This is the post that made my finally register for these forums. How is this possible?? I would jump on it in a heartbeat.

Verizon allows you to retain someone else's plan including their data plan via an assumption of liability transfer. That's exactly how I got the plans in the first place but don't need them anymore.

I also live in Southern California (Encino/Sherman Oaks area to be exact) and I get pretty decent LTE reception everywhere I go in So Cal unless I'm up in the mountains like Big Bear (still get signal bars there though).

I can't speak for Verizon in other areas obviously but it's pretty good out here in So Cal. All I know is that despite the unlimited data, Sprint is horrible here based on my friend's experiences so far. He has Galaxy S3 on Sprint. Rarely gets 4G signal. He lives in South Bay area.

FYI, I pay about $152, shared plan (unlimited minutes/texts, 4 GB data).

Can you explain how this would work?

A person would call up Verizon customer care to authorize the transfer to you. Then you would call up Verizon's assumption of liability dept (AOL) and they will do a credit check and with no deposit or with a deposit you will assume their line(s)

Would I be able to port my number? Or do I have to use the number the line comes with?

you would have to use the number the line comes with but I've heard where folks have ported their number over after the transfer was complete. But it definitely can't be done during the transfer.
