Here's my latest. Scheduled for October 10th delivery. When it first shipped the scheduled delivery date said October 14th but later changed to the 10th so I have no problems with that.

In 2012, their revenue was US $54.1 billion, operating income was US $1.343 billion, and net income was US $807 million. So they paid everyone's salaries and profited $800M. I ain't crying for them.

My wife's family member (her uncle) retired from ups at age of 54 due to stock options. He was logistics guy and explained it all to me.

FedEx does similar things. But u wanted to know a little side truth. FedEx usually is a little faster getting products out of China than UPS. He makes jokes that FedEx bribes china officials to clear their planes with cargo faster.

As a former UPSer (1992-1999) I can give you some background.

1. Customs is in Alaska. Both FedEx and UPS MUST fly to Alaska for anything shipping from China.
2. UPS has one MAJOR air hub in Louisville. This is Worldport and from Worldport is where everything ships in the UPS system.

I worked at the Ontario, California International Air Hub. It's the Air hub for the West Coast and is the equivalent of Worldport for UPS on the west coast. Only, it's not even a quarter of the size of Worldport. Your iPhone is going to go from Worldport through Ontario and then on to Los Angeles.

Apple maintains several distribution sites around Worldport and around FedEx's major hub as well which makes it convenient for UPS to control Apple shipments per Apple's instructions.

Is Worldport big? Odd place to have customs.

Note location of Customs. Not in Louisville...

Does anyone know how long it typically takes UPS to get a phone out of China? My phone "shipped" on 10/6 with a scheduled delivery date of 10/10.

But, it's now 10/9 and my shipment appears to still be sitting in ZhengZhou. There's an arrival scan there on 10/6 at 8:20 PM, but no departure scan and no change to the scheduled delivery date. Is it possible the phone shipped but the tracking just hasn't updated?

It's kind of important as I'm trying to arrange for someone to be home to sign for it, but if there's no hope of getting it on the 10th I won't bother.

Good info but I have a question. My 5S shipped from China to Korea, sat there for 4 days and then flew back to China before heading to Alaska. I came looking here for an explanation and saw your post. To me it just seems crazy. any idea why they would do that?

I worked for UPS for all of like 30 days. Started unloading the trailers but within a week was top of the bel sorting and scanning. Crap was flying everywhere! Nuts!
No idea why this would happen. I only have a general knowledge of their logistics system. I did have to call them once to ask them why the tracking showed my package going back to it's origin point. They said it was a glitch or something in the tracking. Things are probably much different now. It's been 14 years since I was there.

I worked the Ontario, California Intra Sort, 9pm to 1am, but hours varied, especially during Christmas. Sometimes we came in as early as 6 or 7 pm, depending on volume and sometimes we walked out at 5 or 6am.

I started in unload. Trailers and air containers. They had me learn the sort (the sort is simply internal destinations based on zip code). Once I passed the sort test they transferred me to bulk (Irregs) because the Ontario hub was just opening. When I started we were on the old north side of the airport in an outside sorting area.

I did bulk for seven years. Bulk is large items or items that would just tear the belts apart. People ship car parts, tires, 10 gallon buckets (liquid and dry), coolers, styrofoam, poles (metal and wood) oversize boxes, etc. Bulk drivers have to load these up on carts and physically drive those cars to the different load sides. So you have to know the sort.

When UPS introduced over 70s that's when we really got hit because the bulk drivers were the ones that had to move items 70-150lbs around the facility.

I know it's all pre-calculated to save them money, but COME ON, I'd have it (iPhone 5S) by now if it took a direct flight to LA!

Do you not understand the earth is round and that map is flat? This is much less of a detour than your have hamfistedly drawn in...

Mine went from China to Korea to Hong Kong to Alaska, and is now in Kentucky as well. :-(

You and me both except mine went to Shanghai after Korea. Only logic I can think of is maybe it had to stop in Korea to have Samsung put the chip in...just kidding. I should have had it get me some dumplings...

You can presign something and hang it on ur door. they will leave it of give it to a neighbor. I have the form here in front of me in case I need to jet out tomorrow assuming it makes it in from Kentucky...

That is true. What may look like a strange route to someone is actually a shorter route. People do not count the curvature of the earth into their concept of flight planning. What may be a direct route to them can actually be much farther in distance which eats fuel and wastes time.

true except in my case and the other guys who's phones took a sabbatical in South Korea for 4 days......
