I still don't understand, Airs don't come with a choice for the memory, so can someone please explain this to me?

Ok, here it is.

Apple uses more than one brand/manufacturer for some of the components in their laptops. in this case, some Airs have Samsung screens, some have LG. Some have Samsung SSDs, some have Toshiba.

Someone ran a benchmark program and found out that in some tests, Samsung SSD was a little faster than the Toshiba. They would have never noticed this difference had they not run a benchmark, as both are crazy fast and in everyday use you can't tell the difference. Perhaps if you copied a very large file side by side one would finish a second or two sooner. So what?

Well, for some folks this was unacceptable. They had to have the "faster" SSD no matter what, since they considered the other one "inferior". Sigh. Same thing with the screens. Someone said the Samsung was better than the LG. Someone said they liked the LG better than the Samsung. Some folks rushed back to the Apple Store to return their "defective" Airs because they had an LG screen. The first post I linked you to was my attempt at showing there really is no difference worth obsessing about.

Fact is Apple doesn't advertise the brands of components inside their Airs. This is not an option you can choose when you buy. You can pick screen size (11" or 13"), processor (i5 or i7), amount of memory (2GB or 4GB), amount of storage (64, 128, or 256GB) and that's it. it doesn't matter what brand the screen or SSD are, the Air is a solid performer.

Buy an Air, enjoy it, and be confident in Apple's ability to produce a quality laptop with components that meet the standards they've set for their systems. And if you have any problems with your Air, rest assured Apple stands behind their products and will fix or replace any defective component or the whole laptop itself if necessary.

Hope this clears it up. This, however, is MY opinion. Others will certainly chime in with theirs. :D

The benchmarks I remember showed the Samsung was 11% faster than the Toshiba - whether that is noticeable or not is subjective I guess.

Why bother? As mentioned above, it really doesn't matter, and because a few people have made such a big deal about something incredibly insignificant, it may just bother you.

but haven't found out how to determine which screen & HD I have on my air. Anyway, just let me know, thanks!

The samsung ssd is supposed to be faster with large sequential blocks of data (i.e, massive files), the toshiba better at non sequential (arguably, opening applications, everyday use). But unless you're moving large blocks of information consistently everyday (How many video encodes are you going to do in a day?) you'd have to be Mr. Data with OCD to notice.

And I was one of the loudest early screamers on the screen "difference":)o). I'll say this again...I think I was careless on my settings with migration assistant, and-in retrospect-my issue started after the transfer; I think my iMac's display profile slash settings got copied over onto my Air. The same thing happened to my Air with the Samsung display. When my Samsung suddenly wouldn't boot, they swapped me for another LG display, Samsung ssd model. And my LG display is perfectly fine.

My settings transfer mishap occurred right before I started reading this threads and I got caught up in the minor tech hypochondria/hysteria and spec whoring that sometimes occurs on the forums. I was reading another thread about another OCD type complaining about a difference in the keyboard backlighting-the two m's on the left command button were dimmer than the rest of the keyboard. I noticed the same with my keyboard, and thankfully this time, decided it was a non issue.

And a bit of background before you decide to judge me as a weak minded, hysterical, OCD afflicted, hissy fit throwing fool: my last apple notebook was a 2008 aluminum macbook, and there were major, discernible and measurable differences between the two or three types of LCD screen included by Apple, one of which was comparatively awful. Part of my overreaction was a kneejerk (Goddamn it, Apple is not going to punk me on a $1500 laptop again!") based upon my initially bad earlier experience.

Again, I say onto you, I don't think there is an objective difference between the LG and Samsung screens. I've had them both now.

And I hope that this is some way atones for my earlier indiscretion.

Now I Remember....

First forums glance in probably a year or so. Thanks for quickly reminding me why I don't frequent MR forums much anymore. Bunch of whiney hipster wanna be's arguing back and forth "my ssd model is better than yours" "Anand said this screen is better than that one". L O L
