS that hark back to the physical world. The toggles and wheels are not necessary (they are there instead of a bullet box or a text number field), but they are functional. Whereas the leather and stitching are neither necessary nor functional - ie. skeuomorphic.

But definition of skeuomorphism aside, I am a fan of references to the physical world in a graphical user interface.

That being said, I'm not really that fussed. I just like it. It's not going to stop me from getting an Android phone next. Apple has been left behind. But that's got nothing to do with skeuomorphism.

You also have to draw the line somewhere. Game Center is a disgusting design.

I don't mind it as long as it is done with good taste and it doesn't impede on usability. Apple have been failing to do it right in iOS 5 + 6 and OS X Lion + Mountain Lion.

Some of it.

I think it makes more sense on a touch device. Take iBooks: having ebooks look like physical books works because you can take your finger and fold a page over or flip through. It's actually functional.

Game Center and Find My Friends are butt ugly.

On the Mac it makes little sense.

I like notes, Passbook, iBooks, Photobooth, Voice recorder, Calculator, Compass. So I like some.

Some of it is alright, but when it is overused (like Apple has been doing recently) it gets really gaudy and detracts from the overall usability.

It's ugly and looks very dated. Can't wait to see it go or at least scaled back.
