I think the mini is great, including the screen, it's exceeded all my expectations...and the next one will be even better!

I have the mini and wish it was retina as the I really liked my old iPad 3 amd 4 screen. I thought I would hate the display but I have found that the size und weight of this mini outweighs the screen issue. I look forward to the mini with retina and will definitely upgrade to it. I've had all of the iPads so far and this is the best all around for me. The screen still is however my biggest complaint

i wonder what computers everyone uses who complain about how "pixelated" the mini is, because ill bet the majority use a lower ppi display

agreed. i mean how close are people holding the ipad. I use my computer at 2 feet and my ipad at about the same distance--

For most uses, I hold my iPhone 18-20" away. When i had my iPad 2, I held it slightly farther away. I've used a mini a few times and the screen looks great to me. On the other hand, the standard iPad is too big to be very portable, while a smaller tablet like the iPad mini would be great.

... But i think the lack of retina display on the ipad mini is an absolute non-issue.

You're not an idiot. I have 20/20 vision and I can't notice one bit of difference between retina and non retina displays until I zoom completely in purposely lookin for a difference. It's definitely a non issue for me as well.

Well now isn't this strange (tongue in cheek).. Those of us who have it love ....those that don't have it all have some reason why....

I'll just enjoy the heck out of this one and buy the next one when it comes along....

No point in getting it until it has Retina.

I rather wait for it too come to come out then get a nonretina iPad (again).

Have the iPad 1.

We are so insanely spoiled by Retina...

Look back at the reviews of the iPad2. How many of them made a huge issue out of how hard it was to read text? How many of them talked about how awful the screen was?

Right. None of them (probably, I haven't read EVERY one admittedly).

And the mini has a HIGHER dpi than the iP2. I'm not saying I wouldn't love a Retina screen too, but these people who "can't live with" or "stand" what 2-3 years ago was a phenomenal screen are just being silly.

Could it be better? Sure, and it will be at some point. For now, it's FINE, and it's perfectly reasonable to use for reading. Yes, Retina is BETTER, but that by itself makes so many "I have to have the bestest" users so jaded towards anything less that it's hillarious.

Everyone thinking of getting one (but holding off because of waiting on Retina) should buy one. If you can't live with it after using it for a week (ignoring the anti non-Retina hype), return it.

I'd bet 95+% would keep it if they did.

Used to that kind of resolution, with my 1280x800 MBP.

Which has been an appalling resolution for far, far too many years. I wouldn't recommend a 1280x800 MacBook Pro to my worst enemy (well... ok maybe the absolute worst enemy).

It's all about sensitivity. When I reviewed the original iPad I complained about the low resolution. So some of us have been wanting "retina" displays for quite a few years now. Either one cares or one doesn't. This forum-goer does! :)

Yeah, I am actually good with it. Everyone knows that Apple is moving to retina with everything eventually. The thing is, this is an HD screen. It is clear, light weight, and can run all of the apps that the newest high end iPad can run.

Will the screen look better as retina? Sure. Deal breaker? Nah.

Depends on your definition of HD. Some say it's 720 pixels on the vertical (landscape mode). I say HD is if you can display 720p HDTV in all its pixel glory (after all, that's how/why HDTV came into being). Which... the mini can't. 1024x768 is not enough to display 1280x720 content.

Non-retina a deal-reaker? Ya. For me it is. And for others. Doesn't make you wrong about it not being deal-breaker for you. But remember, sensitivity is key! :)

I have seen it in person (and used it quite a bit, a friend of mine has one) and I can't put up with that screen.
Maybe I've been spoiled by other products with retina display, but I just can't stand it. Reading is such a nightmare...
I know reading this post was. Wait till you get macular degeneration, then none of this will be an issue.

The next one will drop the price on the current one, which will be even better.

It's all marketing clap-trap, but people apparently can't get enough hype these days. They should try living without electricity.

If you're not comparing the screens side by side all the time you're not going to notice the difference unless you're constantly looking for it every time you use the mini.

Some web pages don't flow so the mini scales the page in portrait mode since it renders it at 1024 wide. This isn't the case for all websites but is for many. Try the mobile version of MacRumors to see a page that works fine handling the rotation of the screen so the fonts always look good. As soon as the rendered page is scaled it looks bad compare to the retina screens since they have more pixels to scale onto. View pages in landscape and they look fine on the mini although I wish Apple would let us set the minimum font size since even a full size iPad can be a problem with small fonts, retina or not.

I'm tending to use more mobile apps rather than safari these days since they are easier to drive and read regardless of orientation. Alien Blue for example which is great on the iPhone and iPad mini.

It is great indeed and I want to get one myself but the thing is if you are used to rMBP display like me even 22" fullHD display seems pixelated so I'm gonna wait for next generation with retina display and then get one.

Literally, it is silly that notebooks are still sold with such low resolution displays, at such a high price, and yet they STILL manage to lag in many games, look at the insane resolution on a iPad3/4, now look at the Graphics in its games, the battery life and the thermals, and most of all the form factor!
Wtf is going on here?!

When I went to the apple store to test it out, I didn't even notice.

inb4 recommendations to buy glasses... ;) (EDIT: this is not to imply that you need glasses, just saying that someone will post it sooner or later)

The mini has higher ppi than the iPad 2, yet still far from retina. This is not very visible when watching video, but you can probably see the blur when reading small-sized text.

I used the 4 off and on over the complete Christmas period and although I quite liked the retina screen I still found myself using my 2 in preference. It just felt right compared to the heavier, chunkier 4.

Got as far as taking photos of the 2 to put on ebay but as Jan the 7th approached, last day to get a full refund, I realised the 4 had to go. A lot of money for what seemed like an 'old' style iPad. I didn't like the mini but the form factor is the way the next iPad will go.

The iPad 5 will probably be the one to get my beloved 2 onto ebay!

Funny how people who think a product isn't good enough haven't bought it.
