Unfortunately the law doesn't trust modern technology. Thats why they still use facsimile and video cassette tapes... But they have to understand that normal people these days don't use that sort of stuff anymore. Asking the OP to fax something in is pretty unreasonable (seriously).

Oh please, it's hardly ridiculous. Many have all-in-one printers that can fax, your office has one, the library, the UPS store, FedEx Office or online faxing to name a few.

And for the record, I never in my life used a fax machine. I have no idea how to fax a damn thing. Why can't everyone email?
Because fax = hard copy. What the sender sees the recipient gets. you cannot make that assessment with email.

Well, it's a bit more interesting than that - but suffice it to say that faxes have the same legal standing these days as paper documents sent through the mail.

Emails have little to no legal standing, depending on the situation.

So I work a night job, and I had jury duty this past Monday.

I called earlier. Luckily I didn't have to go in at all. nothing bad will happen.

Sounds like it was a Stand-By, not a Summons. In Stand-By, you have to call the night before to see if you have to show up.

Luckily, they didn't pull your name as having to show, or you'd be in deep **** now...

So I work a night job, and I had jury duty this past Monday. I worked Sunday night, and I sleep through the morning and into the afternoon. Completely forgetting I had jury duty that day. I took out the paper they sent me, and it said that if I fail to report to jury duty, I will either get fined $500, or get imprisoned for 10 days, or both.

First of all, I'm not a criminal. I wouldn't last 10 minutes in jail, let alone 10 days. And I'm not able to pay 500 bucks out of my pocket. I've got my car insurance to pay for, and my health insurance to pay for. $500 bucks is not in my plan.

What usually happens to most people if they forget to show up?

I've missed it before too because they sent my summons to my old address for some reason.

I called, explained the situation and some lady on the phone chewed me out (not sure what she said I held the phone away until she stopped making noise and hung up).

If you explain the situation and apologize I doubt they will do anything. Apparently according to friends of mine who work at the court house people do it all the time.

I don't work in an office. I work in a bakery.

Same reason the cops don't use DVDs. They use tapes instead.

Not all of them. My local PD's use DVD to record their in-car cameras. My prosecutor's office uses MP3 recordings in court and the court clerks are switching to paperless ticketing.

Quit avoiding the fax machine, they're not as rare as you think. Others have already said you can go to the library, your local office supply store will have them too. I bet you could even go into any regular business and they will have one and might even let you use it if you ask. I have 4 of them in my small office; I'll even let you use it for a nominal fee.

But really, anyone with half a brain would know that some place like Kinkos, UPS or the library would have a fax machine. I think you're intentionally playing stupid on account of your absolute failure to function as a young adult. In the future don't sit around until the last possible second to take care of things and if you do get to that point, man up and fix your mistake.

You got lucky, this time.

His neighbors might have one too...

Let the poor guy alone. Fax machines are a relic of by-gone technology. Almost as bad as Pac-Man.

'lum (can I call you 'lum?) there are online services that will send documents to a fax machine (e.g. eFax) Check some out and see which ones fit your needs and your budget, for future reference.

Funny story... I got a summons a couple of months ago. The court where I was summoned is over sixty miles from where I live, and the road leads through mountains that I don't know my dear old car can handle. Meanwhile, there is a court, in the same county system, right here in my town.

So, I call up the jury clerk, give the name of my town, and simply ask if I can switch my jury service to the court in my town. She says no, I can't do jury service in the town I live. Really ridiculous, as that court services at least four other towns in my county; the odds of being called on a case where I know any of the parties is remote. I explain that I don't want to get out of jury duty per se, but I'm worried about my car making it to the faraway court. She says to put that I don't have reliable transportation on my form and fax it back. I'm off the hook.

Because a fax has legal standing, and, quite often, you may have to actually sign it, which means writing your actual signature, something which cannot be done with email.

Because fax = hard copy. What the sender sees the recipient gets. you cannot make that assessment with email.

Exactly, and true.

I'm pretty much in agreement with your take on the OP's general response (or lack of) so far.
