seanrlegend did you take any pictures?

Thank you

I'll try and post the video tonight. Although I warn you it is perhaps the most boring thing you will ever see. Just me running a glass cutter over the face of my iphone. What is a good place to upload my footage?

Boztiger did you put the video ??? :)

Thanks

digitizer --- separate from glass
OK so here's my situation -

my digitizer is bad - outer protective screen is good - lcd is good.

the one million dollar question - can you remove the outer screen from the digitizer with out damaging the outer glass? -

then i have to remove the digitizer from the lcd?

ugh.. i found the digitizer piece on ebay for 10 bucks - called a repair tech i know and he said it is impossible and a scam -

what do you all think ? has anybody seen a thread that voices that it is actually possible? thanks!! this thread has been really helpful.

Argh... reading this thread is depressing. I am one of those poor schooks who is already locked into an AT&T contract and can't get an iPhone 3GS for less than $499. So I am trying to find an alternate way of joining the party.

One of my friends was nice enough to give me his old busted iPhone, and I thought I would be able to swap out the glass fairly easily, but it sounds like to do the job right I would have to buy a new digitizer, as well as a new back for the phone since it is busted up too...

Now I am honestly thinking about just covering the glass with plastic or saran wrap or something, and just using it carefully until I qualify for a phone upgrade. :(

ok yall are trying the wrong thing . with the goo gone . you need a hair dryer to remove the glass from the digitizer. try that it is a lot easier than all that messy glue remover . good luck it should be easier

This is a great thread. I didn't read the entirety of every single post, but the most important part of this process (besides being extremely patient and careful) is making sure the gaps that are left around the touch screen are COMPLETELY SEALED. Personally, I use KWIK SEAL PLUS Kitchen and Bath Adhesive Caulk.

After your new touch screen has been glued back to the black framing around the LCD, your going to need to apply caulk around the small hairline cracks around the phones edge. It can be tricky completing this process without having glue you can feel around where the metal bezel touches the touchscreen. I would definitely advise leaving more on than trying to make it look perfect. If the cracks aren't filled with some sort of sealant, dust WILL accumulate under the touchscreen over time, making your iphone just look like hell when its not lit up.

This has been my experience. If anyone has perfected this method I'd greatly appreciate your method.

From personal experience, with trying to remove the LCD and not breaking the digitizer in the process, it is easier to buy the LCD and the digitizer together take apart the phone, remove the LCD and digitizer and replace both of them. It took me an hour to replace the LCD and digitizer while it took me over an hour to remove the LCD and then cracking the digitizer.

It is much easier than messing with the LCD and trying to remove that. I hope this helps out someone. You can get the LCD with the Digitizer on ebay for less than $20 and most of the time it comes with the screw driver and the sticky parts to put the phone back together. Here is a site that shows you how to take apart the phone and put it back together: www.directfix.com.

Glass only vs. Glass & Digitizer

The Glass and Digitizer for an iPhone or iPod Touch are one piece as purchased as a replacement part. ( They are not the same parts as the iPhones and iPods Touch uses different glass & digitizer parts ) They are combined in a controlled clean room setting where they are mated together to complete the assembly. There is no economical or time efficient method that allows the DIY person or even a good repair shop to replace just the glass that would allow there to be any reliable usage from the touch panel if it indeed did work following such a repair.

There are people online selling what they call "the glass" or the "glass screen" and do not mention the digitizer. In most cases they mean the "glass and digitizer" if you can get them on the phone and they speak your language you can find out for sure. In a few rare occasions some one is selling just the glass. Typically its new as they have damaged the digitizer when removing the protective film from the back of the assembly.

There are also many glass & digitizer assemblies online for sale. Be careful to find and retailer that supplies OEM parts. There are many knock offs that have lower tensile strength than the OEM replacement parts and typically for the 3GS do not have the Oleophobic coating that prevents the finger prints or the coating wears off too quickly. Think of your phone as the life line to emergency services and you want it to work when you need it. Spend the money and get the right part.

In my experience, the touch panel ( glass and digitizer ) need to perform a dual functioning role. It must allow interaction and provide a smooth surface to navigate but it must also be properly seated into the mid-frame to prevent particulates from entering between the glass and the LCD. This secondary role is vital to long term use of your iPhone or iPod. Many iPhones and iPods end up with water damage, particulate damage that could have been avoided by replacing the mid-frame when they repaired the glass & digitizer.

There are many good repair places online. Find one you can call and talk with. They should help you through a DIY repair too if they sell parts and give you good advise to making sure your iPhone or iPod is working its best.

Ebay like 10$
BESIDES THAT... i got a referb for $300.. so i feel like i'm just buying a whole new phone..

$250 is a bit steep for an easy fix (replacement)..

I am pretty handy, and i think i can manage taking apart this phone..

again, anyone know where I can get the GLASS ONLY

----------

Ebay 10$ all day
QUOTE=davidjearly;4866058]I can't find anywhere where you can buy the glass display cover on its own.
This is likely because most people can't be bothered breaking it down that far.

Maybe you can broker a deal with this guy?
