There is the problem with the "point" of this thread - you assume that WE all find Apple annoying but still buy/lust after their stuff. I don't find Apple annoying. I have not had any problems with their build quality. Out of all the Macs I have bought, I had a problem with 1, and Apple fixed it for free. I have had a problem with 1 of the many iPods I have bought, and Apple replaced it for free. I use iTunes and the iPod because I choose to (in spite of all the competition), not because I am forced to. So I have a good reason for wanting/buying their stuff.

(Long list of Apple's problems/failures)...Yet still I want what they've got.

So is the real point of this thread that you are the ultimate fanboi? ;)

There is a difference between a road map from a chip maker and a company like Apple. Road maps from Intel, et al, keep consumers loyal to the brand because they provide some guarantee of cutting edge upgrades. A company like Apple invents a lot of products that people have never seen before (at least that's what they hope to do), and to provide a road map for their competitors would be foolish.

But anywho, I agree with most of what you said. Carry on...

I've always wondered why people expect more out of Apple. I get your points, but it reminds me of those who actually do expect Macs and iPods/iPhones to be 100%. They aren't and they never will be. We get a ton of HP and Lenovas dying on us for no reason at work, won't even use Dells anymore, and no one bats and eye. A hard drive or MB goes out on a Mac and it's the end of the world. I want to buy their products because they're good, even if they might not be perfect.

There are things that Apple does that drive me to the point of dispair. Design decision, software decision, sales decisions, hardware decisions - things that, to my eyes, are either intentionally idiotic or just symptoms of downright incompetence.

But it's rendered survivable simply because I can give a lecture with Keynote.

Hand on heart - if Keynote didn't exist, I wouldn't have a Mac.

I really do hate Apple sometimes, they're just so annoying.

They have a complete monopoly on the digital media player and digital distribution market

No, they do not have anywhere near "complete monopoly". If they had over 90% market-share, then we MIGHT have this discussion, but even then it would be debatable that would they have a "complete" monopoly.

yet no one seems to care

People do not care about Apple's monopoly, because Apple is not a monopoly.

Then there's the damn iPhone. In the UK the law of the mobile phone world is that you get a half decent contract, then pay next to nothing (or nothing at all) for a top of the line handset.

Even if the handset didn't have any upfront cost, it wouldn't be free by any stretch of the imagination.

Then Apple come along expecting £270 up front plus a lengthy contract.

then don't buy it. problem solved.

The first version of hardware is fatally (in my view) missing 3G

Then don't buy it

and to a lesser extent GPS.

Then don't buy it.

Now I find myself almost feeling grateful that they're about to deliver the device they should have in the first place, and am far less outraged at them wanting me to fork out a lot of money up front for it. How the f*** did that happen??

If you don't want to pay money for the phone, then don't. No-one is forcing you to get the iPhone. But there are apparently loads of people out there that the device if worth the money

They make it an outright nightmare to buy stuff as you never know what they have around the corner because unlike anyone else there are simply no road maps. Argh!

Nokia, Dell etc. don't have roadmaps either. There are no plans that say "in 1 years we will release this and this product". Yes, they sometimes pre-announce products, but so does Apple.

Intel, AMD, et al.

So those companies have published their roadmaps... Well, last time I checked, those are CPU-manufacturers. If you want a true Apple to apples-comparison, has Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, Dell, HP, Motorola etc. published roadmaps as to what devices they will be releasing in the future? No? That's what I thought.

Apple's product roadmap

Apple has a well known product roadmap:

Laptops:
-As soon as the QC problems start to get cleared up, introduce a new model.
-Introduce a new product line that gets rid of features that everyone assumes they desperately need. Do it again a few years later.

Headless computers:
-Updates? Who needs updates ;)

All products/product lines:
1)Look up "Unlucky Bas#$rd" in the phone book.
2)Wait until he buys the product
3)Upgrade it right after it is too late for him to return the old model.

:eek::eek::eek:

iBook logic boards.
Powerbook dodgy screens.
MacBook Pro excessive thermal paste/dodgy screens.
iMac dodgy fans/screens.
iPod classics that freeze.
iPod nano's with wonky screens.

etc, etc.
Ours (UK, probably entire EU) are built in Ireland.

