I would use it but I actually care about the people around me - it's super annoying and not worth hurting other's eyes

Except people think you're a pervert taking pictures of them. Or it flashes in a theatre and ruins the movie.

Just turn it off.

Yeah I suppose I'll miss that, I have my phone set to give different color notifications depending on whether it's for an email/voicemail/text/kik/IM.

Even special colors for people XD

Old news for some but since this is the first time I'm really starting to use it I figured a thread was in order for those who might not know.

Simply go into Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Turn on "LED Flash for Alerts".

This way I can put my iPhone face down, knowing that any text message or phone call will cause the LED light to blink so I know to pick it up.

Much better option for me when my phone is on silent than relying on vibrate.

Nice tip.....thanks

I used to use this feature until
Everyone got annoyed in my office with distracting strobes in meetings. Blackberry had that perfected but I can only imagine what that would do to our battery life. I miss that and the easy way to throw it in a dock to charge it. RIP Blackberry...

would be cool if we could choose which LED goes off. Maybe the Amber would be a little less intrusive or bright

It would be cool if Apple put some tiny leds around the body of the phone to give us a real notifiaction system instead of what they have now. It is one thing that Blackberry did do BETTER!

I wish they had one like Blackberry. That's the only thing I miss about when I had a blackberry, the flashing red LED that kept flashing when you had unread messages

Me too. I tried it hopeless specially in a meeting or a dark area, it's like a disco strobe.

My old Touch Pro had a LED ring around it's home button. Lit up whenever there was a notification. ...

Yeah, a lot of people had hoped that the ring around the Home button was a notification light, instead of a fingerprint sensor.

I loved my old Palm Pre, with its light that would softly pulse. Wasn't it even multi-color and settable? Like blue for texts, green for emails, red for voice mail, etc.

I had a Samsung flip phone like that. Their first one that did email. You could set the colors for emails as well as per person. i went through 5 or 6 of them because of a flaw in the joint. Cheap plastic phones suck.

My wife uses it- now she can immediately find her phone in her luggage-sized purse!

Great idea!

As an aside, I've wondered why women with huge purses don't have bodybuilder-class biceps. Lugging those things around all day would wear me out quickly.

They all had that option, not just the 5s. If it would blink instead of flash, now that would b usefull

I only have negative experiences with others using this feature:
- A girl behind me in the theater, texting throughout the movie.
- A girl behind me at a concert.
- People using this at a dark restaurant/bar.

If you choose to use this feature, please be respectful of others.

I'd prefer an actual light, though I'm spoiled by my Moto X:
