I spoke to Apple yesterday afternoon, told them my story, told them I needed a repair estimate, and they overnighted a prepaid box for me to send the MBP back in. The box came today, and the MBP is on the way back to Apple for triage and hopefully repair. I opened it up last night to check the logic board, and there was no apparent damage to that. The only thing that looks damaged on that end is the Superdrive. So, anyway, here are the pics. Pretty self-explanatory.

Sorry; don't know what happened. I was using an app that someone gave me; evidently Imagevenue isn't the best place for hosting images. Again, sorry. I'll post them again later.

NSFW Yikes... naked chicks on the ad banner above the images you posted. Won't be clicking *that* again at work.

Hope you get your MBP fixed.

Yeah, I'm amazed it's still actually booting. Best of luck to you and let us know how much the repair quote is for -- or if you decided to spring for a replacement.

Good luck bro. I got my SuperDrive replaced under warranty earlier this year and even though it was free, the genius told me it's normally a $450 repair. If I were you, I wouldn't another Mac because I'm sure you will be charged a arm and a leg...

So I got the estimate back from Apple for the repair, and it's not nearly as bad as I expected it to be.

It's listed as "Tier 2 Damage: $330; Labor: $100; Shipping: $19.95" for a grand total of $449.95.

Frankly, I'm a bit worried that this doesn't include the superdrive at all b/c the screen I priced was about $300. Maybe, though, Apple bills at cost for repair parts and then makes up for it on labor. If this is the total cost for the total repair, though, I'm happy.

I should add that this est came in on Friday and Apple didn't get back to me when I called to check on the specific costs. Either way, hopefully the CC ins will approve the claim by midweek and I can have it back by Friday.

Insurance companies canceling a policy because you file a claim should be grounds for a huge fine or class action lawsuit.

The whole point of insurance is to cover your losses in the event of an accident/disaster. If they are going to cancel after one claim, why not just skip the insurance and pay out of pocket? Would probably be cheaper, especially considering people go 10-20 years without a single claim, paying as much in premiums as their policy even covers.

I hope you can get the computer back in working order! :D

Would I be correct to assume you have USAA?

And whomever had their policy cancelled after ONE claim can you please inform us of the company, in case I have them as well?

good post! Sorry for your loss/luck!

actually, an LED screen is just an LCD that is backlit with LEDs. there is a protective glass overlay, over the screen, which evidently cracked, but the display did not.

oh, thanks for the facts.

damn... then these screens are thin as HELL:p

If you are asking me, no I have State Farm, and I really dislike them. I've never filed a claim in 10+ years, but I feel like if I did, they would drop me or jack my rates through the roof.

The only reason I stay with them, is that they are the lowest price.

Wow! I expected it to be totaled! You ran OVER it?!

Wow, not much damage at all when you think about what happened to it. I hope you get it back n everything ^^

+1! looks like the unibody enclosure is pretty rigid.

Sorry, folks, I'll get pics up later. I've been trying to back up the HDD AND Time Machine it for redundancy's sake. Turns out our deductible is higher than the value of the computer (low premiums, though...huzzah!), so now I need to find out if the card company will ONLY pay if insurance also kicks in. If not, it may be fully out of pocket.

I'm thinking if repairs cost close to 70% of total cost of a new one then it's time to call it a total loss. Anyone think that's too high? This damn thing just crossed the 60 day mark, too...

And please let it be known I'm not complaining. This is totally my doing; part of posting here is both cathartic and taking my lumps for being a neglectful owner.

Is it the screen, the glass, or both? 13.3" or 15.4"?

It's not as expensive as you might think. You will hate yourself through the process of picking out the shattered glass, but it's a small price to pay to redeem yourself to your wife. :)

thats quite impressive actually. I'm guessing led screens don't leak when the screen is cracked like lcd's?

They do but it is difficult to see when taking a picture with a camera through another piece of glass that has the typical dust/dirt/fingerprints on it. Throw in the light and you'll never be able to see it.

Is this for cracked LCD and cracked glass, or just for cracked glass?

If it's for the former, Apple's taken a big step forward towards not raping the consumer on repair costs anymore. Good for them!

That's what I don't know. The top casing was damaged, as well, along with the superdrive and bottom casing. If it's just under $500 for ALL of that damage then I'll be very happy. If it's just that for JUST repairing the cracked glass, then I'll be pretty pissed. I don't know how the superdrive was damaged; it was on the opposite of impact and the glass on that side was fine.

Hopefully I'll get some answers soon. I don't want to get a "repaired" computer back that still has lots of damage from the same incident.

There are times where I've had to feel like a dick explaining to someone that doing glass only was impossible due to the aluminum being way too bent out of shape for new glass to sit in there without cracking.

To my knowledge apple is selling the entire top piece to authorized repair centers for low $400s so I sincerely doubt under $400 is getting you a whole new top piece.

If you have a good eye you'll be able to tell if they did the glass, glass + LCD, or whole assembly. Things to look for if they only did the glass is dust behind the LCD because I have yet to see a place doing this in a clean, or even semi-professional clean room environment. I also notice a decent amount of places that don't wipe the fingerprints off the old LCD while putting the new glass on. Some even let the old cracked glass scratch the LCD that's being kept in there.

I can't wait until Apple is over their glass fetish.

Got the MBP back yesterday. I authorized the repair for Tier 2 accidental damage (total cost of about $480), and the items listed on the sheet as replaced were the main logic board, the display panel/assembly, and the bottom case.

There's no indication on here that the superdrive was replaced, but the superdrive is back in working order whereas it wasn't last week when I sent it in.

I'm still waiting back for word from the CC company in terms of coverage, but even still, I'm pretty impressed with the cost of repairs for this thing.
