Considering that's a low end iPad I wouldn't expect it to support all the Pro features, yes I wouldn't be surprised if iOS 11 leveraged some of that 4Gb ram and the ones with 2Gb wouldn't be able to do some fancy new things

Ok, well if that's your train of thought then I'd recommend a Surface Pro book with a core I7 loaded to the gills in specs. The iPad pro 12 incher is the only 4gb device. It's iOS, so it's not even a real fully fledged Operating System. No developer is going to write an app that only works on one, or two iOS devices that has more than 2 gigs of ram when the majority still run on 1. We're getting into spec fantasy land here. So I say if you're a hardware spec guy, go with a real CPU and OS in a surface book, or get an iPad pro and don't worry about memory, or CPU power. Either way both will last a super long time.

I'm not a spec guy, I'm a what simply works best and will last the longest time for the money. With a $1000 budget iPad is that magical device. Also I believe it would make since, hypothetically Apple announces new iPad Pro bewtween now and across the board they all have 4Gb of ram. They move the current 9.7inch Pro into this middle device, it would be the only Pro with 2Gb of ram other than the entry level iPad, Apple could very likely then introduce a new feature that needs the 4Gb of ram, sorta like how with iOS 9 only the Air 2 worked wth SplitView. It wouldn't surprise me if they gave the current 9.7inch Pro got the same cold shoulder as the iPad Air did with iOS 9 Split-View. They've done that before what's to make me believe they wouldn't do it again. Also my train of thought doesn't have a unlimited budget. I cannot dream of going out and spending $2000+ on a computer, that would also be a waste regardless of power since my work doesn't need that power.

Buy it!

Then everyone here will laugh at you when Apple launches the next iPad Pro with 8GB of RAM and makes iOS 11 have features that work only on iPads with at least 4GB of RAM, like being able to drag/drop/annotate directly/file system access.

Then you'll stare at your older iPad Pro sadly while everyone around you has the latest iPad Pro and doing all kinds of cool stuff.

Typed on a 12.9" iPad Pro that will get the latest iOS 11 features unlike you.

That was Golden! A spec guy like me would totally freak out at this post! But, yea... Apple doesn't even mention ram when announcing new products, as it's more or less irreverent when it comes to their mobile products strategy.

/me thinks your Air 2 is perfectly fine for what you need it to do, and you're looking/fishing to upgrade to a magical device to fill an un-explainable void that really won't give you any real benefits over what you currently have. Just keep what you've got, since it works so well and upgrade when you really need to. Save your money and enjoy life. Have a good night man!

I dunno lol, I keep seeing this date in this thread

AH MAN! ONLY 1 GB of RAM? You are totally screwed dude!

Yeah man, am already struggling with some of the games I play :(

It's so bad that I am strongly considering getting an Air 2 to tide over but then again, this reminds me of that marshmallow experiment

DO NOT GET A AIR 2 it also struggles in games just wait it out man were in this together

Wait. That's what I'm going to do. I'm dying for an Apple Pencil, but I already have an air 2 with a nice stylus that works for now so that's all I would really be benefiting from upgrading. The speakers and true tone display are features that I could care less about. The 2GB of ram never sat well with me. If it would have had 4GB I wouldn't have blinked an eye buying it. The new one will be worth the wait.

That is a flat out lie. If you conisder a few seconds of loading struggling then sure. It runs smooth but I wouldn't recommend buying it nor the Pro.

On a serious note, are you joking, or really serious?

Really serious, we are talking about random lags in games that can cause you losses despite hitting at the right timing

DO NOT GET A AIR 2 it also struggles in games just wait it out man were in this together

Thanks! Phew, dodged a bullet there! Only the iPad 2017 or iPad Pro 9.7 inch are safe options right?

 That totally sucks man!:( I guess it makes sense from a practical standpoint. The newer iPhones and iPads in 2017 are all 2gb of ram, or more these days, which means the newest iOS updates will require 2gb of ram for full functionality. Maybe You should get the new 2017 iPad, or a refurb Air 2?

So nothing has been announced on the new ones and well I am losing it over here, I just want to the Pencil for my class notes, I guess if I don't really use my iPad for anything intense, should I even worry about the A9X being a year old chip. My biggest concern buying the Pro is iOS 11 gets unveiled and the Pro wont support all its new features, mainly due to 2 Gbs of ram, is that enough, they have had 2Gb of ram now for awhile and I feel like it will become a performance issue within the next year. Or Im just way to paranoid. If I don't use my iPad for more than web browsing, Netflix, RSS reader, and PDF's/notability would the current Pro fulfil the needs for awhile, like at least 4 years.

Why should anyone talk you out of it. Even IF Apple releases an update the current Pros are beyond powerful and will run a good 5-7 more years. I highly highly doubt there will be any iPad update until either June or Fall.
But either way buying one now is still a great purchase and investment.

Kallum.

I believe a mid Fall release is more likely. If April fails to have any news/invites otherwise, then Fall it is.

Sorry, just saw. I don't think the RAM is the issue; given that these games are graphics intensive, I am suspecting the lack of GPU cores in the iPad Air playing a big part in causing the lag.

I am leaning closer to the iPad 2017 since it is just 32 more SGD than a refurb iPad Air 2 for twice the amount of storage space, being much newer (which is good for iOS upgrades and trade-in prices) and slightly better CPU. The Air 2 has more cores though.

I meant for gaming, at least the one game I play runs stutters and if I zoom out the map its like 5fps panning around.

Did you buy it yet?
No not yet........

The Air 2 has more cores but trust me the A9 outperforms it and gets you better battery life.