Don't forget the PowerMac G5's which would blow a capacitor on the CPU rendering them useless (although this could be fixed with a pair of steady hands, much to my friends delight when he got a 2000 euro machine for only 200)

Unfortunately though Mac's are only assembled in Ireland. All the parts come from China and they just stick them together here. It's a way of getting tax breaks by saying it's made here when it actually isn't. I think the logic boards are actually preinstalled in the Mac Pro (powermac at the time) casing. I'll have to ask my friend about this.

Very good first post though. I feel your pain :) Although i love my hacked iPhone.

They have a complete monopoly on the digital media player and digital distribution market, yet no one seems to care, probably because they're easily the best in both areas. Cue Apple smugness.

Their quality control has gone down the pan over recent years, Leopard is definitely more flaky than anything before it. Still good, but arguably not good enough. Then there's the stupid hardware problems that seem to plague anything and everything they release. Even given all of this I still want their latest everything, damn it. How irritating! Cue more Apple smugness.

Then there's the damn iPhone. In the UK the law of the mobile phone world is that you get a half decent contract, then pay next to nothing (or nothing at all) for a top of the line handset. Then Apple come along expecting £270 up front plus a lengthy contract. Cheeky bastids. The first version of hardware is fatally (in my view) missing 3G, and to a lesser extent GPS. There are ridiculous software oversights (no copy/paste, no browsable file system, can't save pics, easily set ring tones etc etc). Never the less, it is still a highly desirable device. The buggers. A year on and they're about to release the 3G version, with software 2.0, hopefully alleviating the flaws that shouldn't have been there in the first place. Now I find myself almost feeling grateful that they're about to deliver the device they should have in the first place, and am far less outraged at them wanting me to fork out a lot of money up front for it. How the f*** did that happen?? Creeps. Cue yet more Apple smugness.

It's enough to drive you batty! Yet still I want what they've got. http://up.*************/files/1/Images/Smilies/Insane.gif http://up.*************/files/1/Images/Smilies/BangHeadAgainstWall.gif

If you look at the "evolution of design" videos/ pictures for apple (googling evolution apple usually does the trick on the image tab) - 1G iPods? For the love of alcoholic beverages HOWWW? I think Apple for the most part is just moving fast enough to have a bow wave of design/product at the leading edge, the actual Apple mothership behind that, and the wake of discontinued products fairly quickly behind it. Apple have been able to prune a bit more than Microsoft in terms of backwards compatability. Whilst painful, it's been useful. Bringing out a compelling product that trumps the old one (which was just missing x,y,z to be perfect) is a great way to do this.
For me, it's like eating a smidge of wasabi.

similar can be said about Google. Following in the footsteps of Microsoft, but no one seems to care.

Seems "anything but Microsoft" is a common theme today.

I find it a little alarming at how willing they are to exchange their products when they go wrong, its almost as if they know their products arent perfect and that a few faulty products dont really matter.

"Company in excessively good customer service shocker". Whatever next?

p.s. reality check: nothing is perfect. And from Apple's point of view, a few faulty products don't matter as long as they replace them and send the customer away happy (often to tell their friends how great the Apple Store was about exchanging their item).

This thread isn't so much to bitch about Apple's flaws, more to marvel/be irritated by how that despite the many ways in which they are incredibly annoying, we all still want and do buy/lust after their shizzles.

Up until about eight months ago (around the time the latest batch of iPods was revealed) I didn't really follow Apple all that much; I had an iPod (in fact, I'd already had two by that point) and I had used a Mac before (Mac OS 9 back in around 1999/2000 at school). I was very pleased with my iPod's performance (originally a 1st gen nano, then a 30GB 5.5 gen classic), even though I had to end up getting the 30GB replaced sometime around late September last year...now, this could have deterred me from Apple's products altogether, but it didn't. I knew of the negative black and other early issues plaguing the iPod touch, but I still ended up replacing the 30GB with one of those, risking what would have been quite a shoddy unit just for the sake of being up-to-date with Apple's latest device. In late March of this year, the iPod touch began to experience problems similar to my original iPod classic; freezes, random resettings...other things like the accelerometer deciding not to work and parts of the screen randomly becoming unresponsive. Got a replacement unit, and once again it didn't really affect my view on Apple and their quality control. I damn well know it should have, and if it were any other company I probably would have given up long ago. But somehow the many great things I'd heard about Apple stopped me from ditching iPods and their other products which resulted in my purchasing of a 20" iMac (my first Mac). I get the feeling now that even if this computer screws up, for some reason I'll still retain my faith in the company. It's odd...
